korean ramen is for real pretty badass and in many cases surprisingly distinct from japanese ramen so its definitely something worth looting the grocery store for on your way out of the country

i always try to remind people briefly in korea that the free maglev train at incheon airport will take you straight to an emart thats right next to the casino in maybe five minutes its an extremely convenient final pit stop provided youre leaving from terminal one anyway

the most obnoxiously derivative aspect of the sonic the hedgehog movie is that his powers work exactly like the flash from justice league which is an extremely specific thing to rip off given that the complex motions during frozen time and the electric shockwaves dont really factor into depictions of other pop culture speedsters especially not sonic himself and theres a lot of reference material to work from in that regard

what makes this really annoying is that by defining sonics powers in such a way in a setting thats otherwise just the real world the movie effectively makes it impossible for robotnik or anyone else to pose a credible threat to him so robotniks master plan is to just steal sonics powers which was incredibly dumb and lazy even by the screenplays already low standards

in a related digression i saw the trailer for the latest scooby doo reboot and gritted my teeth a little through the beginning of it when they parody a style of movie trailers that i dont think anyone has done sincerely for maybe a decade or two

although the real insult was seeing the call of the wild trailer later on and how the hell does scooby doo look better than something that is ostensibly a real dog that harrison ford is supposed to be talking to

The only question the Sonic movie needs to answer is if Jim Carrey is actually entertaining in it

Some Guy TT

hes legitimately the best part of the movie because hes the only actor who sells his punchlines with actual proper comic delivery instead of expecting us to laugh because he referenced some dumb thing from another movie

its actually kind of weird come to think of it because all the non jim carrey bits are so loaded up with random gratuitous pop culture references im wondering if he just adlibbed actual jokes instead of reading the script

it occurred to me reading this piece that theres a bit of a pop culture disconnect at this point because we all dont have access to the same shows like im just taking everybodys impressions of shows like the mandalorian and the new star treks at face value because i have zero interest in the services that offer them nor do they sound like the kind of thing id bother trying to pirate

my own family on my latest trip back to the united states has been emblematic of this i was shocked to learn that everyone has amazon prime right now because i figured netflix was good enough but i hadnt even considered how weird it is that my dad doesnt care about new star trek and my sister in law doesnt care about disney plus mainly because they cant be arsed to get new services when they already have plenty

Yeah this is very true, the pop culture landscape is fragmenting even more these days as we all end up with different streaming services as well, like i don't have disney+ or the dumb cbs one so like you I'm just absorbing stuff about the mandalorian and the new star treks (except discovery which I watched on Netflix while abroad) through osmosis from the like 10% of pop culture consumers who have access to those things

its also funny though because there's just. so. much. content. from all these sources that there isn't actually a need to get every single one of them unless you're obsessed with having access to every single thing

like my household has access to netflix, prime, and hbo, and that's it and honestly we could probably drop hbo and barely notice--and yet i dont feel the need to get anything else because there's always something to watch on one of those three services

imo this is why new companies are working particularly hard to try and turn their exclusives into must-see tv that dominates pop culture discussion, like having mandalorian memes everywhere and trying to get everyone talking about new star trek, because they know that otherwise those things will just come and go and people will forget about them as they keep watching stuff on the services they already rent access to. they're trying to make it so if you dont see the mandalorian you're somehow behind in the pop culture race so you have to get disney+ to not miss out, because otherwise people will just happily keep watching whatever is on the services they already own instead of signing up to new stuff and making new accounts and passwords and having new things to have to remember to change when you get a new credit card and then facing even more decision fatigue when you sit down to watch something and before you even get into an app you have to decide which of six apps you want to open before endlessly scrolling through a list of things to watch and then closing the app because you couldn't decide on anything

i watched all the david tennant doctor who years ago and then stopped partway through the matt smith years because the guy who took over just sucked and is a terrible writer (hbomberguy did a whole like 90-minute video on his other hit garbage show, sherlock, that explores just how bad that guy is) and i think i remember multiple episodes about like class conflict and freeing the enslaved, but always wrapped up in a deeply camp exterior where it's one group of aliens oppressing another group of aliens so you can see the parallels if you want to but if you want to ignore them the way tons of people ignored the ham-handed civil rights metaphors in original star trek, you totally can

I was the 90s kid that didn't get cable until the new millennium, and I remember being quite annoyed when the center of gravity of weekday kids programming shifted from Fox/WB/DisneyAfternoon to cable.

Talk of a fragmented television medium brought back memories of that.
