Ah we’ve got lawyers telling us that it’s urgent that their SaaS app that we have nothing to do with is fixed

Thoughts and prayers for anyone supporting Windows desktops and servers this morning. Pouring one out. Meanwhile, I'll get to work on my AIX servers using my MacBook. How many of us are old enough to remember McAfee flagging svchost.exe? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

I'm old enough to remember it, enough of a fuckup to have been working a poo poo job at the time so it wasn't my problem, and worse, old enough to go "huh, 2010 wasn't that long ago"

I used to manage Novell. 2010 issues is like yesterday.

See I just avoided that kind of problem by not having kids, so their constant growth does not remind me of my own fragile mortality.

This is bizarre. So there's "computer problems" on the entire planet, because some intern pushed a bad AV config? e: oh there's also an unrelated Azure outage apparently, lmao Sywert of Thieves fucked around with this message at 14:33 on Jul 19, 2024 |

Did some high risk work last night in the core and we were keeping a close eye on everything through the morning. Suddenly at 4AM traffic patterns started going wild and it caused a minor panic. it was just a fortnight patch lmao

Somehow, one of our executives seemingly melted(?) his SSD. His is the bottom one, included a different one on top as a point of comparison![]() He complained to my boss that his laptop kept blue screening and saying it didn't have a drive, and then would reboot and work fine for a while. Looking at it, I'm shocked it booted at all for as long as it did
I think that was done in manufacturing
I'm not an electronics expert but that looks like excess flux (more or less fine) or possibly some kind of anti-tamper glue; not anything actually melting.

It was briefly Liquid State Drive.
I'll agree that that looks more like a manufacturing defect than user abuse, unless he managed to spill coffee/Guinness in precisely the right spot.

I would also call manufacturing defect or design error, it doesn't look sticky or proper melted.

kensei posted:What ever happed with your interview, and if you do not want to publicly name and shame DM the company to me cause I need a good laugh. The sign up thing wasn't supposed to allow people to sign up while the director was on vacation, but apparently he set his vacation schedule like 3 minutes AFTER sending the appointment email, during which I was able to snag a spot. Anyways, I rescheduled the interview for today. I think it went well. The IT Director was in the interview and he and I have gotten pretty close since I started. He messaged me later via slack to tell me I killed it and he's putting my name forward as his choice. So... tentative ?

They want my references. We only do that before extending the offer. Last time they offered me the job literally an hour later. One of them has to be my current boss, who I am already on thin ice with. A gamble, for sure. So let's light this candle, I guess.

Why does it have to be your current boss? I've always used a friendly coworker so that management didn't know I was out looking for a new gig.

Absolutely same here. Don't ask people if you can use them for references if you know they're going to give any future employers a bad one. Best of luck AFW

IIRC in US employment law, contacting the previous employer only allows them to ask them and previous employers for and receive confirmation that you work/ed there. If they trash you, or the potential employer even asks for anything other than that (there's always wiggle room because capitalist Utopia) they can run afoul of employment lawyers that are always hungry. Now I need to go look it up.

This is an internal hire for another department in public education. There's a lot of very specific rules that need to be followed, and one of those is that your current supervisor has to be one of your references. I specified for them not to reach out to her unless a job offer is guaranteed. I don't need that bullshit drama on top of everything else if I don't get this position. I mean my other two references are the IT Director and the CIO/CISO who both specifically requested I list them as a reference, and the CIO is the hiring director's boss so...
