The first season of Misfits is only like 4 episodes I think? It also has the most memed scene in all of D20 I think

An interesting mention in the FAQ (https://docs.google.com/document/u/1/d/1X462O4XcMZF3nzgDbzXp9d93EtPrTm1VdgGxbJolaQo/pub):

"Misfits and Magic season 2 uses the system Never Stop Making Magic, a homebrew mix of Dropout’s Never Stop System and Hunters Entertainment’s Kids on Bikes."

Hmmmmm.... Dropout's Never Stop System? I'm intrigued to see what other parts of that system we didn't get in NSBU. The shots of the wooden character sheets? seemed to imply fluid skill values.

Hell yes. I trust Dropout to ensure that back-to-back seasons are not identical but also I love the idea of a vaguely-NBSU system in the Misfits and Magic universe.

Came up in the discussion of least favorite seasons and Misfits one was a big miss for me. Had a hard time getting into it from the unimpeded wish fulfillment of a few of the characters and Brennan being the runaway main character of it all. Starstruck has a lot of wins on wins on wins but it felt earned and great because so many of those wins were dumb luck and incredibly gaming. Probably a consequence of them only doing four eps, will give this one a shot.

dunno what you really mean by "unimpeded wish fulfillment"

if anyone didn't watch them, in addition to the four actual eps of misfits and magic there's a holiday special and a live episode with a different cast that might give more of a pointer as to what this next season is gonna be like than the original set

Misfits and Magic S1 was okay, although it did seem to be heavy on the high concept part and largely lacked story direction, but it was a short season. And a story arc is certainly doable if Aabria wants.

(I do remember from S1 that inserting combat in a system which doesn't inherently support combat didn't feel satisfying due to unclear failure states, but they've played with combat in variants in Mentopolis and NSBU since then.)

I started Misfits And Magic the other night. I can absolutely see how this goes completely off the rails and becomes the Kelmp show, which is a shame since all the other character concepts are really loving solid.

I've only seen the first Fantasy High, but at the moment this looks to be a very solid deconstruction in the vein of Bloodkeep rather than just a pastiche in the way the former was. Probably my preference tbh.

Also the players are having so much fun bagging on Harry Potter that Aabria can't get her plot started, which is very fun.

i feel like saying it goes off the rails implies that kelmp's whole deal wasn't something that the whole table decided was gonna be a part of the campaign from the jump

don't forget, everything was known early enough that real custom wands were made for everyone. i feel like talk about the show sometimes acts like brennan went rogue, instead of it being a thing like ally's character in neverafter where one pc is the one that pushes the narrative forward and brings the rest together

double posting but I do very much suggest that anyone watching d20 past the first few seasons go look up the complete playlists on the website; it gives you the after party shows after the relevant episodes and and also any other bonus content & it ends up being a very good way to get All of a show

IIRC, that was something that the showrunner at the time, Orion Black, admitted. Mulligan showed up to the table with the explicit Unwitting Dark Lord template, so he ended up as the season's protagonist. It wasn't intended behavior.

I'd imagine that part of MisMag season 2 will involve the other characters having substantially more prominence.

CatstropheWaitress

Four eps is also really tight to do a real "started from the bottom now we here" kind of arc. Junior Year did a phenomenal job kicking each of the intrepid heroes down and setting impossible odds... ...but then they rolled super well and largely got out of a lot of it unfortunately quickly. I feel for the DM's in that it's gotta be hard to balance the fun lovin' joyful improv of the show against the seemingly impossible stakes that make for amazing stories.

No Boots on the Ground,
Puny Mortals!

I think a reasonable reading of how it went is: "Everyone knew what was going on at the start, but the character ended up being Too Big at the table."

With 4 episodes (one of which is pure introduction), it's pretty easy to get lost in the sauce, and before you know it, it's the Evan Kelmp and Friends show.

I’m watching season one of Mystic and misfits and I really like it, more than never stop blowing up. The smaller group size and focus on one specific thing is great, and I can’t get over Brennan’s monologue from the end of the first episode.
