it's actually even stupider than that, huh? the bit of code in charge of verifying signatures doesn't actually verify signatures, it delegates that to some other library. and because this is cryptocurrency bullshit, you can choose what libraries get used when you create a transaction. the attacker just swapped out the usual signature-verifying library for one that always says "yep, all good here".
