You're right, it's definitely not the absolutely massive amount of product opened during release week and the laser focus everyone has on it leading to the hits being broadcast to huge audiences. Instead it's a big, probably illegal conspiracy with Michael Rubin himself placing the hits into packs and making sure they go to his favorite breakers.

Stroke of luck!

It could honestly be a little of both and nobody would have a way to easily prove it. It was also really lovely of Topps to imply that the legend autos (Ichiro, Griffey, Bo Jackson, etc) would be in hobby boxes when they aren't.

In other vague news, I finally got the last card I needed for a small rainbow from 2023 and sent it all off for grading. I don't think every card's going to come back a 10 but it'll be a lot of fun to display all seven cards in slabs together.

I try so hard not to buy wax, but Costco had those drat flagship boxes so I grabbed one. It was junk until the final pack when I opened this Elly RC /50. That'll pay for that Costco run, tyvm.

I was in a local antiques store today and one of the booths had a few sealed wax boxes for sale. I looked at the price tag and saw that an absolute crazy person was trying to sell a box of 1989 Topps for $65.

If Topps Pristine was called Topps Chrome Pristine it would sell like hotcakes.

The "player silhouette over a neat background/pattern" is loving exhausted. Topps Finest, Topps Chrome Black, Topps/Bowman Inception, Topps Pristine, Topps Chrome Cosmic are all the same formula.

I finally got around to scanning some of my vintage tennis collection. Thought people might enjoy.

Fred Perry (HOF) – 1937 Ogden's
Player: Won 8 Grand Slams and was the first player to win the career Grand Slam. Almost certainly more famous for his clothing line these days.
Card: Great forehand shot with immaculate white outfit. This set has a very cool Jessie Owens card in it.

Bill Tilden (HOF) – 1931 Wills Lawn Tennis
Player: Won 10 Grand Slams. “Tilden spent all of his adult life attempting to create a father-son relationship with a long succession of ball boys and youthful tennis protégés.”
Card: Love the overhead smash action shot. Very kinetic. Very cool set with almost watercolor sketches of all the players.

Helen Wills Moody (HOF) – 1934 Gallaher
Player: Won 19 Grand Slams. Had a 180 match win-streak and did not lose a single match between 1927 and 1933! She over-powered other women with strong and accurate baseline drives. She beat the 8th ranked male player in 1933! Helen was one of the first global celebrities.
Card: Absolutely love the image on this card! The landscape aspect, cool action shot, and bright blue background. A Favorite.

Don Budge (HOF) – RC? – 1934 Mitchell's
Player: Won 6 Grand Slams. First person to win all four Grand Slam events consecutively.
Card: Awesome popped collars on his outfit. Exudes coolness with his confident vibe. Card is VERY sharp.

Suzanne Lenglen (HOF) – 1925 Turf
Player: 8 Grand Slams and No. 1 from 1921-1926.
Card: Cool image of a Wimbledon grass court match. Neat crowd details. Almost art nouveau in color.

Rene Lacoste (HOF) – 1931 Wills Lawn Tennis
Player: Won 7 Grand Slams. Started his famous polo shirt business in 1933.
Card: Love the cap in combination with the lunging shot.

??? - 1958 Sport Sibice?
Card: Weird card that I got in a lot. Really dig the green color and simplified design.

Jack Kramer (HOF) – 1954 Wheaties
Player: Won 3 Grand Slams and was one of the first dominant serve and volley players.
Card: Hand cut from a 1954 Wheaties cereal box. I really like the bright orange color. The set has a notable George Mikan card.

A memory of mine just popped up of when I was a kid and bought a $5 basketball pack that had 1 card in it. It was crazy expensive at the time and I think I pulled a Stephon Marbury.

The card was die cut and had the player name on the bottom. It was damaged out of the pack though, and the shop owner told me to send it in for a replacement, but young me just figured it was a waste of money as they'd probably just throw away my letter.

I don't know where the card is anymore but want to track it down and buy another for nostalgia's sake.

There are almost 2k cards on COMC for Stephon Marbury and I'm getting real tired of scrolling through. Anyone happen to know what packs in ~1995-1998 were sold one at a time?

Not sure, but if you search MARBURY DIE CUT on COMC there are only 12 results. Is it one of those?

First thing I did after I posted, but no it wasn't one of those :(

"SPX" and looking at photos of the foil pack sound really familiar. None of his cards look like it though. He was definitely on the Timberwolves, and the card looked like the silhouette of a bottle of vitamin water (wide at the bottom, towards the first third of the card it starts to taper).

It could just be my memory is bad nowadays. I'm going to dig through all his cards on COMC to see if I can find it though.

Edit: Ok, I'm pretty sure the card I was thinking of is a mixup of player and card brand. I'm 99% sure the SPX format is what I was thinking about, but the image of Stephon Marbury is this one:

https://www.comc.com/Cards/Basketball/1996-97/Skybox_Z_Force_-_Zensations/14/Stephon_Marbury/1464336

I clearly remember also owning KG:

https://www.comc.com/Cards/Basketball/1996-97/Skybox_Z_Force_-_Zensations/7/Kevin_Garnett/1464329

I now forget which player I had that was the SPX one. The checklist is pretty small so I'd figure it would just pop out at me.

Okay, I just completed a huge review & pull of rookie cards from all my old 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s sets, along with the ones I had already stashed at the Old Goon Home.

I have a massive number of somewhat-valuable cards in top-loaders. Griffey, Bonds, Maddux rookies, sort of thing -- if you can name a star from that era, I have several RCs probably. (A lot of McGwire and Sosa but nobody seems to care...?) Should I just feed them into COMC a little bit at a time, and see what happens? I don't really have any emotional attachment to these, and if I can get a bit of value then it might be fun.

Couple of auto-ed baseballs (Griffey and Nolan Ryan) but I have no idea how to begin selling those for a fair price.

edit: I've never used COMC and I'm just now getting started

It's amazing how much bullshit you pull from wax packs and keep forever. I probably have 100k baseball cards of absolutely zero value, spanning the last five decades.

Here's a 1981 Topps Rickey. The top-loader is scuffed up but the card is in good shape. Bottom right corner maybe a bit touched.

I collect printing plates (~80 right now)

Some are real thin while others are mounted to a standard card stock. Usually the higher end sets like National Treasure get that treatment.
