They had been trying to make a mid-engined Corvette for like 50 years. What are you on about? Also MR/M4 > All else. GM realized the FMR chassis had been pushed as far it was allowed to go. Also while it’s hard to prove, GM’s internal management was so rattled by the Fiero they intentionally severely nerfed it as they knew it’s chassis dynamics were superior to the C4 Corvette’s despite it being made of Citation parts.

I don't think it really was that as much as a reckoning among GM management at the time that having like 8 different divisions building oddball projects that only stepped on its own market share made zero loving sense now that they didn't have a stranglehold over the US market. It's really shocking that GM has stayed alive given how it was structured and run pre 1980s

I would also say that it is very GM to gut an ambitious project to follow a more conservative approach, they had a functional EV in the 90s and shuttered the whole thing. The Chevy Vega allegedly was going to have a rotary engine to the point where GM had functional prototypes doing lifetime mileage simulations and they abandoned that completely at the last minute.

Here’s where I’d disagree slightly - Roger B Smith’s attempt to reform it made it even worse. He is the absolute worst CEO of the 20th century IMO. Keep in mind the Japanese market had a shitload of market duplication (do you like the Mazda Familia? How about 6 different versions of it!!) but avoided the issues because they were good at the expensive bit sharing (driveline and chassis). GM would have 4 similar looking cars on the outside but they would have 5 different engine and transmissions among them. Frond fucked around with this message at 21:10 on Dec 8, 2022 |

Keep in mind as well they were Turbo pioneers and just fluffed that off completely, sold 2 really good engine designs to other companies (and then had to buy back one from AMC embarrassingly like 8 years later.)

GM did a ton of dipshit stuff in the 80s but consolidating the engineering and engine work and starting to try and stop divisions from stepping on each other was absolutely the direction they needed to head in. The only reason the japanese were creating new brands was to move up market since they were limited on sales units, the post 2008 brand consolidation at GM realistically should've happened by the mid 80s at the latest. Probably could've dominated the RV market if they had stayed in it instead of building one really good model and just letting it age out

It would've been a lot cleaner and better for the company to just say Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick no longer are brands than what happened which is they said "Okay you still have a design team but you now have to build for these segments we already cover with this pool of frames and this pool of engines and drive trains" across like 8 different brands

What's with all of the hate on GM when Chrysler is right there? If nothing else, GM at least makes fantastic powertrains. It's the one shining beacon they have that puts them above the other US-based manufacturers. Even their new EV's while being ugly as gently caress and with questionable interior quality have very clever powertrain designs that maximize out put in the most space efficient format* *except for the new Hummer. That thing is an abomination.

I actually like GM quite a lot and loved that stupid rear end GMC Safari I owned for a bit but they absolutely have made completely idiotic choices down the line. Chrysler is stupid but there's only so many times you can comment on the fact that they still make the 300 before it becomes exhausting.

i had to drive a ford fusion rental car all week and it did the following: tried to nudge me out of making turns because it thought i was leaving the lane kept flashing people because it turns the brights on automatically at the wrong times no interval wipe mode because that slot is taken by automatic wipers which absolutely couldn't handle drizzle no carplay . in 2022 weirdly impossible to see out of side mirrors probably hte most boring interior ive seen since some other poo poo i cant remember but it was like 50 times faster than my TACOMA so i threw it around like a stockcar
