This is the tragedy of these siblings - she's as important as, for example, Lady or Lord Montague in Romeo and Juliet. As to why she takes her in, having heard of the fate of her lover and seeing her daughter return, of course she'd do her utmost for her. The father hardly comes to the manor anyhow, so he wouldn't have much opportunity to learn her identity.
