At what point does SBMM kick in? I haven't tried ranked but I've hit level 18 and I usually go about 3 matches of absolute brutal shutouts followed by a match or two of 8 round arenas, and maybe 1 match where we win 3-0. Is it better to just play ranked at this point?

are you only playing arenas? I have no idea if unranked Arenas even has newbie lobbies, probably not enough players for it to even try and do that. If you're totally new it's probably better to get stuck in with unranked trios in BR for a while, then once you're comfortable jump back into Arenas. Much better newbie lobbies in BR while you get used to the game. That said, that experience is pretty normal for unranked Arenas. Depending on how good your team is you might stomp a couple games but you might also just encounter a streak of murder squads that just own you. Maybe 1 in 10 games you'll get the 8 round game that is like the only kinda fun thing in Arenas to have happen. I'd rather just play BR myself.

Also when you're new, the system has a lot less confidence in your skill, so your ELO-equivalent is shooting all over the place. Things "should" stabilize the more you play.

Apex Legends is hella fun but requires a significant time investment to the point of solid fundamentals probably being at least 150 hours in at least. Don't let number fool you though, it goes by really fast and is honestly fun with the right attitude. Having friends or goons to play with helps significantly with that.

I think for the first little bit, your attitude has to just be learning fights. Hot drop, run at people and get used to how to engage at the start of matches. Don't play passive unless it just works out that way. This is coming from a new player who is bad and trying to learn.

Regardless, I still constantly do dumb poo poo that could be avoided with a little patience. Lost round 8 in an 1v1 against an almost knocked Mirage because I didn't bother to check health/shields and deal with that. Just rushed into a face full of shotgun pellets. On one hand, the W would have been great, but I get more enjoyment from a competitive match (vidjas or sports) regardless of result than a lopsided win.

Best way to get better and have more fun in the game is to join the discord and play with goons. No one there will mind if you're new.

Yeah just to pile on here, the best part of BRs is that any given game is extremely low pressure. I gently caress up Kit and Umbasa's games more often than not and we always have a grand time, and I've never had a different experience with other goons.

For every other team based game I've played with goons, that has been my experience. Another part is I've never used Discord much. When I couldn't figure out who it was in Discord so we could avoid ruining either of our fun, I just avoided Discord.

I personally wouldn't enjoy Apex as much without a full crew to shoot the poo poo with and do comms when I feel like trying to win maybe. To address the other post you made, I dunno anyone on the discord right now who would ever knock a newbie for being bad. If they're still on the discord easiest thing to do now is not play with them as many a group can be going at once. I myself try to personally give constructive advice (sometimes unconciously) to new players and don't knock someone for not having the good habits that take time to develop. And hey, if you don't want the advice? Just say so and I'll just ruminate on how I hosed up and could have played better. edit: just saw the totally new post (didn't hit refresh before posting) there and wanted to say there is one person on the discord I will refuse to play with for a very specific reason, and wouldn't be surprised if you ran into the same dude. No pressure if you don't want to join, the game is about having fun and if ya enjoy solos I respect that. I've had some drat good games with pubbies. Oh no worries, I found the new Discord server and will be playing at some point. The other issue that had me reluctant (that I was talking about in Discord) is that I'm not 100% my Turtle Beach xbox headphones will let the BT connection use the mic for Discord voice chat. Then I looked down at the nice USB mic I use for meetings and I realized I could just use that. Seriously, the only reason I mentioned it was because it was such an anomaly from my normal shootybang goon experience.

Ah heck, we've already talked in the discord then. If you join the @LFG role people will ping whenever they're looking for groups, don't be afraid to just pop in when it's called. There's also a pretty decent spread of EU and NA players so you'll have plenty of times to choose from.

I remember when I started playing it was night and day 3 stacking with a guy on my friends list who made it to diamond that season just getting poo poo on every match vs pubs at my own level solo Q vs absolute potatoes a lot of games. The skill difference was so vast. I remember a kid I added as a friend (just because I barely Knew anyone who played) from solo Q had a fight where he ADS’d a guy maybe six inches away from him and just missed every shot 😂.

I'm wondering if there's another smoke hack going out because there was a wattson who got smoked and proceeded to just dome our entire squad through it with the bow. Bang is a terrible character and they need to entirely rework her, imo
