Or maybe they realised anyone in the UK hearing 'circular road layout' immediately thinks of the M25 and starts sobbing.

Update 42: Ridiculous of Me

This HAS to happen tomorrow. We won’t get another chance like this for months, at the very least. You can’t always be on call.

I’ve seen the data, Rose. You SHOWED ME the data. Even if we weren’t managing its emergence, we’d have a few years before it popped out on its own. As it is, we have time before the outbreaks get unmanageable.

“Manageable” is a relative term, Leon. We’ve been lucky so far. I’m not confident you can always intercept every spontaneous manifestation.

And that’s why we’re hiring Gloria and Hop. We can split them up and cover the bulk of the region between the three of us.

That’s a stopgap solution and you know it, especially now that Hop will be attending university. I’m not sure you grasp the level of property damage we’ll have to deal with before we get our next chance.

Look, when I tell you the three of us can handle it, I’m not speaking out of arrogance here. I know my capabilities and I know theirs, and we both know how well the models predict emergences.

… Should we be eavesdropping?

Maybe?

Every passing day introduces more complications we can’t afford. It must be tomorrow.

Unless it jumps out and eats Hammerlocke Castle, I’m going to spend tomorrow at the Finals. Are you really confident you can handle the DDE on your own? Or are you going to cancel the tournament in a shower of bad publicity?

I was a finalist too. I know how to handle it, I know how to operate the sensory suppression equipment, and I know its capabilities as well as anyone alive, except maybe Magnolia. Don’t force my hand, Leon.

Are you really wagering the fate of Galar on whether I’ll play along with this harebrained scheme of yours?

The more emergence events we deal with, the more we risk those lights going out. I’m willing to give you some leeway in making this decision – I can see your points. But every second that passes just introduces more risk!

It’s going to have to wait another day.
I give my word I’ll help you with your plans... just as soon as tomorrow’s match is over.

You never showed when you were supposed to, so I got worried that something had happened...

We will continue this discussion after the Finals wrap up.

THANK you.
Let’s head back to the hotel, and we’ll all grab dinner together, yeah? It’s on me, so you can order whatever you fancy.

:syoon:

If you’ll excuse us, Chairman Rose... And I do hope you’ll watch tomorrow’s match. It’s sure to be one for the history books.

Of course. And best of luck to both of you.

Wyndon - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

Of course I haven’t! I –

MC Grunt: The Finals will be starting shortly. I’m here to escort you to the stadium.

(In the original script, Hop angrily confronts this Grunt only for her to apologize for her coworkers’ behavior, saying it was all basically Oleana’s fan club within the company and calls herself “one of the good ones”. Even though it was Hop and Gloria who stormed the loving tower. But that doesn’t apply in this narrative.)

At this point we get the chance to automatically head to the stadium, but I take the chance to do something else for a little while – namely, hit up the Wild Area one last time. I didn’t mention this at the time because I wasn’t aware of it when we first entered it: the Wild Area is based on the Lake District, a fertile but extremely mountainous area in northwestern England notable for its thriving tourism industry and association with 19th century poets. Neat! Anyway, while we still have Dynamax dens same as always, the Pokémon in them are wildly more difficult.

As you get further and further into the game, the Pokémon you run into in Dens grow appropriately more powerful. I believe I mentioned it before, but powerful Den Pokémon get access to those shields, each point of which absorbs an attack. The good news: your Dynamax moves take off two points of shielding and when the shield goes down, its defenses dropped precipitously. The bad news: as always, Dynamax only lasts three turns for you, they get to use to normal attacks in addition to their Max move once the shields go down, and they can throw up those shields multiple times that picture above is the second set in that fight; I’ve seen THREE before. While you can still find them for Berries, TRs, and experience candy, it can become a god-awful trial just to figure out how to take them down – and that’s if the AI Trainers you get saddled with can actually pull their weight. They usually don’t. Oh well! Yeah, whatever, I give up after a few failed attempts and a few modest successes.

Incidentally, this is the last moment of freedom you have before heading the endgame. While you’ll still have access to your Box and such, once you start the final sequence, you won’t be getting out until you’re through.

So let’s do that.

You’re gonna show everyone the greatest battle ever, mate, and set the world on fire! So get yourself all checked in!

What, having an attack of the nerves?

Well, yeah, but… Hop? Are you sure you’re not angry with me because I took the Championship from you?

I’m genuinely looking forward to going to school, Gloria.

Okay, that IS rather novel.

Honestly, I’m pretty nervous too. This is NOT where I saw my life going. But… I feel… Free, I guess? There’s a real weight off my shoulders. I think there’ll always be a part of me that wishes I was Champion, but it’s just a part of me rather than the overriding purpose it used to be. And it’s freeing – just a little bit terrifying, yeah, but… I get to make my own choices based on my beliefs instead of just trying to echo my brother. And Gloria? I think you can beat Lee.

Me too, honestly.

I’ll be cheering for you from the stands.

I feel that they could have used the elevator set up that the story sequence used for the mook battles before the Master's battles, which also wouldn't have made Dynamax access so one-sided. Also, the track used for the elevator ascent is one of my favs, and it's a shame that it isn't one of the BGM options for Battle Tower battles.

