Hello fellow old.

The worst part for us was systems in active ORs bootlooping. Nothing like doing delicate work that can have life or death consequences while screens are flashing and doing stupid poo poo in your peripheral vision constantly.

Somehow, one of our executives seemingly melted(?) his SSD. His is the bottom one, included a different one on top as a point of comparison

He complained to my boss that his laptop kept blue screening and saying it didn't have a drive, and then would reboot and work fine for a while. Looking at it, I'm shocked it booted at all for as long as it did

I'm not an electronics expert but that looks like excess flux (more or less fine) or possibly some kind of anti-tamper glue; not anything actually melting.

I'll agree that that looks more like a manufacturing defect than user abuse, unless he managed to spill coffee/Guinness in precisely the right spot.

Our Dell Latitude 7400 fleet got a shitload of m.2 drives replaced, the photo looks like a normal wear for a laptop based setup, which has usually poor thermals on the drive area. I would also call manufacturing defect or design error, it doesn't look sticky or proper melted.

The sign up thing wasn't supposed to allow people to sign up while the director was on vacation, but apparently he set his vacation schedule like 3 minutes AFTER sending the appointment email, during which I was able to snag a spot.

Anyways, I rescheduled the interview for today.

I think it went well. The IT Director was in the interview and he and I have gotten pretty close since I started. He messaged me later via slack to tell me I killed it and he's putting my name forward as his choice.

So... tentative :yotj:?

They want my references. We only do that before extending the offer. Last time they offered me the job literally an hour later.

One of them has to be my current boss, who I am already on thin ice with.

A gamble, for sure. So let's light this candle, I guess.

Absolutely same here. Don't ask people if you can use them for references if you know they're going to give any future employers a bad one.

IIRC in US employment law, contacting the previous employer only allows them to ask them and previous employers for and receive confirmation that you work/ed there. If they trash you, or the potential employer even asks for anything other than that (there's always wiggle room because capitalist Utopia) they can run afoul of employment lawyers that are always hungry.

Now I need to go look it up.

This is an internal hire for another department in public education. There's a lot of very specific rules that need to be followed, and one of those is that your current supervisor has to be one of your references.

I specified for them not to reach out to her unless a job offer is guaranteed. I don't need that bullshit drama on top of everything else if I don't get this position.

I mean my other two references are the IT Director and the CIO/CISO who both specifically requested I list them as a reference, and the CIO is the hiring director's boss so...
