I think Windows 11 should keep shilling Xbox Live to my 70 year old parents, sure they've said no thanks the first 30 times you tried to force it on them but who knows maybe the the 31st time they'll think differently.

Oh, speaking of Apple, I set foot in one of their Apple stores for the first time in like 5 years and they layout is just silly now. There aren't any registers or a front counter or anything. Just a bunch of tables full of demo units. I guess you're just supposed to mill around and wait for one of the employees to get done showing Dad how to use his phone? Made it kind of awkward to figure out who had been there waiting longer. I can already hear the middle manager sales pitch about how that's supposed to work but in real life it's just frustrating for a customer walking into a busy store.

Weatherman posted:On the other hand, Apple managed to go from Classic Mac OS to OS X, and also to do three CPU-architecture changes. OS X was heavy on technologies they already had in hand, particularly BSD (open source) + Mach kernel (from academia) + NeXTSTEP (operating system acquired from failed startup founded by Jobs), so it's not fair to call that a complete rewrite. The open stuff is particularly important because you had an existing base of excellent and proven UNIX software, utilities, and philosophy and didn't have to do stuff like port drivers to a completely unknown universe. The Mac universe was also small/dying so it also had much less inertia. They had no place to go but up. Microsoft has had a habit of doing everything in-house under heavy secrecy to enable their strategy of lock-in. The stuff they acquire is always "embrace, extend, extinguish" (Skype being the latest victim). .NET has been their best effort into the openness arena, but they still gently caress with the spirit of that when they have friction (GUI libraries are still closed, rewriting open source projects themselves to own the base, edging in other closed features). It's hard for me to envision them doing something similar since porting the existing ecosystem and the impact it would have would be disastrous unless they embraced common standards (lol) DemihumanResources fucked around with this message at 11:43 on Apr 23, 2025 |

I changed --ytd-rich-grid-items-per-row: 5 !important; to --ytd-rich-grid-items-per-row: 4 !important; and then i changed rid-template-columns: repeat(5, minmax(0, 1fr)) !important; to rid-template-columns: repeat(4, minmax(0, 1fr)) !important; and now it's cool. this is my life now. SUPPOSEDLY there is a way to do it in a plugin called enhancer for youtube, which i also have installed and have running anyways but I couldn't figure it out. here is a screen shot ![]() by default the 4 is a 5. but you can change it to 10 if you wan't i guess. edit: before ![]() after ![]() edit 2: it's a pretty small script so if someone can tell me a better way to optimize it that would be sweet. i have no idea what i'm doing but i got it from 5 videos per row (too small) to 4 (just right.) i'm just not sure I did it right. Speaking from my own experience, I've had new directors who came in and told my manager 'Your team is now called XYZ'. Why? Oh, because it relates the purpose of the blah blah blah whatever. Changing the names of all your teams is a super easy, very visible way to show you're making decisions, so you do it. It must be something that's taught in MBA courses.

That sucks. I've used Discord for almost ten years now and really like it. Only lovely thing that's going on with it right now is they show you what's basically an ad on the bottom of your server list. It's pretty easy to make it go away at least. I'm paying you fuckers for Nitro, I should be able to opt out of them (it would be understandable but still lovely if they only did it to users who weren't Nitro subscribers).

It is easy to fix youtube as long as you're not the sort of addict who has to stay signed in for eternity and knows how to use the browser bookmark function to create handy shortcuts to your creators of choice. Install uBlock Origin and add these filters: code:![]() A poo poo-free search results page: ![]() And a poo poo-free video player page: ![]() with nary a clickbait suggestion or :-O face to be seen (unless searching for those is your thing).

This is a really sad story about a man who needed help on a plane and didn't get it and then loving died. https://www.yahoo.com/news/american-airlines-flight-attendants-let-195049251.html But here's a part that really stuck out to me quote:“Next thing he knows, EMS pulls up and they’re pulling John off,” he told The Independent. “It was business as usual until they could get all the passengers away, and then, all of a sudden, it became an emergency… It seems like it’s become a persistent issue, where these flight crews are ‘event averse.’ Like, if you downplay things and attempt to sweep them under the rug, that’s the go-to play these days.” Everyone, everywhere, in America, in all situations, seems to have become more 'event averse'. Except, of course, for the people who are the root cause of this phenomenon. There seems to be a whole class of people who are ready to snap at a moment's notice, and everyone around them is too tired or underpaid or full of anxiety to deal with that. And with everything being constantly recorded there are too many opportunities for tough talk to be taken out of context. Also the entire substrate of the economy is customer satisfaction surveys. I believe this leads to an endless avoidance of any kind of conflict whenever possible. Which leads to bad things! Sometimes there needs to be conflict and sometimes you cannot speak politely. This sentiment is not an endorsement of police putting people's faces on concrete or some Karen screeching at a customer service rep. Sometimes there has to be a firm but polite enforcement of rules or norms. Or, sorry, you can't get off the plane right this second, this guy is having a heart attack. I moved to a house in the city a few years back, and decided to by my dog a GPS collar. We had been in a more rural place and a 4 year old leaving the door open meant I’d just have to go get him instead of risking him getting splattered in a 40mph zone with no sidewalks. Literally the first time I left the house it told me “Dog is out of the house!”. Sped home to find him asleep on the couch. It started happening like three times a day so I just never used it again. As an added lovely bonus, it was like $5 a month and it wouldn’t let me cancel it online or by phone (no idea how I was actually supposed to do it) so I literally shut down my PayPal account to stop the charges. Still don’t have a PayPal account 4 years later.

Here's something annoying. When you go to the playlists page of a youtube channel there are two ways you can sort them: in the order they were created (newest at the top) or in order of how recently they have had videos added to them (most recently at the top.) The latter is more useful because a lot of channels tend to have a few useful older playlists for their most popular and long-running series and then many newer, shorter playlists for shorter series. Unfortunately youtube defaults to the "newest playlist first" sorting method. So fine, whatever, just change it, right? Well no, because whenever I try to do that via mobile web browser (which is almost always how I access youtube) it takes me to a "something went wrong" error page. It just doesn't work. This has been the case for like two or three years now, they just broke this functionality at some point and never fixed it.
