The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season began on 6/1 and ends on 11/30. Apologies for the late start to this year's thread. It was a stupid rear end in a top hat of a season. People in western North Carolina, hundreds of miles inland from the coast and 2000+ ft above sea level are still rebuilding from Hurricane Helene. Hurricane Beryl, the earliest cat 5 ever, resulted in 68 confirmed tornadoes. Hurricane Milton reached 895 mbar, which tied the strongest hurricane ever in the Gulf of Mexico. 2025's thread is brought to you by: Passerby nurses saving people https://x.com/wdsu/status/1834049849978712514 People who probably call it the Gulf of America https://x.com/UjwalVelagapudi/status/1839355962223947991 This guy's living room https://x.com/ImMeme0/status/1839499347475546311 This poo poo all the way up in TN https://x.com/ReedTimmerUSA/status/1840090638718579055 Our dorky rear end country https://x.com/GeorgeSolis/status/1840133433936224758 The guy in Reed Timmer's car ![]() ![]() Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh https://x.com/spann/status/1844179394962784563

Dumb question: how much of what痴 happening in central Texas is related to a tropical weather system? If sort of reminded me of the hurricane that hit Houston, in that a major tropical pattern formed and justdidn稚 go anywhere. I mean I grew up there and we got flooding occasionally, but Jesus. Nothing like that.

I went camping at South Mountains State Park in NC back in July, and the devastation from Helene was incredible. It's going to be years before it's cleared up, so many trees went down. I saw a concrete and steel pedestrian bridge that was hit by debris so hard it was shifted almost 3 feet in the center. It was my little gem, my refuge from the real world, and I'm thankful the family campground is still open. gently caress hurricanes.

I'm actually somewhat surprised that Trump has not totally shut down the Hurricane Center, just so it looks like no hurricanes will threaten our country.

Possibly dumb question from someone who lives far away from where hurricanes are (at least so far) a thing: it looks like Erin peaked at Category 5, but has since weakened to Category 2. What's the expected progression from here? Is it expected to weaken more before hitting the US coast, or to go up in strength again?

Well it's not actually expected to hit the US coast, and as it's headed North to cold waters most likely just going to continue to weaken. Although there is one tracking model that has it turning back around like it forgot its keys or something

We've got two tropical cyclones out there in the Atlantic, one of which might come onshore in the southeastern US next week. Further to the east, and currently less threatening to the US coast, is Hurricane Humberto. Models don't have this one coming on, or very near, the coast. But it does have some chance of influencing the path of the second storm. Potential Tropical Cycle Nine, formerly known as Invest 94L (and soon to be Imelda), is the one to watch. It is moving past Hispaniola and Cuba now, still disorganized, on its way north-northwest. It should be approaching near southeastern coast early next week. And then ...? Well, its very uncertain due to other influencing factors. The experimental cone from the NHC, which just tries to locate the center of the storm, gets huge because they aren't sure where it's going to go. Depending on how fast it can get north, it may or may not come onshore. If you live along the southeastern US, especially eastern Georgia, SC, and NC, you could at least be in for multiple days of heavy tropical rain. Imelda slow as hell and is gonna turn right well before it gets to 30 degrees north latitude. Hampton Flinch fucked around with this message at 12:12 on Sep 29, 2025 |
