HELLOMYNAMEIS___ posted:https://www.pcmag.com/news/fujifilm-and-ibm-set-world-record-with-580tb-magnetic-tapes Aren't magnetic tapes preferred over solid state for long-term storage?
![]() |
yes. if you keep them within temp + humidity limits then tapes will last 30+ years. they also degrade in a way that means even if you get errors then you can probably still recover *something*. it's also really cheap per gigabyte. hard drives might last, or might just poo poo themselves one day and lose everything. flash isn't really tested beyond ~10 year retention.
![]() |
flash usually has the issue that each bit is really a small capacitor. they hold a charge, and while the resistance between the two charged "plates" is very high, it's still not infinite, so they will discharge sooner or later and you'll lose your data. there's really no way to avoid that for magnetic stuff, i remember hearing that eventually the magnetic field of the earth takes its toll and degrades the data, but i never checked so maybe that's bullshit i think optical media can be used long term if it's made specifically for it?
![]() |
with optical media the problem is the plastic. nonrewritable optical encodes data in physical details of the aluminum layer, that should last basically forever if stored safely but you need to be able to shine the laser on it. writable optical media uses light-sensitive dyes and I don’t think it lasts nearly as long

weirdly, the tigerdirect cheap discs have done very well in my pile of early aughts burns. unsurprisingly, memorex has done poorly; even at the time they were the worst for bad burn rates. because of that, they're mostly tv tuner recordings that i now own dvds or blu-rays of overall, i haven't lost anything of significance, but i'm glad i decided to dig out the spindles now and not five years later

i have no idea where a single disc i burned ever is now, and i too have still lost nothing of significance.

I remember when Steam came out I had a big binder of CDs (a mix of purchased and pirated) with the keys written on bits of paper and stuffed into the cover pockets of the binder. I thought that was a good long term system, while in theory Steam could close down over night. 20 years later it faithfully remembers all the poo poo I bought while that CD binder is long, long gone.
