I played more of TF1 than TF2, but I also like how the maps interacted with the relative size of pilots vs Titans. Some areas felt like great arenas as a pilot that were just tremendously claustrophobic as a titan, and areas that felt good as a titan were pretty large areas that often lacked cover as a pilot. It was a very nicely done change that shifted the map around a lot without actually changing anything that added a lot of fun movement and map control dynamics.

I just had a pubbie give up the high ground in a 3v2 that was in our favor, door-block me as I'm scrambling to safety after saving his hide and getting me knocked, and then hide out in a building without either reviving me OR preventing the enemy squad from respawning. Then getting insta-melted the moment someone saw him. If I didn't know any better I would think I was being griefed. Turns out I'm incapable of getting tilted but it is very possible to make me sad! It wasn't like he was rude or anything he was just made me feel the exact same cocktail of emotions that brachycephalic dogs do

I just had a 12 kill game as Caustic and I'm not even mad that we didn't win. No one wants to stand in fart gas even after the nerfs, which I thought would dumpster Caustic. It's still extremely easy to funnel people where you want them by placing traps around. If people can't shoot them, then they run away.

I just picked this up, enjoyed the first couple of games I played, and shelled out for the complete edition (which was still really cheap, something like $20 US). I've played for 5-6 hours now, still trying to get a handle on what legends I like playing. The only problem is that every time I do want to try someone out, the jumpmaster usually picks a hot zone and we just end up with no guns getting splattered by everyone else. I think I enjoy the playstyle more where you stay out of everyone's hair, get a chance to loot up and get settled as a team, and then swoop in at the end once the bubble's getting tight. I've never had a chance to try them in a match, but I want to give Wattson's fences a go. I really like them and Rampart's barriers for disrupting enemy movement, same with Revenant's tactical for freaking people out. By that train of thought, would Caustic be a good pick as well? I've never really got to use him in a match, but I found placing the traps a bit awkward in the firing range, especially since they need to be shot to activate. It feels like if you do that, everyone's going to know where you are anyway.

the main strike against wattson is that her kit is full turtle with no offensive use. if you need to get in you'll have to rely on others. also unranked tends to be full of W key players so your team will usually leave you behind if you try to hunker down in a building.

Brain In A Jar posted:I just picked this up, enjoyed the first couple of games I played, and shelled out for the complete edition (which was still really cheap, something like $20 US). In my opinion you should get used to hot dropping or hot-adjacent dropping, the reason being that you will improve faster than if you drop away from the dropship and loot for 15 minutes. Another disadvantage of cold drops is that you'll most likely get shredded by one of the final teams who has been killing their way through the lobby and are all hopped up on blood with their perfect loadout. Hot dropping is tough, though. The jumpmaster has to get it right or you land after teams and instantly die. Just don't worry about it. Load up the next game and try again. It doesn't take long to get into a new game. I don't think character choice is that important in this game as compared to getting used to how weapons handle and which weapons you like. It pays to spend 5-10 minutes in the firing range at the beginning of each session to warm up a bit so you are ready to murder. This is my advice. Oh yeah and Caustic traps will go off when an enemy gets near them.

I felt the same way for a bit, wanting to drop on the other side of the map and work my way back but once you get the hang of looting to where you can recognize a few guns and grab what you like without thinking about it, everyone will tell you to start hot dropping. It's the best way to learn and you get better a lot faster, even if you go through some spells where you die a lot. Another thing that worked for me was to play Loba a lot at first because I was always forgetting to loot something so I could just drop her black market and grab some armour, grab ammo if I had forgotten to pick up enough or grabbed the wrong type, or geared my guns and armour but had 0 healing items, etc. Another thing to, as others have mentioned, is to drop into the zones immediately adjacent to the common hot drop areas giving you a half-second to loot in peace with the intention of immediately rotating toward the fighting once you have a basic loadout to jump into the fight. (for instance, on KC drop into the rig/broken relay and then immediately push Capacitor/Labs. On Olympus I liked going Docks for a good while and then just following the gunshots.

Caustic is good. You can use his traps to hold doors shut. They can kick the door open but they’ll get gassed and they can’t get around the pylon.

