Finished Mayans season three. I already thought the show was doing a lot better than SOA, and in its first season without Sutter at the helm it's gotten even better, just as I expected it would. You can tell Sutter's not around anymore because they toned down the violence (nowhere near as much happens and a good chunk of it is offscreen even) and there's a refreshing lack of shock value bullshit. They also took the time to flesh out the other club members, which was really nice because after two seasons I couldn't tell you much about anybody in the club but EZ, Angel and Coco, because there really wasn't much to talk about. Now they all feel a good bit more rounded. Basically, Sutter not being involved is the best thing that could have happened. I enjoyed the first two seasons, but they had a tendency to have episodes that wouldn't have felt out of place in the final seasons of SOA, so basically GTA missions with really long cutscenes between shootouts. There wasn't any of that in this last season. It felt like a solid drama series throughout and no episodes were a waste. Only bit I didn't like was Coco's subplot, but even that had its moments. Overall I'd still recommend it. If you want to avoid the "SOA lite" period, you might even be able to start with this season. You'll miss some vital developments but I imagine you can pick up on what happened pretty easily. I don't know that I'd recommend that though, because even during the first two seasons I still feel like its highs were better than any of SOA's.

The Lost Symbol was too poo poo for me, particularly once it became clear that it wasn't gonna Indianna Jones at least once an episode (closer to once a season). Sorry Ashley Zuckerman, I'll just have to wait for you to come back to Succession. My new hatewatch target: La Brea. So far we've got death vultures, poorly concealed Australian accents, aggressive ripping off of Lost (down to the shot choices), attempts to pass off the Lost rip-off stuff as irony, and Natalie Zea being way too good for this poo poo. Hopefully it'll hit the sweet spot between being poo poo and being entertaining; this terrible CGI wolf fight is promising though.

It’s interesting that after all these years Lost still has a gigantic impact on tv. There are the basics of how serialized tv works, you have the bad rip offs like La Brea, and then there are shows like Y The Last Man and Foundation who only paid half attention to what made Lost so great.

Quarry captures the pulpiness of the books it is based on, but it also feels higher quality than those books. Also if you are a fan of For All Mankind I let you notice an actress who is in both. I am still pissed they cancel it. Yes to all of these, including Strike Back (boo to the haters who don't like the third cast rotation. Boo I say). Also Da Vinci's Demons, once you get past the first season, is a very rompy, Dumas inspired pulp adventure yarn, with real Indianna Jones energy. Spartacus, of course, is loving awesome. Preacher might be worth a look in. Rome and Britannia are good. And Pennyworth, genuinely, is loving great fun.

I gave the first episode of Yellowjackets a watch, and holy poo poo the costume designer did a great job in the flashback scenes, the wilderness getups are creepy as Hell. Plus the cast is pretty darn good.

Yes Quarry transcends it’s source material in a way that makes it less pulpy that the source. There are a whole series of books about the main character. The releases have some great pulp covers.

They didn't know if it would work or people would think it was too stupid, but it really set how they would plot out the rest of the series.

I like that it didn't just stick to 'each season is a new murder' and did some fresh stuff you wouldn't normally see in a detective story. Season 1 follows the murder of a child. Season 2 explores the follow of season 1 where all the cool dramatic TV show cop stuff they do in the first season bites them in the rear end, some evidence gets thrown out, and the killer is let free. There's also another murder plotline of the case that haunts the main guy in s1. Season 3 is a new case investigating a sexual assault. So we get a detective show where the victim is still alive. I didn't love the resolution to this one but it was overall interesting. It had a very weird sub-thread though of people in 2015 being shocked, SHOCKED, that a teenage boy would have porn on his phone. Like it's a whole b-plot running several episodes of how the hell he acquired pornography. What sick impulses would drive him to do such a thing. His mother compares him to a pedophile murderer and she's supposed to be a sympathetic character?. Also the answer isn't that he googled 'big boob' but someone gave it to him. And that person got it from someone else--who must be a HUGE PERVERT who watches porn. Someone finds a stash of a porn DVD and magazine and is mortified. They also had a plotline of illicit underage photos being shared taken from a girl without her knowledge. That is something properly appalling. I wonder if they were supposed to be one storyline but they decided it was too dark and split them up. Also like a small handful of people I've been watching Inferno and not enjoying it. I'm a huge sucker for stuff like that but it's just weaksauce. Between this and Foundation it feels like a bunch of people who wrote scripts 20 years ago finally had their big break. I'm in the mood for more mystery stuff (pref. serial, would take really good episodic) or Indiana-Jones-esque stuff that scratches the itch Dan Brown's Inferno doesn't. Mythological/historical stuff, assembling clues, looking for artifacts, pyramids with traps, stuff like that. I'm gonna check out Da Vinci's Demons. I'll take any other recommendations especially stuff that came out in the past few years.

Goddamn the golden moment of action television when we were getting Strike Back, Banshee and Quarry all at once and no one was really watching, but Jesus did Cinemax knock is completely out of the park (well maybe not Banshee S4 which was abysmal and not my canon ending and the abrupt cancellation of Quarry which I will never forgive. Just a drat shame).

The worst thing I can say about Foundation right now is that it feels like Store Brand The Expanse. Which, honestly, even being in the same sentence with the best scifi television put to film is high praise... But it’s just so obvious that Apple is trying to steal that magic: get someone who looks like Dominique Tipper and have her act like Naomi. And we need an episode where she is trapped alone on a ship. And more politics, get Lee Pace and have him be a shirtless Avasarala! Also get the bridge from Event Horizon, for some reason!

I can see the naomi comparison since both are black british women that are genius engineers and they have episodes where they are stuck alone on a ship and need to use their smarts to survive. Though I always root for Naomi while I wanted the girl in Foundation to die so I wouldn't have to hear her stupid narration again.

The timeline doesn't line up; Foundatiom was filming these episodes i.e. they'd be written and cast, when The Expanse season 5 was airing. And given how controversially received those episodes were, seems like a weird thing to copy. Beyond which, Gaal's actress has a South African accent! So you're basically down to "black" and "is woman". Beyond which, Naomi is older, a mother, and working class. Gaal is, well, she's meant to be from a subsistence community, but she's very posh on the show. They're not really that similar.
