The more you kick against the pricks, the more you suffer.
The opening premise of Mosquito Coast is so aggressively dumb.

Hello, I am extremely wanted by the U.S. government for reasons that will not be disclosed until the season finale, to the point that my children cannot use electronic devices or contact their grandparents. A single slip up means that literally all law enforcement within a fifty mile radius will be instantly retasked to hunting my family.

Though I and my family are constantly aware of this high level of danger, we are going to chill in California rather than Belize. I have no backup plan whatsoever for when we are inevitably discovered and have not bothered to learn any language other than English.

I am the very smart protagonist.

Yes if remember correctly. He puts his family in danger to accomplish this insane goal. I remember really liking the movie, but I think I was like 13 when my family rented it on VHS. Is there something about a dam in this movie too?

Edit: I just seen it was directed by Peter Weir. I might have to give it a rewatch.

Anyone got any currently running show recommendations? I'm down to only watching Cruel Summer and I feel like surely there must be more than this.

I'm desperate. I'll also take recent streaming releases. I'm half a day away from watching Who Killed Sara season 2, the most pec-dominant melodramatic show on television.

The people behind Dark have another Netflix show coming, 1899. It takes place on a ship traveling from London to New York where partway through the voyage a person is discovered adrift in the ocean. The characters will be from all over Europe and the show will be multilingual with characters talking in their native language. Andreas Pietschmann (adult Jonas) is going to be in it and they're going to be using the same kind of virtual set tech that The Mandalorian uses.

Probably not coming out until next year since it is currently filming now.

Girls5Eva if you liked 30 Rock or Kimmy Schmidt. The writing is tight, and the soundtrack is on point.

Not a huge surprise but it came out that Disney isn't moving forward with Rangers of the New Republic. This was the one where they didn't give a description but from the title people assumed it would be a showcase for Gina Carano's character and then she got fired.

That doesn't make sense. Who the hell cared about her character on Mandalorian? I didn't even know she was already known before that show, though I had a thought that she was a former athlete since they are terrible actors.

Mandalorian is the most well-received star wars related bit of media to happen since the knights of the old republic video game. Disney will make every financially-responsible attempt to expand the very narrowly-defined IP of star wars that they can think of, up to and including showcasing the backstories of every secondary character in every star wars story in an infinite fractal like pattern until the end of time or capitalism

That makes financial sense but give a show to Werner Herzog not generic stone-faced soldier character #15. It's just hard for me to believe that whole spinoff was a Gina Carano vehicle.

It's been remade on Apple+ starring Justin Theroux as an Ozark/Breaking Bad clone but they're taking for loving ever to get to the icecube factory. Everyone but the wife is incredibly unlikable.

I can see some people being disappointed by Master of None s3. Some will be disappointed that it’s barely a comedy but is instead Ansari and Waithe doing a Bergman homage, and others will be disappointed because, well, Ansari ain’t fuckin Bergman.

Just had a convo with a friend about this and he pointed out that it’s always been kind of a pretentious show which is true but it was self-aware about it before with stuff like the Criterions on the bedside table in the s2 premiere and generally the more comedic tone. This doesn’t have that feel at all and also there are at least two scenes in the premiere that are basically lifted from the first episode of Scenes from a Marriage!*

I’m enjoying it well enough and Naomi Ackie especially is incredible but there are definitely pretty big issues and I think a lot of people who liked the first couple seasons are gonna be turned off by it.

*never seen the film cut, 5 hour miniseries cut fo life

She was good in that one movie (haywire I think?) but I think a lot of that came from the fact 90 percent of her acting in that was hitting people.

Finished Master of None s3. The fourth episode is fantastic. The rest is not. You can watch the fourth episode by itself without any knowledge of the rest, and imo you should do that. It’s excellent and the only one that actually feels like it has something to say. The rest is an average Scenes from a Marriage homage except when it goes further than that and actually rips off entire scenes and ideas, and the filmmaking very rarely elevates the material - way more often than not, it feels like it’s only that way because that’s how Bergman did it!!!!! with, as I mentioned in my previous post, none of the show’s previous self-awareness. However, when the visual style does work, it REALLY works. But again that’s mostly in episode 4 just watch that one.

Naomi Ackie is so fuckin talented, but even she can’t stop this season from being a disappointment, and this is coming from someone who was absolutely down with everything I saw or heard about it beforehand.

I didn't see a recommendation thread so hopefully this is the right place to ask.

This is an odd request, but does anyone know of any shows in the same vein as The Crown that wouldn't be too scandalous for an old, fairly devout Protestant lady? My aunt asked me for some show recommendations because I've pointed her at a few period dramas before, and she liked The Crown a lot, but she's pretty old-fashioned and doesn't like anything with a lot of swearing and especially nudity.

Like I said, weird request, but it's not a genre that I watch much of so I'm not sure what else what fit the bill.