Oh, Rose. It's so obvious we're missing a chunk of story somewhere along the line that would explain why he's so convinced the energy situation needs to be sorted out NOW NOW NOW NOW. I really can't tell if he's maybe non-neurotypical and this is a real hyperfixation/anxiety thing that's a lot bigger for him than everyone else, or if there's been some change recently he's not telling anyone about that means the problem actually is a lot more serious than he's stated previously (possibly accidentally caused by his company), or if he's actually a villain in the sense that his ego demands he be the one to fix it and therefore he's triggering the problem early so he can Save The Day. And whichever explanation is the case I don't think it justifies why he wouldn't agree with Leon to wait literally one day, unless he figured that Leon was going to lose and the new champion might not listen.

Wow, that is certainly an improvement on Rose's plans and motivations. Well done. You've actually made a sensible conflict out of this and I'm really impressed.

This part of the game drove me nuts, because I really like the kind of plot it was hinting at (I'm a sucker for well-intentioned antagonists and stories where things go badly not because anyone intends it, but just through conflicts of interest and unintended consequences) but there didn't seem to be any way to make sense of what Rose thought he was doing. He never gave any explanation of why it had to be now or why it was so urgent when (by his own reckoning) there won't be any consequences for a millennium. (In a way it's kind of refreshing for someone to think a problem that far off is important, cough cough contrast climate policy cough cough, but even so the whole "no, I can't delay a single day" thing felt really forced and stupid.)

I really like the hints we got at what kind of character Chairman Rose was supposed to be, but they didn't actually bother writing enough of him for it to work. I'm glad you're remedying this.

NyoroEevee posted:

This actually isn't quite correct, once you get into higher tiers of the Battle Tower there are a handful of trainers who are given the ability to use it (possibly you only start seeing this after you've beaten Leon in the final tier?). But it's weird that not everyone does, and they have strangely underwhelming animations when using it (they don't get a ball throw animation, it just cuts in with a picture of their face and then the pokemon dynamaxes). I've seen it a handful of times at least.

Black Robe posted:

God, gently caress that thing. Bad enough he's trying to use defencive strategies with a mon that has an absolutely horrid defencive typing, most of the time all you really want from the NPCs is to help you knock out some shield segments and he just refuses to do that. Even the person with a goddamn Magikarp is more effective than him.

A note on the raid mechanics though: one of the reasons the NPCs suck so much is that their pokemon are all set to be at 70% of the level of the player's pokemon (meaning they cap out at level 70 when yours is level 100). This means they're always going to be pretty fragile and ineffective, and that if your pokemon is at a reasonable level to be on par with the boss, the NPCs are all going to be underlevelled garbage. The 5-star raid bosses are all level 60-70, and the only real strategy I found for beating them solo was "use a level 100 pokemon so the NPCs have a chance, pack a type advantage and hope you don't get anyone too awful".

Update 43: Just Too Much

Battle! (Bede) - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

No updated Finals theme here. Fine by me; it’s so over-the-top already I can’t imagine how you’d amp it up even further.

As befits a member of the Fairy Gym, Bede has completely retooled his team; while he does still have a couple of his original Pokémon, he only kept the ones that are Fairy-type. I mean, most of his team is also Psychic-type as well, since Psychic- and Fairy-types tend to show up together, but there you go. His Mawile is an easy out; one Pyro Ball and it’s down. Next up is his Gardevoir, as well as my secret weapon against his team:

Mr. Blobby is fast, powerful, and has a healthy type advantage. In his typical utterly terrifying way, he pulverizes both this Gardevoir and Bede’s Rapidash.

Morgan is looking a mite taller. As she’s his last Pokémon (only four Pokémon, Bede? For shame!)…

… He immediately Gigantamaxes her.

While the damage itself isn’t particularly notable (and the heal effect it has is miniscule), G-Max Smite inflicts Confusion on Mr. Blobby – and if you don’t remember from all the way back at Kage’s Gym, Confusion gives you a strong chance of injuring yourself instead of using your next move. In fact, that happens Mr. Blobby’s next turn, which Bede makes use of to drop a Full Restore on Morgan. I get very lucky with my next attack; while it doesn’t crit, it must have hit the top of its damage range, because it managed to OHKO Morgan and end the fight.

Bede’s team ended up being a bit of a dud, but G-Max Smite is loving terrifying. There are few better ways to lock down a Pokémon then with Confusion, and given just how little time Dynamax lasts, it can cost an opponent several valuable Max moves.

But no one on PokéEarth can stand before the might of Mr. Blobby.

… Gloria?

Yeah :smugdog:?

Wipe that smirk off your face, I need to tell you something.

:geno:

… Thank you.

… What?

I’m pretty miserable after you kicked my rear end in Stow-on-Side, right?
And then that strange old lady comes out of nowhere and drags me into a boot camp on Fairy-type Pokémon! Do you have any idea what I’ve been through?! Covered in pink, dealing with quizzes and battles with Fairy-type Pokémon every day!

