Everyone at the funeral is of a class that will benefit from a trump presidency, no? Insert George Carlin "it's all a club and you ain't in it" clip here.

If Biden/the democrats really thought, like REALLY thought that trump was an existential threat to american democracy that should have been worth risking everything for, even if it required radical steps that might permanently alter what our grand bargain of a governance is.

Career dems politicians are so used to drinking with their enemies in private and calling them fucks publicly that it is impossible for them to conceive that sometimes the other guy isn't just an empty suit parroting talking points for fundraising and is actually going to try to do bad things to people.

But also people with those careers never see the consequences of their actions in the way the working class does.

To them Trump and co are not a threat to anything related to their lifestyle.

Good point. Had hoped Obama might be a new Carter post presidency & make a sincere effort to help people. “There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community,” the Supreme Court’s opinion said. “But Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikTok’s data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary.”

A key bit is that Donnie can only do so much about it with selective unenforcement:

quote:

Under the terms of the law, third-party internet service providers like Apple and Google will be penalized for supporting a ByteDance-owned TikTok after the Jan. 19 deadline.

So we'll see if ByteDance sells and/or lots of people start getting social media detoxification shakes.

The damage that objective PII and such that the OPM breach contains is pretty well quantified and understood. We have protections in place, weak as they may be, against people impersonating you or stealing your bank account.

The personal details of who you follow, what sort of videos you watch, your music tastes, who you PM, the contents of your PMs, who you send videos and memes too (This tracks even if you don't send it through the app itself fyi, that's what the little ? code at the end of stuff like youtube links helps with) - those details build up a very very invasive graph of "public" info that is suddenly dangerous when its ingested into a big data archive with everyone elses - and I think any of us can sort of understand the edges of that risk assessment in a way that people who aren't posting on a dead gay comedy forum don't ever consider.

I'd guess it's because letting future Chinese social media companies bear the financial risks of developing the next big thing is great for America's tech sector if they can force a sale or ban them after developing an identical product.

I think Weigel has this right in that it's not a loser anymore:

quote:

The Laken Riley Act passed when the results from Cameron County rolled in. If you can run against "migrant crime" and win south Texas Latinos, you have destroyed the left's immigrant rights coalition.

When the voters who moved right on this hear "immigrants," they don't think of farm laborers. They think of the people filling shelters in NY and Boston - which Dems are also going to restrict now.

Voters said "get the migrants outta here."

I'm betting this ages like the Iraq War vote - well we didn't know the racist administration would be THAT racist about enforcement of what we voted for!!!

TikTok is popular and the banning bill was entirely about TikTok alone, basically. Doesn't matter that RedNote or whatever has the same setup - the bill was about TikTok because TikTok is popular.

Lol yeah & not owned by meta. The framing of it as being in the national interest when it’s purely about numbers feels like when my state was voting on privatizing liquor sales. Ads against it showed concerned looking firefighters worried about kids, but spending was 100% on one side retail stores wanting more business, and the other side was beer companies as liquor in grocery stores dings their sales.
