As a white British person of no religious classification, I visited Auschwitz Birkenau last Tuesday to pay my respects to the people killed by fascists. That would be the REAL fascists. The ones who could stand in front of children and happily send them off to death. Not the pretendy fascists/bigots/racists who are the "meat on the bone" for subjective discourse that do not exist, to the many, who regularly post to these threads. I post to say, visit and consider. Pay your respects and tell everyone you have been, done this and push anyone who can, to do the same. I did have a question. You know how yesterday we had a discussion on education? I was wondering what everyone thinks of University education as a thing? I have never been particularly good at it, but I wonder how many people enjoyed it and think it doesn't need to be altered fundamentally and those who would prefer it done a different way. Personally I think one of the big things is that Lecturers are not there as teachers, they are there to do research and to occasionally do a class.

I love the teaching side of the job and without it I would have left for something else a long time ago. There are plenty of excellent lecturers who take their teaching very seriously, and also plenty who fit your description exactly and concentrate on their research to the exclusion of all else, supplying prestige and little else. They are sometimes quite good one to one in tutorials but quite honestly their students are better off if someone else gives their lectures - postdocs standing in is not unusual.
