Déjà Vu is a point and click adventure game set in the world of 1940s hardboiled detective novels and movies. It was released in 1985 for Macintosh – the first in the MacVenture series – and later ported to several other systems, including the Amiga.

Why this man is at a corner, spying on a women while holding a picture of him at that same corner, spying on that same women is beyond me. The gf and I theorized that maybe a rival detective took it as a way of intimidating him like “oh look, you’re not that sneaky!” Or, and this is the theory I liked the most, he took the photo himself to show a client “See! Look! I’m totally doing my job” but how long can that charade go on? It’ll be 6 picceptions deep before the client is like no, you’re fired.

Anyways

I’m going to be let’s playing this game basically blind. I played it once or twice like 8 years ago on my Windows phone that I downloaded emulators on, I liked it but didn’t get far into it because point and click adventure games are loving difficult for my dumb brain but I’m gonna try my best. LETS SOLVE SOME MURDERS!

Episode 1, amnesia and dead bods
Episode 2, I’m kinda violent apparently
Episode 3, sewer gators and cars exploding
Episode 4, I knew I’d get stuck but I didn’t anticipate a softlock, rip
Episode 5, good cop bad cop feat CirclMastr
Episode 6, thick ladies and drugs feat CirclMastr
Episode 7, ketchup, a hitman and a dog named taco feat CirclMastr.
Episode 8, drugging sleeping people feat CirclMastr
Episode 9, grand finale feat CirclMastr

I loved this game when I was young for the nes, but I could never understand how to do the last puzzle even with a gamefaq.

Did you ever go back and finish it?

I can’t imagine I’d fair any better honestly. If you stick around and I also somehow make it to the end maybe we can work together and you can go all put right your greatest failure in life to some degree.

New episode, I run into alligators while being lost in the sewer and cars keep exploding. Plus there’s a shady taxi driver, very eventful episode.

Episode 3, sewer gators and cars exploding

This was the first adventure game I ever beat as a kid. Of course I played the NES version, not the PC.

How hard would you say it is? I went into it fully expecting not to be able to finish it because I suck at point and click adventure games. Also not sure what version the one I’m playing is.

It has less bullshit than Uninvited or Shadowgate, which also came out for the NES in similar style, but it's not bullshit-free. There are some cheap deaths and not enough signposting, especially for a game that lets you hop in a cab and go wherever.

EDIT: I know you're not using a guide, but how would you feel about a co-commentator?

That’s good to hear at least, hopefully I won’t get too stuck. But a co-commentator? I could get behind that. I’ve only ever done duel commentary once with my girlfriend, it was fun.

I don’t wanna spoil anything but I do softlock the game and go on a tangent at the very end.

You miiiiight not be softlocked but odds are that you are. Hit me up on Discord sometime (CirclMastr#0848) if you want to do the co-commentator route.

Excited to see how this goes. I didn't know that this was a Mac game first. I only ever saw it on NES, and since I didn't own one, was never able to get far into it since I would only get to try it at a friend's house (they didn't like it much so they hadn't played it on their own).

SPOILER: The LP is definitely in an unwinnable state. You need a lot of quarters. See the next spoiler for where to get quarters

Play the slot machine in the casino. You will eventually win at least once before running out of quarters

No prob!

Good luck, you're on the right track.

There's a few notable differences between this version and the original NES, I think. Besides the fact that you can use a mouse, the other is an incredibly severe time limit. Lots of needed quality-of-life improvements all around. I really enjoy seeing this playthrough to spot the differences.

I think the time limit only ran on until you reversed your amnesia in the original game.

I still think that Ace really did owe siegel and the iou is real. Which makes it easier to frame Ace as the fall guy.

the tissues reference is for the old movie "To Have and Have Not". You can search for "the whistle scene".

I asked CirclMastr about this since he’s the one with the memory and neither of us could recall reading anything that straight up says wether the debt/IOU was real or fake but CirclMastr did say he thought Ace and Joey knew each other before since Joey had a poster of Ace in his boxing days. He also said he could remember if it stated it specifically but he thought Joey might of been Ace’s boxing manager back in the day.

IOU aside... at any rate, it's pretty clear that Ace was a close associate of Joey. Maybe even amicable. Otherwise, Joey wouldn't be keeping Ace's photo in his hallway.

Which makes Vickers look incredibly heartless. Ace had done nothing but maybe be a hired gun for Joey, but there is no clear bad blood between her and Ace. Ace was just a convenient fall guy.

Congrats! This game was wicked hard on the original mac and it's awesome to see it played. Kinda shows its age due to the lack of niceties that you'd find in more modern games such as an updating journal and a list of objectives, etc. But it's still fun, the way it is now.
