in windows 11, typing is slow now.

What? How? E: legitimately wondering how typing is slow, to be clear. Not questioning your assertion, just asking how something so basic is hosed up. There's an input delay?

Dumb poo poo like trying to automatically pull up results as you type, and when it loads a bunch of stuff in a drop down menu it moves the cursor back to the beginning so if I'm searching for microwaves I end up typing avesmicrow. Websites that don't let you use the Home and End keys in text prompt boxes drive me loving insane.

i tried to use duckduckgo for a few weeks but my anecdotes were very frustrating. i found it very difficult to ever get a niche result in any field. i'm back to begrudgingly using google with the direct-to-web-tab modifier

Yeah, same - duckduckgo works perfectly well for my home needs, but at work I'm looking up error codes and vague lines from logs that like 500 people worldwide ever look at and DDG can't do poo poo so it's Google all the way.

i agree that google is worse about it than ever so i would be eager to try out anything else that was better. i really think google search was like one of my favorite things on a computer for like 17 years. i thought the good times would never end.

It doesn't seem to do this every time, but sometimes the results mostly ignore half my query, making it useless. Say I search "cat poster," there will be exactly ONE line of cat posters, then endless random posters of all kinds. I don't see how this is supposed to make me more likely to click and spend money. I see nothing I like in the 5 relevant products, the rest are irrelevant, I click out. Who is this benefiting

Tiny Timbs posted:Not really, the search has been pretty good. I don’t use the other stuff I've been using kagi for close to a year and agree. For what it's worth I hate AI bullshit and hype probably quite a bit more than most people since I work in the software consulting space, all my prospective clients right now are fomo small business sociopaths, and it makes me wish I had pursued a more dignified career in interpretive dance. That said, search and summary is a clear llm wheelhouse and I think is one area where the right amount with right amount of personal control can yield a net positive. If you type a question into search it will do a small LLM summary by default which are from the cheap models which have mixed degrees of usefulness. You can disable this if you don't like it. I also use the AI assistant which is the standard API integrations with the big LLMs and the claim is the stuff I type doesn't get used for training Where I don't like AI stuff is when it's shoehorned into places it doesn't belong, is used to replace other perfectly working features, I can't disable it because it can easily poo poo up the space, or is used to show me tepid garbage for someone else's agenda. What Microsoft has done with all of its products tick every one of those boxes and it makes me physically ill. I don't get those vibes from this product right now e.g. binary search terms work well enough and are documented. I *love* being able to just blanket exclude or downrank sites in my preferences. I love being able to summarize a huge page someone linked me when I don't have 10 minutes to sift through it. I love to copy/paste a transcript of a 30 minute youtube video and get the bullet points instead of watching it. I'd wish it had less integration with other engines, but at least I don't get sponsored results. I find the news search is not good. I don't like some of the decisions and ethos alignments of the owner, but I'm not such a purist it's repelled me given the alternatives and my needs. Speaking of which, all the gas stations near me have contactless payment on their pumps which works a million times better than the card reader because it skips them up-selling you on poo poo like, "Would you like a Super Shine car wash for $12? Y/N? Would you like to join our Fuel Rewards program? Y/N?" Conspicuously the contactless payment has stopped working on every pump at every station in recent months. wash bucket fucked around with this message at 14:49 on Aug 3, 2024 |

A rational company would force you to sit there watching ads until there was another car pulling up to the pump, thus ensuring it was always generating revenue with zero wasted downtime
