one of the worst things about the decline of the mascot platformer is, that the ones which do come out are usually just standard riffs on the Mario formula it was funny getting a klonoa collectible in astro bot though. imo if you're making a mascot platformer, you shouldn't remind people of a much better, more inventive mascot platformer in the middle of it

i guess it lacks the simple forward momentum and narrative structure of 1 but the more slow, quiet and meditative tone it gets out of that, with explicitly being a story where klonoa understands what role he's playing and how it's going to end, shifting him into more of a genuine leadership role as the guy who needs to help other people deal with their own issues, makes it a really cool progression over the first one. also the level design gets crazy
