Any UK Goon in their mid forties/early fifties will no doubt remember kids shows from their childhood such as Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine and The Clangers. There is a wonderful documentary being rebroadcast on iPlayer just now. It's a Timeshift film from a few years back about Oliver Postgate who made them, as well as loads of other great stuff. It avoids much of the cliches and crap that this could have had in other less sensitive hands.
I strongly recommend a watch, it's fascinating. It maybe also explains my lifelong left wing socialist views. It's mindbogglingly how much Postage's politics are woven through them all. There's zero chance it'd fly nowadays, but I'm glad it maybe subliminally helped my generation become loony lefties.

Timeshift series 9 6 Oliver Postgate - A Life In Small Films

quote:

Once upon a time, not so long ago, there was a man whose name was Oliver Postgate. He had a shed where he made things.

With his friend Peter Firmin, Oliver created entire worlds for characters including Bagpuss, The Clangers and Ivor the Engine. These stories fired the imaginations of generations of children, and his lullaby voice became a universal reminder of childhood.

Time Shift celebrates Oliver Postgate's life and work through a treasury of clips from well-known and rarely seen films, alongside film and photos from the family archive. Fans including Lauren Child (Charlie and Lola) and Andrew Davenport (In the Night Garden) are on hand to heap praise on the man who is such an inspiration for their work.

Postgate's family help delve deep into his history and discover the inventions, such as Oliver's old camera adapted with Meccano, that powered his imagined worlds. Co-creator Firmin reveals the story behind his most celebrated characters and introduces his daughter Emily, familiar to millions as the owner of Bagpuss.

The documentary also reveals how, as the grandson of Labour leader George Lansbury, Postgate's life was shaped by radical politics. His deeply held beliefs influenced his classic creations, and campaigning became his focus until his death in December 2008.

Chalalala~
This is presumably the documentary in question, which appears to be available in full on YouTube. I've watched the first 10 minutes and it seems legit at least. It's only in 480p quality, but other than that is fine. Which is good for people outside the UK like me who don't have access to iPlayer. I think The Clangers is the only one of his oeuvre that I'm familiar with, but I'm also maybe just a bit too young to have been in the right age group to see a lot of it at 38. I know of several others, and I think my eldest sister was a fan of Bagpuss growing up, but I only ever saw The Clangers on television growing up the odd time. It wasn't even something I was particularly devoted to, but I definitely recognize them and remember some of the moments from episodes that I saw here and there.

Dlist celebrity replaced by another vacant face on the conveyor belt of vaguely recognisable churn used to pad out these types of light entertainment shows.

You could probably hang a wet cloth off a broom stick instead of using them and the audience would still watch the shows.

Yeah, same - part way through the third episode I thought it was going to be 6 parter and I'd jumped on it too soon, and would have to watch the rest unfold weekly instead of binge-watching.

Forty minutes later, it was all over.

Grim watch, good script, great performances. Standard McGovern offering.

I worked on that show! Really tough to make during covid (shot from October to December last year) and we were holed up in Shrewsbury when the second lockdown came into effect.

Wake up, film at the prison, £3 tesco meal deal for dinner in the hotel room you can barely leave, rinse, repeat.

Really gratifying to see it being recieved so well.

The show nearly went down in the first week due to a covid scare, I think the director spoke about it in an interview. 5 days into the shoot a bunch of cast (including SB) had to self isolate after an extra tested positive. Nearly took the whole production down before we reconfigured and shot a ton of Stephen Graham's story ahead of schedule. By the end of the isolation they had to do we were really running out of stuff to film.

Ah that's really interesting! You did an awesome job; it kept me entertained. I only meant to watch one, and suddenly I'd watched all three (and I am not much of a binge watcher).

Graham is one of those actors where I'll go out of my way to watch anything he's in.

Speaking of McGovern, I watched Cracker a few years back, and I keep meaning to watch The Street, which I remember rating highly.

I hope they at least sprang for a decent hotel, or was it the lovely Premier Inn down the road a bit from the prison?

Shrewsbury's my home town (don't live there any more though) and I can't tell if it was weird that I somehow recognised the prison when I was watching Time - I've never been inside the outer walls of Shrewsbury Prison either.

Perhaps all prisons literally look the same.

Such a weird show. 50 minutes of 'here's 2 VR homes, choose one!' and then 5 minutes of 'so this is what that looks like in real life, with parts changed because you either didn't like them, or didn't have the budget, or the builders said it wasn't possible'. If this was the 90s I think the production company would pay for the refurb and you'd have to just like or lump the results.

There was a show on Channel 4 just before christmas with Damon from Brookie buying a home for 2 strangers, so they could refurbish it and then sell it on at a profit, with the goal being to get enough from it to be the deposit on their own home. Only twice over 20 (or 25) episodes did someone manage to make enough money for a small deposit. Normally 2 people would work all their free time over 6 months and then get £3000 out of it. It won a TV BAFTA the other day.
