The Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things) have signed on with Spielberg to adapt The Talisman for TV. The book was a collaboration between Stephen King and Peter Straub about a tween boy who hitchhikes across America in a quest to save his mother. At the start of his trip he stumbles upon "The Territories" a parallel Earth full of magic and doubles of everyone he knows.

the thing I don't understand about The Shield is why Vic needs money for his kids so badly. Wasnt he involved with the gangs and getting his cut? what happened to that? it doesnt really show him wasting money on anything

If he has a house in California that's a million+ bucks right there. He's also paying for his kids' disabilities.

I vaguely remember they had some anti-vax plot where Vic and Corinne want to sue the vaccine manufacturers, but then their lawyer friend tells them "no, that's loving stupid, you're just wasting your money" and then it's never brought up again. That was actually a pretty good resolution. Also, he's a cop, so you know.

I watch a lot of cooking shows, and yeah they’re staged as hell but they’re still interesting because you can pick up a lot of tricks and (depending on the show) you get to see unique ingredients you weren’t aware of. My sister watches poo poo like My 600lb Life and it’s just exploitive misery porn. I don’t get it.

Yeah, I dont consider that first batch to be reality tv. Same goes with Drag Race or whatever—nothing wrong with theatre and kayfabe, that's all got artistic and entertainment merit. But just imagine who you would have to be to want to air your drama with an ex on a national TV show—and imaginr who that ex would be to agree. I just can't fathom why someone would choose to spend their time watching that sort of person doing or saying anything at all. Let alone getting into legit exploration.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about how real an MTV show is.

Wasnt he involved with the gangs and getting his cut? what happened to that? it doesnt really show him wasting money on anything On top of Vic caring more about the status and being a power player, I think the vague background thing they explain at some point is that all the cool crimes gang money went into their slush fund and barely got touched except for other dirty money needs. Also, there's some mention, I think, after the stuff with the Money Train that they're going to heavily cut back on nickel and dime bribes so that they don't get busted. Their whole thing was that they'd be the smart corrupt cops and just lay low until they could get a nice early retirement. The bigger thing would probably be that a semi-active/busy nurse and a cop with a shitload of overtime would be fine anyway, but eh, it's TV. wizardofloneliness posted:I thought two of his kids had autism and he wanted to send them to an expensive private school with more resources for that. That was actually a pretty good resolution. The anti-vax plotline was a little more of a punch in the gut for them. They want to sue and get told that they're being stupid and just want someone to blame (the show didn't toy with genuine anti-vax stuff for too long). They sign onto a lawsuit anyway and their expensive, good doctor drops their autistic son from her care and the effective trial program he was going into on the grounds of "lol, you really thought you could sue the company and still get admitted into their really exclusive trial that I'm running."

I started watching Kim's convenience and I love this show, although I am noticing a steady decline in stupid jokes and an increase in character drama as the series goes on, so maybe I won't like it so much later.

I'm on season 5 and it mostly sticks to the goofy jokes. There's still a few surprise attacks with the Jung drama.
|

My main disappointment so far was the subplot about Jung and his boss having this will they won't they thing and him getting all sad sack over it, that felt like I'd seen every beat of it 1000 times before. E: Also there was some big unintentional comedy when that tiny white guy held up Jung with the smallest knife in the world. I'm an out of shape loser and even I would've told that guy to just gently caress off back in my cashier days. Lurdiak fucked around with this message at 06:18 on Mar 7, 2021 |

I'm also korean american and seeing a show like Kim's Convenience is a revelation. But what I appreciate most is characters like Jung being a well intentioned guy but also being a dumb, himbo, meathead. I feel like we won't have an Asian character like that in America for another decade at least. Most Asian characters are meek and quiet and geeky, or in extreme cases like The Boys she doesn't even have any lines at all.

Yeah and I love that a lot of the side characters are immigrants or general minorities too, and it's not even a thing outside of them occasionally mentioning international politics to make bad dad analogies. For a show set in Toronto it's actually realistic, too, that city's as multicultural as it gets.
