Drone_Fragger posted:Am I missing something here too, why’d they bury all those explosives in the first place? Is it like an old army base or something? Million of tons of bombs/artillery dropped * dud rate = a lot of old bombs kicking around. And the dud rate was not some low number like 0.1% either. Then they just get buried over time (or buried themselves when they landed) until some bastard hits it with a plow or a shovel.

CADPAT posted:Million of tons of bombs/artillery dropped * dud rate = a lot of old bombs kicking around. There is a story in my husband's family. One of his grandfathers was a police officer and a member of the Home Guard in England during WWII, and one of his jobs was to track down Unexploded bombs. So, he'd go out on his bike and count the craters after a bombing campaign because they fell in sets of 8. So, he could count a set of craters and then they'd be able to pinpoint the area where a UXB was by the missing crater. One day, he found a line of 7, so they knew there was a missing bomb either at the beginning or the end of the line, but the UXB crews could not find it. Well, a couple days later, a farmer came in to report that someone stole his horse. You see, he had kept it on an island in the middle of a shallow river overnight because the horse never wandered off the island. When he went out to collect the horse, it was gone... And, in fact, so was the island. When they looked at a map, the river was right on the tag end of the strip of 7 with the missing bomb. They knew they didn't have to look for the bomb anymore.

I went out to collect it from the island, and it's gone!" Police -- "The horse is gone?" Farmer -- "The island is gone!" Gotta love the British.
