I still need to get up the motivation to clean up my youtube subscriptions, there's just way too much cluttering it up that I've idly subscribed to over the years, so it's annoying in a different way than the main feed.

To contribute to wtf YouTube chat I only use it as a vehicle for Taskmaster but broke my routine to look up a song the other day (DOA cover of Eve of Destruction) and the recommended viewing suggestions at the bottom of the page were insane - Best On Camera Animal Attacks and other faces of death type poo poo where even the thumbnails were disturbing. I get that I was looking up an apparently outré ancient punk cover but this seems like stuff even a half assed AI mod should be clearing out? Blah blah blah think of the children and all that…

There are a few decent little time killer phone games that don't have ads and crap baked in. I don't mind their version of Wordle.

Yeah but what real-world artists are putting up videos of giant motorcycles

The guy is a prime customer for giant motorcycle content and the generative AI guys were the first to market

Sucks but the giant motorcycle artists are to blame here

Microsoft’s ICC blockade: digital dependence comes at a cost

quote:

In February, the United States imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. As a result, Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan has no access to the emails on his Microsoft account. The incident once again demonstrates the risks of dependence on US IT services.

To make matters worse, Khan’s bank accounts have also been frozen, according to the Associated Press. If he takes a flight to the US, he will likely be arrested upon arrival. According to the Associated Press, the ICC has been paralyzed by the forced Microsoft blockade. The conflict between the ICC and the US arose in November, when the former issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This incident tells bystanders more than just how applicable it is to this specific situation. Anyone who does not want to follow the geopolitical stance of the US exactly must have a plan B when it comes to software.

Yeah, this is something I've been worried about since Trump took office. Hopefully this is a wakeup call for everyone. Use US services? Get hosed. Buy a US vehicle? maybe it doesn't work tomorrow. Say something mean about Trumpy Dump? Maybe you don't get to use the Swift banking system.

There's a few items that I wonder how a company actually makes money on it. Deodorant is one.

I caught some flack for this post the other day. I think a better example is light switches and electrical outlets. Home Depot currently has both at less than $1 a piece. You buy them when you first build or remodel a home, they have to work to safety standards that no techbro could conceive of, and they stay there for basically a whole generation's time. How does a company like that make money and how has no vulture capitalist decided to blow this whole thing up?

I don't think she likes the special sauce, Rick.

They make lots and lots of other things, and even then they cost less than a dollar to make.

If you're talking about Eaton, they don't make light switches and that's it. They make here just look at all this poo poo. They are, again, a multinational multi-billion dollar corporation with 85,000 employees worldwide.

These are all conglomerates operating on massive massive scales. Honeywell doesn't make its profits selling oscillating fans, they sell jet engines.

How many smart home companies have pulled a "we're not supporting that anymore, so we're intentionally bricking things" at this point? That's how vulture capitalists are blowing it up. Get ready to replace your light switches every five years for wifi compatibility.

The real trick will be when they start having things phone home for "safety," followed by the regulations requiring them.

Manager Hoyden
Mar 5, 2020

Light switches have no mechanism that is under patent and hundreds of thousands of tooling processes and molds already exist for them. Unless they get blown up all at once or banned or something, production will always be a cheap turnkey investment for anyone with the cash to invest

Chicago Sun-Times prints summer reading list full of fake books

On Sunday, the Chicago Sun-Times published an advertorial summer reading list containing at least 10 fake books attributed to real authors

The creator of the list, Marco Buscaglia, confirmed to 404 Media that he used AI to generate the content. "I do use AI for background at times but always check out the material first. This time, I did not and I can't believe I missed it because it's so obvious. No excuses," Buscaglia said. "On me 100 percent and I'm completely embarrassed."

Newspapers are complicated, but this is doubly poo poo because the Sun Times is a nonprofit, owned-by-our-NPR newspaper and also importantly not the crumbling Chicago Tribune.

I don't think he's a "book review guy" or likely has a job to keep or not keep. It sounds more like he's some freelancer who was asked to make filler for the advertorial supplement by some company that made it and probably only cared about the ad parts because that's the part they were getting paid for, and the newspapers that ran it didn't care because they didn't feel it was their responsibility.
