I'll need to check my sources on that one though, so feel free to take it as anecdotal.

To expand: Tap strafing allows you to do up to a 180 mid-air while keeping all of your momentum. All of it. This is nuts and it also works with Octane jump pad's second jump. Hell, tap strafing is one of the main reasons Octane is so ridiculous strong right now as he gets his Stim movespeed boost added on top. The inputs for tap strafing are completely unintuitive and no player would be able to figure it out on their own unless they were legitimately going out of their way to try and figure out weird movement quirks and bugs in the Apex Legends game engine. Relatedly, there is literally a person dedicated to trying to find out movement quirks and is the person that discovered and spread tap strafing.

Still a good basics introduction and also kind of funny as the youtuber literally says "please don't remove it or the top .0001% of Apex players will be sad." Tap strafing is just changing direction mid air (and keeping your momentum). It's in CS, Valorant, etc. The only difference is that in Apex it requires an extra input and the slide or jumppad makes it more effective because you can move quicker than run speed when doing one of those. https://twitter.com/TTrebb/status/1432748211593256964 on second thought, gently caress tap strafing. EDIT: If anything, they need to make these movement mechanics have better input window so that you don't have to use a mouse wheel to trigger things so precisely. Walljumping with scroll wheel is 10x easier than manually doing it with space bar, and it's a powerful movement tool all players *should* have access to without arcane keybinds and youtube tutorials. Like that reaction is honestly one of the main reasons I want tap strafing gone from the game. I know what it is because I've looked it up, understood the mechanics behind it and watched players much, much better than me put it to use in videos. Before I did that I saw some of the stuff those players did and was like "wtf is that how did that happen why can't I do it." Like, having to practice to better yourself is cool but not when it requires binding a specific input you'd never do otherwise and performing an awkward and otherwise useless set motions if tap strafing didn't exist. edit: to clarify what happened in that clip, it is normally totally impossible to curve around a pillbox like that with a normal jump. If the Bangalore had just done a normal jump and tried to curve around she'd have stopped probably halfway in the middle and lost all her momentum. Instead she perfectly curved around the end of the pillbox at full speed, doing an action that would normally take like 1.5 seconds in .5 seconds. It's also easy to try out in game yourself if you want, try and do what the Bang did and it becomes pretty obvious something else is involved in the action. I'm not really arsed about it one way or the other. Did it make for the occasional flashy clip from timmy/taxi/aceu pub stomping etc? yeah. But it was never a make-or-break thing anyway especially in the comp scene or pred lobbies. The Helen Lovejoy-esque "won't anyone think of the intended movement mechanics" pearl clutching is though. Tap strafing actually doesn't require special keybinds. You just tap W when you do the turn. The mouse wheel bind allows you to do greater than 90 degree turns and makes it easier to do. e: I think it might be fine if they just left it in and removed the ability to bind W to mouse wheel but that might negatively affect accessibility for certain people. Adding the jump buffer* from things like quake live would help a lot. *All a jump buffer does is give you a much bigger window to jump after hitting the jump key. That way you wouldnt need a mouse wheel to bounce off walls or bunny hop.

I was glad they removed the ridiculous bunny hopping while healing, as well as the nearly-unlimited dive range off jump towers. I’ve already got jump on scroll up and weapon switch on scroll down, so I totally support the removal of tap strafing since I would’ve had to relearn weapon switching with the keyboard if I wanted to do it.

I actually think the current iteration of bunny hopping while healing is cool and makes sense, you use your forward momentum from sliding to get some extra distance and maybe round a corner. It's cool, it's intuitive and easy to pick up yourself once you've seen someone do it. I've seen one clip of the old bunny hop and that looked nuts and broken. enojy posted:Oh yea, that sucks. That's nothing like what I envisioned from the term "tap-strafing." The crouching was just to initiate a slide jump for maximum speed while doing the tap strafe, I don't think Respawn ever plan on removing that.

Is "Shield Swapping" anything besides grabbing a better charged shield off a deathbox? My daily caffeine comes in the form of an "energy drink" that's local to Portland only (afaik) called Viso. Their formula has changed a few times over the years, but it's always been 300mg of caffeine & 100% RDA of a bunch of vitamins & minerals. The current iteration added 35% cold-pressed juice to it. Since I pretty much drink one a day, completing that challenge would be easy. Monster is gross as gently caress though, so I'll be taking a hardest of passes.

A 16 oz Monster has 160 mg of caffeine and change. Not sure what that equates to for coffee (large 16 oz maybe?). It's not that crazy in terms of just the caffeine, I would think the bigger issue would be the sugar content and whatever else is in Monster.

The fix is to make an actual tutorial to teach you some advanced techniques, not to remove high end tricks. Fighting games took, like, 20+ years to teach people what a combo is, though, so I don't blame Respawn for not making their tutorial particularly good. It's not a big deal, but much like systemically removing all the the bullshit edge case stuff with Crypto drone that was literally never relevant but always fun, I don't like what it says about their development mindset. wa27 posted:I was glad they removed the ridiculous bunny hopping while healing, as well as the nearly-unlimited dive range off jump towers. If we're talking about the merits of the mechanic, I don't understand why we should care how developers intend their game to be played. Emergent techniques are cool. Like, SFIV had plinking, where you could multiply inputs by hitting a specific sequence of buttons on consecutive frames. It was one of the weirdest, dumbest things I've ever seen in any game, but it made play way more fun because it opened up a whole new world of reliable combos. Rocket jumps were an accident of the physics engine, too, at first, right?
