It doesn't glamorize them at all. The first episode plays into the folksy facade of each of the 8ch owners then every subsequent episode has pulled out an "oh btw these people are extremely awful" moment of some kind, culminating in the guy that is Q slipping up and admitting it at the end. It's not the greatest docuseries but it's nowhere near the level of hagiography that the Vow turned out to be.

Uh, not even close. The documentary is pretty clear about them being skeezy, hypocritical, anti-Semitic perverts who don't give a poo poo about anything except their own power and being willing to see people die to keep the approval of online racists.

One of the episodes directly catches on tape the elder Watkins bragging to his right-wing grifter lawyer about how they programmed in code to 8chan that turns Jewish names into the Israeli flag colors, the lawyer looking uncomfortable and telling him that he's Jewish, and Watkins immediately responding, "I know, I can tell from your features."

They repeatedly show Ron Watkins being a porn addict who can't even drive his car without having porn playing and can't talk to a woman without demeaning her.

I can't even imagine the mindset of watching the show's depiction of the Watkinses and thinking, "Wow, they're cool!" unless you happened to already be in their 8chan demographic.

Backing this up. Watched the whole thing and in no way were anyone related to 8chan or Q shown to be functional good people. About the only person with any decent intentions was the OG Anonymous guy and he was very loudly repulsed by Gamergate and all the chuds stealing his tactics. The legions of Q are just like you would think: lunatics or the grifters playing them. It was a decent doc but really wished it had gone more into the build up to the 6th as well as the epilogue to all of that. I was saddened it only briefly touched on how Q has grossly infected and radicalized the religious and conservative parties in america as that is legit terrifying and will have long term effects with even higher of a bodycount. Was glad it had some time focused on Christchurch as people have probably forgotten about that with all the insanity of the past couple of years. Glad it came about as when the proper Q doc comes in about a decade they will have some nice footage to yank from. That is IF the world doesn't get cleansed in the holy fire from Trumpika.

Editing to stop derail. Sorry I was way oversimplifying and apologize profusely. What I should have said is that it feels even crazier now than in the past but that is just my limited point of view. Things were terrible back in the day as my parents gladly tell me but current politics really scare the poop out of me; especially after just finishing the Q doc. All this super crazy talk by the far right really does make me feel unsettled. I apologize my careless and ignorant words caused a derail that has no place in TVIV. I was wrong and hope we can talk about cool tv shows and I will go away for a while.

I think the last couple seasons hold up better than the Sorkin years. Though it's just as much a fantasy since you have a Democratic President reaching across the aisle to appoint a Republican Secretary of State. Also the Democrat is from Texas and Republican is from California.

Heh... oh they still wanted me or my kind dead, in jail or knowing our place but there were also less people in positions of government that believed in jewish space lasers or cleansing the world in holy fire. British government loving sucks/ is terrible and incompetent in every way but American government actually scares me a little. I miss the days when nazis were just punchlines to jokes or nothing you took that seriously. I fluctuate between feeling hopeful because people my age and younger SEEM less tied to racism and genuinely want the world to become a better place but also anxious because Gen X and Boomers sense their era is ending and are using 40k speak in real life and drooling over the apocalypse. Yeah it was never a great world but these past few years felt like they turned the dial up on crazy. Meh...sorry to cause a brief derail. Probably doesn't help I JUST finished the Q doc and jesus... those 8chan guys getting away with fomenting and weaponizing all this chaos and getting to slink away is aggravating. Sorry again.

For once it really is not you and it really was a "better" age. There are tons of articles about how political business has changed in the past couple of decades. Things were bad and messed up but there was this air of civility and half the stuff that certain parties do nowadays would get them laughed out of office. There are periods in the past where some people said insane things but it was never the general party stance. If you want depressing lols check out the Trump thread in GBS. We live in interesting times.

Gingrinch's Contract with America and Rush Limbaugh controlling the national conversation, while any real leftist positions were smothered by third way corportate giveaways. Black people were being dragged behind trucks and shot without reprecussions (i mean, some things didn't change).

We had the head of the republican senate say that Storm thurmond should have been president, and republican candidates say that they only believe in "legitimate rape".

The Bush administration wanted to bring christianity to the middle east and 21 year old graduates of evangelical universities ran national and international policy.

Lol, better age. At least now there's a viable and visible opposition. The protests against the Iraq War were the biggest on record, and it didn't blip on the national discourse. Today, it would have been alot bigger.
