Honestly, I have a couple of those homemade art recreations on hand and don't really want them broadcast on FB or Twitter. An Ali review might be the perfect place for them. And I can't begrudge the guy including some sensible handwashing and distancing advice.

New knockoff lens arrived! Now for the rain to gently caress off so I can try some star photography:

It's specifically a knockoff of Canons 50mm f1.8 'Plastic Fantastic'

My mate has the update Canon made (the Nifty Fifty) so should be interesting how they compare (I do know mine hunts around a bit on AF but that could be my settings in Magic Lantern though)

Tip for y'all: an 18650 cell fits in there instead of the 3AAAs and you've got a rechargeable flashlight that stays charged for a very long time.
It's also brighter than when you use the AAAs

I grabbed a handful of these cells from an old laptop battery that was going in the bin.

Those 18650s are also used in e-cigs/vapes so those shops are a great place to buy them and accessories like chargers.

I got an Samsung 18650 from a local e-cig shop for the same torch but I needed to use the plastic case it came in as a spacer as the model I had was just the AAA one.

Thank you for this. I have been meaning to figure out what size battery fit this thing without the adaptor and now I have a 2 pack with a charger on the way from Amazon.

Oh yeah, you do need the spacer, but all it is is a bit of plastic tubing that fits round the battery to stop it rattling around (I nearly threw it out as it looked like packaging crap)
You could easily mock it up with a couple of rubber bands

Well the 3d printer I bought off aliexpress at the end of last year is misbehaving. Seems like the LCD doesn't work properly in certain conditions, this should show up as a white frame all around, instead the bottom half isn't working:

The good news is that they were offering a 12 month warranty when I bought it (but no longer as far as I can tell) so I'm gonna do an experiment and try to RMA it.

Still not dark so no Astro stuff yet (and I have to still do the calibration photos for the post processing).

But have something I ordered in the before-time (January) that arrived today:

Bonus Lepin Falcon in the BG

And my beer

I really like it. Auto-focus sucks as you can see above - the focal plane is VERY tight too. Mandos rifle is pointing at the camera and Mando is 45cm away (minimum focus).

For astro this will be cool with the f1.8. I'm cleaning up another Bahtinov Mask from the 3D printer especially for this. Do note, if you have any legit Canon filters for a 50mm, they WILL NOT WORK as the thread diametre is 52mm instead of 46mm (from memory?)

I have the real Canon nifty fifty and the focus wide open is VERY tricky. I also found the colour wasn't great compared to some other lenses. I managed to snag the 40mm STM from SA Mart for an absolute steal years ago and despite not being as fast, I found it a WAY better lens overall. Worth looking into down the line, I don't know if they've done a revision, I bought mine about a decade ago.

mobby_6kl

There are several versions of the nifty fifty, including an STM one.

I think this is the Mk1:

The Mk2 is what I have too:

and the STM even gets a metal mount again

The focus plane is very narrow at 1.8 especially up close of course, but while the autofocus is slow and noisy (just like manual focus, when you think about it), it seems pretty accurate. It's very sharp compared to any non-L lens I had too.

From what I've heard, the Yongnuo is decent enough but considering how cheap the Canon lenses are I'd just get one of these. E: here's a comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_kVliB8TW4

So on May 7th I bought a knockoff of this Indiegogo-funded printer.

Finally, a way to cover everything I own in lovely emojis. There's never been a way, before. This is the only way.

Today it got here and as you can imagine I was very excited.

Rather than skip straight to bemojing every garment I own, I decided to do some test printing on a piece of scrap paper to figure out the parameters.

Things are going well.
