downout posted:What's the "bfm thing"? Sorry I probably missed a few pages. Former goon "Bob From Marketing". He was one of the goons that would go to iceland for the annual EVE thing, where he was grooming a 15 or 16 year old kid. Got her to send him nude photos. Posted the nude photos on a goonfleet.com sub-forum. While his relationship with the girl may or may not have been illegal in Iceland, posting CSAM to an american message board was super illegal and the webmaster went spare when he found out about it. Which got BFM kicked from goonfleet, and I think got porn (or maybe just home grown?) banned from the forum as well. It was a pretty big deal. So when a "Bob From Marketing" showed up in another MMO goon guild years later some people thought it was just edgy goon humour to use the name of a known pedo, some people had never heard of the incident, and at least a few people in the guild were old friends from his EVE days who knew it was him but didn't think it was a problem that's he'd posted private photos of a teenager at some point in the past. When people who knew the whole story brought it up it took the new guild leadership a few days to respond (because, again, most non-EVE goons didn't know) and everything blew up. Turned out no one from EVE had ever bothered to report him here, or possibly it was ignored as "importing off-site drama", so his SA account was in good standing. A mature SA account in good standing was the minimum requirement to get into most goon guilds. When it blew up in the second MMO the story did make it back here and his SA account was permabanned.

I recall the first time a very baby goonfleet of maybe 20 people raided Syndicate, and we (Black Omega) ended up taking them under our wing, helping to turn it into the absolute eve destroying juggernaut it was. I maintain that this is one of the most hilarious things to ever happen in gaming. The old guard alliances, who we were mostly already at war with anyway after the breakdown of 5ive, absolutely hated that poo poo. Also I'm still irl friends with Suas/Kia Tolon and he's eve free and doing good.

I got to experience a Suas guitar serenade live and that was the most worthwhile thing I got out of my GF stint. left very soon after digi attempted to out someone as gay because of stupid internet drama.

I'm probably remembering things incorrectly but as my time with GF was winding down because I couldn't stand the sounds of DBRBs voice anymore, i co lead a highly successful drunken gimmick ship raid with bfm (we all died). At the tail end bfm started sharing some pictures on jabber of this girl he was seeing. I remember thinking that she looked awfully young and then like 2 days later he was booted and I was absolutely disgusted with being involved. So I quit and never logged in again.

I was gonna ask who was that fleet commander that was angrily fall-down drunk for every operation he led but then I realized that was most of them. I think Tolon is the specific one I'm thinking of and he's gotta be six feet under by now perfectly preserved to this day by a supernatural blood alcohol concentration that makes embalming fluid look like Gatorade.

As mentioned earlier, I know Tolon/Suas irl and he is both sober and eve free, amazingly. Definitely who you're thinking of though.

I am morbidly curious if any goonfleet types ever read the book that someone wrote about the Eve wars, which apparently has spawned a second volume: https://www.empiresofeve.com/ I wasn't in goonfleet and tried Eve only for a month or so a year ago, but I love reading about SA stuff and culture taking up residence elsewhere online. I would pay good money for more books of war stories or oral history of goonfleet and related side projects.

I think the era of big mythic stories is probably over.

I used to play a glorified spreadsheet based browser game called Astro Empires with goons. Eve without the graphics, all the drama. We had hundreds of goons playing across multiple servers about 20 years ago.

https://www.wired.com/2008/01/mf-goons/ I found this Wired article back when Google still worked looking up darker stuff about MUD, Warcraft, Second Life harassment it's just a prank, bro some truly grim quotes by Lowtax within I wonder how those three EVE goons are doing?

wizard2 posted:https://www.wired.com/2008/01/mf-goons/ This being a time capsule to a different age is fun but it also sounds like it was written by an alien. It also seems to make the common mistake of thinking that a "$10,000 spaceship" means that the owner actually paid ten grand directly to make it, which isn't how that works. Griefing people's stuff is lame, especially when it's their own space that they created for their own enjoyment. That said, it's almost quaint to hear about people griefing digital slumlords and presidential candidates rather than what happens today, ie finding some random powerless person and making their lives hell 24/7 until they commit suicide.

I read Wired Magazine for years. my dad would get used copied from his CAD team after they were finished laughing at it. even in 2008, they still had a really corny oh golly gee wiz Web 1.0 tone, similar to those books that would describe 100 webpages you could visit on the World Wide Web.

the main things i remember from eve are this dude trying to use an industrial ship to mine and getting fried loving poo poo up in a destroyer / cruiser trying to figure out how to set up planetside bases poaching rare farts and turds from someone's wormhole someone tried to use goonfleets rep to autopilot a freighter and got blown up so i stole all the loot it was ok but not really that amazing in retrospect sexual criminals like scifi and weird authority complexes or something which makes it all dramatically worse
