We've Got To Go Back

I would love a source for this, because I only ever heard of Fuller leaving over not being given a larger budget for season 2 despite the show's ratings underperforming.

I also heard the same thing, plus Fuller has been show jumping like crazy since, but there has been rumors and behind the scenes reports that have come out.

quote:

That attitude seems at odds with behind-the-scenes reports indicating Fuller and Green were likely replaced because Gaiman was displeased with some of the departures from his book. According to The Hollywood Reporter, production company Fremantle was eager to keep Gaiman happy: “Efforts were made to bring Gods more in line with what Gaiman wanted.” This involved Gaiman being billed as “co-showrunner” for season two—which was the show’s least successful season. Behind-the-scenes strife bubbled over into messy story lines and even messier changes in the cast.

Me @andmichaelgreen never abandoned @AmericanGodsSTZ @GodsOnAmazon. We were dedicated to cast, crafted the season, wrote 5 episodes, even had Media as Mr. Rogers & Princess Leia. We were in the process of reducing scope due to a dramatic budget reduction when we were fired.

It breaks my heart we never got to see Gillian Anderson as Princess Leia.

You misunderstand, they were going to pull a Disney and puppet the dead via CGI. We are blessed to have been spared Carrie Fisher's post-humous performance and doing the same to Fred Rodgers was outright sacrilege.

Not sure how him admitting he was fired is mutually exclusive with him going overbudget for s1 and wanting that same budget to carry over to s2.

e: vvv that is also true. Look at Fuller's track record lol.

Both things--Fuller being Fuller and Gaiman being a prima donna--can be true, they aren't mutually exclusive. And Fuller has been a notorious pain in the rear end to deal with for essentially his entire career.

He literally said he was reducing budget in season 2 when he was fired.

Because he wanted to have gay characters in his shows and the network said no! Jesus, yeah, let's side with the money men on this one. They seem cool.

What?

Reducing the budget is very vague. Could be that he didn't cut enough and was bitching about it. May be he was behind schedule again. This is Fuller after all.

Also you realize both of them can be the rear end in a top hat, right? Once again, look at Fuller's track record.

Dead Like Me: he wanted the dad to be gay, but Showtime was against it. He pushed back, got called a bunch of slurs and, understandably, left.

Wonderfalls: he wrote the sister to be gay, wasn't allowed to show her kiss her girlfriend on screen (they literally kiss just off screen as they fall into bed) and was then asked to end the relationship as a result.

Oh, and CBS was not happy when he announced queer cast members for Star Trek -- he wasn't meant to announce his cast at comicon before the roles had been "approved" by people higher up the chain. What do you think that means?

You can see how someone would have a reputation for being "difficult", but like, gently caress that. Difficult is the loving buzz word that people have always used as a cudgel against "uppity" minorities. What's the saying? The bent nail gets hit.

Reportedly, he's also a great guy to work with, and cultivates strong positive relationships with his writers, actors, staff, etc. And he's certainly capable of working within a budget: Hannibal was a very cheap show (and by the third season you can see it).

Seriously. ABC couldn't stand to deal with him anymore and Pushing Daisies got axed. Fox took one look at his insane ideas for a second season of Wonderfalls and told him to very kindly peace out. Amazon was ready and willing to fund and produce a fourth season of Hannibal, but Fuller insisted that he be given time to write all 13 scripts before a single scene was shot, and Amazon, not having just fallen off the turnip truck, realized that could mean it could be four or five years before the thing was actually made, and told him to gently caress off. He got fired from Star Trek Discovery because he had been able to come up with all of two scripts, plus a vague season-long outline, in the span of three years, and CBS was tired of delaying the show (Discovery was supposed to be the premier show for the launch of CBS All Access, but Fuller farting around resulted in CBS having to rush The Good Fight to be the All Access hook), and at the same time that he was loving around with Discovery and still shopping another season of Hannibal around, he was working on American Gods (and developing Amazing Stories for Apple, who finally told him to gently caress off because he wasn't truly committed to it). And with American Gods, he and Michael Green were demanding on a budget increase for the second season.

Fuller's track record speaks for itself. He is a phenomenal ideas guy but he in no way should be directly running a production.

So do you think that's why Starz fired him? Because of the gay Djinn sex scene in season 1?

He was fired from Star Trek for being extremely behind schedule and months late with the scripts. I heard he was attached to 2 more projects after American Gods, one of them being an Anne Rice vampire tv show, and was fired / left both of them too. Do you think he left the Anne Rice project because he was making it gay?

It means you don't announce casting before it's done. Discovery has a ton of representation, including a non-binary character added in the last season. I don't think CBS had some anti-gay agenda for Star Trek. That was Berman.

The season finale of The Nevers gave me like three migraines.

In a vacuum, I suppose it was good enough, if a bit overdone with the "lookit how quirky I can write future slang!" smugness. But it does a funny thing where, the more you're actually familiar with Whedon's work, the more hackneyed and derivative this becomes.

This is a huge problem with the show that just gets magnified by the finale: everything in here has been lifted from Whedon's previous stories. You can make a 1:1 ratio comparison with just about every single thing about every single character to something from his older stuff. Anything he's ever done before is here, encapsulated in six episodes of one series like an unholy Frankenstein creation of unfiltered Whedon content.

And I'm that rear end in a top hat who'll still go to bat for those older shows: they hold up as some of the best storytelling I've seen. But if you're just gonna copy yourself so completely and bluntly...like...isn't it embarrassing? Aren't you embarrassed, Joss? 'Cuz I'm embarrassed for you. This is embarrassing!

Even the big twist of the season, of Amalia actually being another person's memories and personality imprinted into the original Amalia, is lifted straight from Dollhouse. This, on top of her having spontaneous unclear visions already being lifted from Cordelia having spontaneous unclear visions that serve the exact same purpose plot-wise. She's technically the most interesting part of the show and even then her attributes are actually cobbled together from previous characters!
