Cant believe I stumbled across a 28 minute old trailer randomly. That looked very fun.

I've played a lot of Battlefield games, going all the way back to BF2. Am I the only one, that still can't get their head around planes and choppers? It blows my mind that BF flying is considered dumb and arcadey but the most I can do without crashing is fly from point A to B in a straight line, shoot things along the way and eject at the other end.

Weird thing is I was actually pretty good at flying helicopters in Bad Company 2, but they changed the controls up in 3 and 4 that it became a lot more complicated to fly the bastards, needlessly so really

Kibayasu posted:

The people who complain about C4 attacks are the vehicle equivalent of snipers on a hill. They just want to sit somewhere risk free and shoot at infantry with their 1 hit kill weapon. And in the case of vehicles you don’t have to worry about being 1 hit kill back and don’t even have to land headshots.

Heck I made a point about getting good with the MAA in BF4 so I was constantly looking up into the sky and not being able to see things coming at me. It was just as much fun dealing with C4 attacks when they happened as it was shooting the jets. I typically died to someone on an ATV once so at that point I knew someone was around doing it, and then it became an awesome game of cat and mouse. I had to keep an eye out for ATVs out in the distance, thinking if they were going for me or just driving to a point, look at the main map all the time in case someone spotted an ATV and it was out in the middle of nowhere (like say it was trying to hide from a tank for as long as possible). They had to think about the routes they would take to try and get as close as possible before being obvious. Maybe they had to wait until they knew I was shooting at a jet or when I was running away from something else that started shooting me. There were a few rare times some dedicated C4’ers even accused me of cheating because I saw them coming too often which is always a :smug: feeling.

C4 tricks like that are fine as it actually takes some bit of skill and teamwork to pull off, it's not like say Titanfall 2 where anti Titan weapons are so effective and easy to use that it often feels pointless to even use Titans cause they'll just get blown up within 30 seconds of getting called in before accomplishing much

Hughmoris posted:

Agreed, I loathed how much they minimized vehicle play in the last couple Battlefield games or the Battlefront games for that matter

real good feeling about this one but wondering about how the vehicle summoning is balanced. if the other team can shoot down vehicle drops and you cant spawn them endlessly i think it could work pretty well. but like where do you realistically spawn a jet. are people going to spawn jets into the ocean while they're on a boat

Tying everyone to specific characters instead of just doing it like BF5 *promised* to do with class archetypes with more specialized abilities while allowing people to make whoever they want for customization does seem to kinda clash with their whole "War fought by PMCs and ragtag groups of people from various backgrounds and nationalities" idea and kinda a bummer since the character customization was one of the few things BF5 did sort of right.

hmmm, dunno about that teaser trailer

obviously its not gameplay footage, but while parts of it and many of the announced features are appealing to me in the abstract, it simply comes off as a bit too fan-servicey and safe ("look at just how much it's Battlefield, including all your old favorites like jihad jeeps and mid-air MANPADs!")

I can't reasonably be mad that they're doing what people (including myself) have wanted them to do, but a lot of what BF V was ostensibly going to do also sounded nice in the abstract

my hangover from BF V is probably large enough that they was simply no way they were going to win me over with a single video, but either way its just not quite giving me the fizz

eh, plenty of other reasons to do it/possible sources of inspiration - i.e. it could just as easily be Rainbow Six Siege as Apex, and from a monetization perspective it obviously gives lots of opportunities to sell people new skins and specialists

it also simplifies balance to some extent since your "class" just becomes a single ability that isn't integral to the core gameplay in the way support/medic/etc. were

It's obvious why DICE/EA is going "Hey remember Rendezook?" while also showing maps that vaguely look like Damavand, Dawnbreaker, Lumphini Garden, and Operation Whiteout. They want people to think about 3 and 4 from the start, the games people actually remember fondly, and not 5 which arguably drat near killed the whole franchise. Yeah it's cold corporate focus group BS, but it makes sense

My guess is ground vehicles can be spawned wherever there's room for them to land, air and water vehicles will probably need specific locations to be called in, like air strips and helipads for air vehicles and docks in bodies of water for boats

Fried Watermelon posted:

Yeah I had issues with Battlefront 2 but that wasn't one of them, since the points needed for vehicles or elite troop types usually didn't take too long to farm up

uh, world war 2 was in no way a departure from the "core of the franchise setting," it just sucked

they're obviously not going to go back to World War 1 straight away, so going back to the slightly near-future setting of the last well-received mainline BF titles before that is a perfectly reasonable decision from both a "true fan" and bland focus group perspective, but that's why I was saying it's rubbing me slightly the wrong way - it's the most safe and conservative course of action for the franchise

hopefully that at least means the odds of it being genuinely awful are much lower (though again their last effort somehow botched world war 2), but simultaneously I think the odds of it being very mediocre in the style of a call of duty annual release are substantially higher (which doesn't rule out the possibility of a pleasant surprise, ala 2019's Modern Warfare)
