we somehow have a dumb 4K Visio and just do all our streaming through the cable box. we only have cable still so mom can watch her house flipping shows, Bravo garbage and the local news

bobbilljim posted:samsung shows you ads inside the tv ui can confirm. I swore I wouldn't buy another one because of that bullshit but they were so much cheaper and Dune looks so good. have not yet got round to putting a pihole on the network to see if it stops them but iirc they might actually hard code the ad server IP addresses because they're pricks e; samsung are maybe the only one that support every streaming service needed as well. Sony somehow managed to gently caress up their software and only support like 2 or 3. Also lol android.

its a small square that you only see when you switch inputs. on principle its pretty annoying but practically speaking it was definitely the better buy than the lg oled that would have definitely suffered burn in from me falling asleep with sekiro paused on it

now i'm really curious if adguard blocks it if you can adjust dns on the tv itself someone give 94.140.14.14 or 94.140.15.15 (2a10:50c0::ad1:ff / 2a10:50c0::ad2:ff) a try, i get why someone would be skeptical using it on a full network i would but my tv doesn't show ads anyway lol

Beeftweeter posted:having used it for years, they're really good about fixing broken poo poo really fast so it's honestly a better solution imo, if you want to trust them trip report: TV DNS changed but no immediate effect, maybe it caches though. will set up a pihole later because then I can actually see what it's trying to connect to. I swear I read that Samsung use some level of IP hard coding but I can probably block that too if I try hard enough.

Powerful Two-Hander posted:trip report: TV DNS changed but no immediate effect, maybe it caches though. hmm considering the nature of the ad (most likely not frequently updated, embedded platform, etc.) i'd say it's probably cached in which case it may never go away, unless you can like factory reset it or something someone with a sarnsung tv can probably definitively answer this though
