Rewatching Lost for the first time since it aired and holy poo poo this show was so good (until certain aspects of the last few episodes, mainly involving a Falcon Punch) "Because you're in the wheelchair... and I'm not" So good

You have to divorce yourself from reality some, but the acting (Lauren Ambrose easily deserves an Emmy nod) and atmosphere are top notch. Great cinematography and the best food porn since Hannibal. I’m to the point I don’t care If they stick the landing or not. I just want to be on the ride. If I would have watched season 1 last year it would have been in my top 5 of 2020. Edit: The show triggers me to drink red wine while watching. Thanks Julian. nate fisher fucked around with this message at 13:19 on Feb 17, 2021 |

Escobarbarian posted:I thought this show was some goofy sitcom with Fred Armisen as an alien thing, but this is pretty intense! Maybe I should watch it It's okaaaaay. Sometimes I feel like the entire point of the show is to watch huge balls of water well up on cute cartoon faces, usually preceded by other cute cartoon people being popped into gory messes. It's pretty manipulative, often in ways that sit at odds with how unlikable its cast can be -- particularly its hero, Gary, a blatant self-insert who alternates between obnoxious mugging for the camera and demanding audience sympathy. He's also part of a fairly wonky romance subplot. It is trying to tell a fairly epic, if derivative, space opera, and I respect the ambition with which it's tackling that task. It's genuinely operatic, both in terms of outsized emotions and in terms of the scope of its narrative. And the gore is good, if that matters to you. The animation's decent too -- fluid, if a little too digital and weightless (helps they're in space). But I think it's often reaching for pathos that just isn't there, and its not as smart as it needs to be. I'll absolutely watch more of it, but I wouldn't say it's particularly good. Final Space is getting close to overcoming my assumption that it was a Rick and Morty knockoff. I don't even dislike that show, just didn't want the Kirkland signature brand Rick or whatever. So it's definitely not that?

It starts off looking that way and feels like it's being way too irrelevant with its setting, but there is a point to it and it's worth sticking with the show. It takes a few episodes to realize a big part of the first season is hammering into Gary just how serious poo poo really is.

It's a decent show, and very pretty, the main problem is just that the main character is absolutely insufferable and it isn't actually very funny when it wants to be.

I know some people can't get over Gary being annoying, but he's just so EARNEST that it's disarming. He's a character turned up to 11, but I would take someone like him in my corner any day. Like, all this universe ending other dimension horrors being dropped in his lap and he will still bend over backwards to be the best friend possible to you. It's the exact opposite of Rick and Morty in that regard. There's not a single nihilist bone in the show. It exudes positivity. There was some meddling by TBS in the 2nd season to try to tone down the arc and make it a little more episodic in places, but those were some mild dips and there hasn't really been hints that it's been the case for Season 3.

Final Space is okay, Rick and Morty is still tolerable. But the winner of that weird animated genre is definitely Star Trek Lower Decks.

I'll be the dissenting opinion and say that I found the UK Utopia and Amazon Utopia to be pretty interchangeable with nether really being all that superior to each other. I did find fault with some of the character motivations with the UK Utopia as the compressed episode count really didn't give the characters room to breath enough to provide real narrative explanation for some of the interpersonal behavior. In either case, both have aged poorly. We don't need conspiracy stories around manufactured heath crisis to push a vaccine with nefarious purposes on the populace right now. bull3964 fucked around with this message at 17:16 on Feb 17, 2021 |

I'm finally getting around to His Dark Materials Season 2. Surprised there wasn't a thread about it. Anyway it continues to be a good adaption of the books, and all the child characters are good actors. The only performance I don't buy is Lin Manuel Miranda's. He's hilariously miscast in his role as a scruffy aeronaut.

sticklefifer posted:I like it OK, but the show spent so much time making Mariner annoying and lazy and having screaming arguments instead of writing actual jokes. There's a lot of potential comedy in "the least important crew members on the least important ship", but the show didn't even stick to that concept for 10 episodes, and went for heavy fanservice instead. The show brings up fun concepts like the division for transporter accidents, but I really want it to be better. It really is a bummer how important to the ship/crew/mission all the main characters are. I think the show would've been better served by letting them be disconnected from the weekly crisis, but doing some thankless work behind the scenes that made it all go smoothly for the bridge crew. As it stands, they may as well all be bridge crew.

It's like they saw all the good TV shows and movies that have a pair loudly arguing in a way that's kind of funny, like in the most I watched most recently, The Cat Returns, and decided to make that half the dialog