Then getting insta-melted the moment someone saw him. I just had teammates do 11 and 0 damage in a plat ranked game in a 3 on 2 shortly after we dropped. One of them was bloodhound and the 2 opponents were in a building so it's not exactly like they got surprised by this -_-. I somehow ratted to third place for my +4 RP. I lost like 200 RP today mostly because of dog poo poo teammates like them who either can't fight, have zero common sense (let's fight a team outside the ring when we're in 5th place and go down instantly, let's run around like chickens with our heads cut off in labs, let's land directly on a team so that I don't get a gun or shield, let's not stick together and fight some completely separate team) or terrible positioning, or just literally don't know the basic poo poo that you need to know to be even remotely decent at this game (my teammates had a 2 on 1, there's a death box in front of them with a shield swap, neither heals and they both go down to the same bloodhound that I lost my 1v1 to at partial health while my teammates were jacking off on the floor above me). I think there was even a game in there where I knocked the shields off a Bangalore who was ratting and it was free KP for the team if they shot her. Instead she literally just ran right past them in a super open spot by the portal above Estates and then just dropped down to the bottom. We lost that game because our teammate decided to just go by their self and get beamed in the middle of the open field near Oasis between two squads because......? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There were games where I had adequate teammates and got +RP including a max KP game where we got third but all it takes to lose those points is 2 games where you get some complete imbecile jumpmaster or teammates that decide to make a braindead push without having the most basic understanding of how to fight while in fifteenth place and viola, I'm now 100 out of Plat IV instead of halfway to plat II. Obviously it's the start of the split so there's a good amount of diamond and above level players on other teams 3 stacking which makes things harder, things tend to get easier at the latter end of the split, but right now it's just a miserable experience playing with complete loving goldfish who are hard stuck plat IV and just throw ppl's RP away. And honestly pubs is even worse because it's even more braindead in terms of how ppl play (just chasing the second they hear gunfire and ten team third parties) and the matchmaking isn't any better. I know de-ranking would have unintended consequences like ppl smurfing so it's probably not the correct solution but I just wish there was something to make solo queueing ranked less painful because I'd actually like to meet some halfway decent ppl to play with (outside of the few friends I still have on Apex that aren't always on). I'm not even looking to be carried I just want the bare minimum of what should be expected out of teammates at this level. None of ya'll are playing the hyper aggressive W+M1 Wattson game. I run at teams and use fences to split up teams or gtfo if it's too hot. It takes some muscle memory but I can slide, q, spam M1 behind me in an empty corridor and not lose any speed in a slide jump. Then there's blocking zips, doors, supply ships, death boxes. People HATE her fences. The ult is good too for the regen, although it gets shot a lot when you're in the DANGER ZONE There's nothing funnier than dropping someone off screen because they ran through a fence you put down 5 seconds ago and chased them through.

Deffo feels like people see Wattson/Rampart/Caustic and think camping is all they're good for. A reactively playing Defence character can really help an aggro W+M1 squad enter and exit fights with on the fly advantage.

People think the defensive classes just sit in a corner and hide for half the game, the real trick with them is to rush into the middle of the giant firefight going on and claim a central building as your own and then use your defensive position to pick off every squad that has to share a single rock or barrel as their only cover.

They don't belong in Apex though. Laughs in Northstar/Ronin. No, seriously, the amount of wrong opinions about tf2 is staggering. If you guys tried to play tf2 as a generic shooter without all the acrobatics and pilot movement, you would have the same opinion about the pilot gameplay. Thing is, you never learned how to pilot a titan outside of 'press W' and have a strong opinion. vOv

You mean legion? Legion was the only titan that resembled ramparts minigun with Gibraltar’s gun shield. My favorite titan was Ion. Basic mobility but had a laser beam that could zap pilots out of the sky after they ejected. Ion could also rip a legion a new one by absorbing all of its bullets and shooting them back.

What is this talk of no mobility in the Titans? They have a great dash and move quickly, and several of them have actual flight or teleport mechanics. They just aren't tiny cracked-out wallrunning freaks who can attack from nearly any angle at any time.

Sometimes I have good times in this game, other times I crash out of ranked games due to “error: processing game logic,” return to my dead body with my teammates looting boxes for literally 2 minutes, ignoring my mobile respawn beacon and respawning me too far inside the ring to loot any of said boxes. Don’t worry, I code leaf’d out of my next game.
