Ghetto symphony has a great gunplay verse too

PONEYBOY
Jul 31, 2013

That Gunplay verse is one of my favourites but the ferg verse afterwards kills the song imo. Back when the album came out i edited the .mp3 to end after gunplay so I didn’t have to skip the rest of the song each time

Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!

Honestly, looking back at all this decade end stuff just reminds me of all the dudes I thought would be big and/or produce a bunch of good music and just...didn't. Gunplay and Ferg were mentioned (although Gunplay had a couple decent projects recently but nothing like how he came out). Spaceghostpurrp and Metro Zu and Main Attrakionz really should've got more notice for how much their sounds got ripped off but they all just kinda tailed off quick. Ab-Soul I thought would've at least been mentioned along the likes of Schoolboy Q but each album was just worse than the last. Krit wuz here was mentioned (and tbh in hindsight that would make my decade list, probably over Impossible Kid) but he never hit that same level, and even his production just fell off. I know I'll probably get some pushback on this one but Earl really disappointed me a lot-Earl was a great album, Doris was a snoozer, I don't like poo poo was a good album but still felt like kinda a waste, and some rap songs was again decent, but a lot of the folks he works with just seem to do the same thing better. I also expected a lot more out of the Beast Coast dudes but outside of Flatbush Zombies they didn't seem to really do much (Joey Badass had a good initial album, but somehow Roc Marciano and Ka who are like double his age were able to make more original and newer-sounding NY rap, and Underachievers may as well retire because Black Balloons Reprise is their whole aesthetic only perfected and done better than they ever could).

I still go back to 1999 pretty regularly (it was in my top-10 of the decade for listens) and I am with you in being a bit disappointed that he never seemed to top that project. I did really enjoy Roc Marci's recent project with DJ Muggs so I should probably dive into his new album and other recent stuff. It seems like there are still a decent amount of older artists still putting out quality work.

also his remix of trap queen "i ball out / no fetti wap" is probably my favourite line of the decade and definitely top three.

ok, here's a question, what's your top 10 songs of the decade?

Young Thug feat. Ferg and Freddie Gibbs - Old English
Young Thug - The Blanguage
Freddie Gibbs - Thuggin
Future - March Madness
2 Chainz feat. Pharrell - Feds Watching
Pusha T - If You Know You Know
A$AP Ferg feat. French Montana, Trinidad James, Schoolboy Q, and A$AP Rocky - Work (Remix)
Stormzy - Shut Up
Azealia Banks - 212
Lupe Fiasco - Mural

This was hastily constructed. There's an absolute ton I'm not remembering but thought it would be fun anyway.

Could easily post 100 more. Hip hop was the defining music of the 2010s. We'd shaken off the last bit of 2000s indie rock by the end of the 00s and as soon as the 10s hit, everyone and their dog wanted hip hop features, no matter the genre. Pop, rock and country have all been influenced by hip hop. You even have hip hop influence in a lot of modern metal.
Can't wait to hear what the 2020s sound like (probably like LilB)

this decade has been amazing. my prediction is the 2010s will be looked back on as perhaps being a high water mark. i think mainstream hip hop will gradually dilute in quality as the early 20's pass by but some amazing talent will always be there, just outside of the mainstream. a sort of underground hip hop resurgence, as much as underground hip hop can exist nowadays.

also, i forgot to mention brainiac.

Yeah on trying to review the decade I was just overwhelmed, even the rappers we were talking about earlier as what-ifs have a really solid release or two. In part I think we’ve really seen an increased appreciation for production amongst fans and a willingness to experiment there. Madlib, Blue Sky Black Death, Clams Casino, Metro Boomin, Kenny Beats, obviously Kanye, & Young Gud come immediately to mind—just the quality of beats these past ten years has been obscene.

I love Charlie from Busted!
Something like this

Kendrick - Good Kid Maad City
Kanye - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Gibbs & Madlib - Pinata
Pusha - DAYTONA
Noname - Telefone
Joey Bada$$ - 1999
Black Milk - No Poison No Paradise
Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory
Quest - We got it from Here...
Thugger - Jeffery

Feel like that Black Milk release, in particular, kinda fell through the cracks a lil bit. Never see anyone talk about it. Which is a tragedy, it's incredible:

I like that Gibbs generally tries a different Hip Hop production aesthetic for each of his projects (well... most, piñata and bandana sound similar for obvious reasons).

But nothing he’s done has hit me the way BFK did. And that’s not a slight against his other stuff.
