 Chapter 41 – Interregnum (aka the Seventh Crusade, the Black Death, and the Reign of the Five Emperors) – 1310 to 1320 In the ruined halls of the Apostolic Palace, in the reclaimed lands of Roma, deep into the year of our Lord 1310, the Pope calls for the Seventh Crusade.  And in the House of Groves, over a thousand miles away in holy Jerusalem, the Emperor and Defender of Christendom stands ready to answer those calls. Whilst the meek and timid wasted moneys on hospitals and plague masks, the Ogre of Blaiddyd raised a mighty force between the banks of the Euphrates and Tigris.  And just a year later, he led that army eastward and a-crusading… But from the 25,000 that marched into Persia, scarcely 8000 reached Sistan a few weeks later.  How? Why?  Because they faced a beast that even a hundred thousand knights, levies, and God-blessed nobles could not defeat. On the road to the crusade, they crossed paths with Plague.  Records start becoming murkier around this time, but amongst the thousands that were overwhelmed with chills and buboes and slung into the mass graves of Sistan… the Emperor of Jerusalem was lost.  And that was just the beginning.                   This was a plague unlike any in living memory, a plague that wreaked havoc on earth, a plague that claimed highborn and low without care for blood or wealth or piety… For the first time since Godefroy God-chosen marched into the holy city, Jerusalem was well and truly defeated. There are few accounts that survive those blasted days, and they only tell us that every lord was a tyrant in his castle, that mass burnings and witch hunts were commonplace, that peasants rampaged and rioted all across the realm.       And in the space of ten years, four – four – high lords proclaimed themselves Emperors, but the moment they departed their holdfasts to secure Jerusalem itself… well, death was always waiting.     Unsurprisingly, the Seventh Crusade was a complete and utter failure. The few that somehow survived the first foray into Sistan were quickly crushed by local forces, who seemed almost unaffected by the Black Death.  And from his distant halls, the Pope finally called the doomed venture off in the summer of 1222, over a decade after his crusading bull.  The days became weeks and weeks became years, and with everyone who was anyone shut in their castles, chaos reigned.  …  …   ...  Until finally, at some point… the wave receded. The black, ugly pustules became rarer and rarer, the plague masks were forgoed, and those damned peasants began multiplying again. God finally answered our prayers.  Unfortunately, the vast majority of high lords were dead, and in those places where Jerusalem still held sway, babes practically at the cradle were the scions of their ancient dynasties, lords of many peoples and rulers of vast realms… And thus, the first Boy-Emperor is elected to Jerusalem.  Coinciding with the election in Jerusalem, as this story slowly stumbles into its final chapter, new forces are about to be unleashed on the world...

The Thermidors return to the podium after reading thoroughly through the Blood charter, particularly the part about the Crips. Ok so the Bloods seem a lot more dangerous than we though. Our fault for forgetting who stabby was after all of these years. Setting that aside, we will instead be starting a new party, The Sensible Soldiers Society. Too many times have we thrown our troops away to die in some far off war with little, and sometimes no, benefits to our realm. These have lead to loss of lives, and even sometimes loss of land. Even now we face a large revolt! We must more carefully look at how we fight, as well as the who and why. our tenets: 1. Fight wars in a sensible manner, taking realm stability into account. 2. Determine wether a war is worth it, taking the state of the world and ourselves into account. 3. Be prepared for wars both offensive and defensive. When oppurtunity strikes and we are able to capitalize on in we shall, and if the time is not right, we shant. 4. Keep the realm stable, and build up defenses and infastructure that would make our warring efforts easier. 5. Make great flags, Weapons, Armor for any and all who want them. If we do not look good while doing it what is even the point?
