The M stands for MURDERHAWK

Ran into maybe the best example of re-casting in Law and Order, possible even better than Casey Novak: murderer and rapist. I'm watching the episode where a bunch of guys beat each other up in a public park and Jack charges them with terrorism and one of the main guys involved is the dude who becomes a loving supervillain and kidnaps Benson.

Pablo Schreiber is in a few other episodes as well.

Another good one is Dallas Roberts, who was a trust fund drug addict early in Vanilla, a murdering lawyer who tries to kill Cutter in a bathroom late in the show, shows up as a closeted guy somewhere in the middle of SVU, and then later appears repeatedly as serial killer Gregory Yates.

Denis O'Hare, Bruce MacVittie, Bruce Altman and Michael O'Keefe have to be up there, too.

Also, I had forgotten how convoluted that Greg Yates storyline gets, especially when the medical examiner in SVU gets roped in as his accomplice. There were so many crossovers with Chicago PD for that storyline that it made my goddamn head spin.

Not just something, Peter Scanavino has a rare honor, having random roles in Law & Order, SVU, Criminal Intent and Trial by Jury all before landing the role of Carisi. Maybe they're building up his write off so they can have him join the new show.

I have a former acting teacher who went from being an occasional defense lawyer to The Man With The Worst Job In The World (watching kiddy porn to identify missing children). He did a great job of looking haunted lol

Anyone been listening to That’s Messed Up? It’s a podcast about SVU, going through mostly older seasons. They’ve interviewed a lot of not-famous one-off actors, but also Margaret Cho (she played a madam in one episode), Bob Saget, Dann Florek, and Diane Neal(!) so far.

E: also in ep 17 they interview Neal Baer, which was fascinating! From what he said, the writer’s room does WAY more research than I assumed, and the whole process seems very thoughtful.

I just realized the very easy way to avoid tying yourself to tropes of dangerous cities is to do L&O : FBI so they can just set the story wherever they want and have the FBI investigate crimes the local PD can't then have a federal prosecutor do the trial part.

I think it would also lend itself p well to the original format, cold open shows the setup or the arrival of our FBI detectives to handle this tricky case, then by the halfway point you can do the arrest and the prosecutor working with multiple FBI evidence teams to put them away.

Plus we've had a number of former ADAs head to the federal offices so its a ripe area to mine for nostalgic call back appearances.

Speaking of cop shows in big cities, I tried watching the episode of The Rookie last night to try out some other copaganda shows when SVU takes the season break and wow, such a hackey setup Oh boy I hope nothing happens at this season finale wedding where the groom is a special guest and the bride just personally insulted the head of a Guatemalan cartel and the DEA agent monitoring the cartels chatter.

Rest in Peace my friend you will be greatly missed..

The SVU episode Solitary is on right now, and Stabler has currently put himself in solitary confinement to know what Stephen Rea went through. This is not just pretty good, but I feel like it's just in general much better than anything they've done recently.

Oh man, I watched that episode recently. Whenever they do more character-focused eps like this, they tend to get a little “artsy,” for lack of a better word, with the editing and cinematography and I love it.

I feel like episodes like this underline the failure of Organized Crime. Like, the shows have clearly managed to pull off that sort of artsy/serious-within-the-standards-and-aesthetic of Law and Order.

Maybe the secret is Munch.

Organized Crime is hampered because Dick Wolf & Co. clearly want to have a prestige drama, a la True Detective, but Stabler isn't the character to carry it. And the ratings show it. The infrequent airing schedule and the awful writing have combined to make it, I believe, the least-watched show on Thursday nights.

But, like, aesthetically Solitary is closer to prestige drama. Organized Crime is more like, I dunno, visually NCIS but without the action. That's what makes this stick out: it suggests that the people running the show are perfectly capable of doing the things they're failing to do.

And, hell, Stabler is perfectly capable of being the central character of an eight-episode prestige miniseries: that's what happened with Happy!

If they wanted to do an eight-episode prestige miniseries they should have put a dump truck full of cash on Benjamin Bratt's lawn and had him come back. poo poo, the series already established that Rey Curtis had experience at OCCB.