Wait, she does that to her Trainers?

Constantly. But, it’s… You know, I tried to close myself off from the rest of the Trainers there, but Ms. Opal kind of hazed me until I started socializing. And… It helped.

I told you, you need to express your appreciation more often!

gently caress you, Opal!

Language!

:sigh: But anyway… I never would have expected this, but I feel at home there. I can be as dramatic as I want because everyone else is just as dramatic as I am, and Opal runs the Gym with a tight enough fist that grudges don’t last long before she makes us air them and patch them up. I’m so used to being ignored that it’s kind of intoxicating – and before Opal dragged me off I wouldn’t have ever realized my needs were being ignored, you know?

I came here ready to face you down because I needed some closure. I did not expect to get saddled with Gym leadership. But… I don’t know.

… I don’t think I’ll ever forget what you did, but I’m willing to forgive it. I’ve been talking to Hop.

:sigh: He’s a lot nicer to me than I deserve.

See, that’s what I mean. I used to hate you, then I pitied you, but now… Now I’m willing to treat you as a person, I suppose?

Better than Rose ever did.

So you finally realized that, eh? Good for you, mate.

Little early to call me “mate,” I think.

Maybe someday. I’m looking forward to kicking your arse up and down Wyndon next Cup, though.

What, you think you’ll be lucky enough to qualify again?

No, I’ll be the Champion, you twat.

Good luck with that.

I saw that in a fight against a Falinx yesterday . No, it turns out, you can actually up and leave the tournament during finals. You can just go around and do whatever you want! At least from a cursory check, there don’t seem to be any changes in dialogue or anything, you can just go around and play the game like you weren’t in the middle of a major sporting event. I didn’t even know this was possible! Maybe it’s so you can go catch or train up your team if you need to? But they didn’t say anything about that. I was just looking for secrets. I guess I found one.

But ultimately, I don’t have anything I want to do right now. So it’s time to go back and actually progress the plot.

Announcer: The time for waiting is over! The Finals of the Champion Cup are about to begin! The two Trainers to face each other in the first battle of the first round are... A Trainer endorsed by the Champion himself, Challenger Gloria! Her opponent is... the raging wave! The master of Water types, Nessa!

I’ve got to hand it to our undefeated Champion. He’s got a eye for talent, too. But you’re not the Champion, and you’ll never become the Champion, either. Do you know why? It’s because I, Nessa, am going to defeat both you and Leon! I’m not going to underestimate you again. I’ll use Dynamax to wash you out to sea and beyond the horizon!

:getin:

Battle! (Gym Leader ~ Rematch) - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

Yep, we do get a Gym theme remix for these fights. And it’s a pretty solid one too, albeit a bit generic for my ears. Anyway, Nessa here presents me with a problem: I don’t have any strong Water counters on my team. I do have Mr. Blobby with Thunderbolt and Briggs with some Grass-type moves, but it I should have more than enough firepower to plow through regardless.

(I’m not gonna repost her throwing animation, you’ve already seen it.)

She leads with Golisopod, which gets nailed by Thunderbolt hard enough to activate its Ability, which puts it back into Nessa’s party and lets her throw out another Pokémon. Her Barraskewda then gets thrown out and hits Mr. Blobby with a super-effective Throat Chop, but this time Thunderbolt is strong enough to take it down in one hit. Golisopod comes out again, receives a Full Restore, gets Thunderbolted again, and shuffles back into her party again, leaving her Seaking to also get Thunderbolted into oblivion. This time, he finally takes it down.

The thing about Pelipper here? It’s both Water and Flying. Do you know what both of those types are weak to?

:unsmigghh:

Time for a change in strategy. Her Drednaw, her signature Pokémon, comes out next. Rather than keep Thunderbolting, I switch out for Briggs.

This move is very powerful, but it eats up like a third of Brigg’s HP. I almost never use it in normal combat. The thing is? Max moves only key off base move power, meaning Wood Hammer’s balance mechanism no longer applies and I get a truly powerful Max move out of the bargain.

(We’ve also already seen her Dynamaxing animation, they recycle them in these fights.)

You remember the last time we fought Nessa’s Drednaw?

It looks a lot different. Just because a type of Pokémon has the capacity to Gigantamax doesn’t mean every member of that species can. Only some of them have a Gigantamax factor, marked by an X symbol; without it, they are poo poo out of luck (unless you play the DLC).

Funnily enough, this implies that Nessa keeps two separate Drednaws. I don’t know why.

Unfortunately, I didn’t realize Drednaw’s G-Max move was Water-type, meaning it wouldn’t bring it to bear against Briggs. Tragic. If you want to see it, I recommend this link, which should take you right to the demonstration. But yeah, ultimately not a terrifying fight.

Look at that combination of effects; the Grassy Terrain from Briggs’s Max Overgrowth and the sandstorm kicked up by the Drednaw’s Max Rockfall (the only move it got to use).

Announcer: She defeated Nessa during the Gym Challenge and now has pulled it off again!

Even with my Dynamaxed partner, you weathered our waves and stood firm. Now that I think about it, Sonia was saying something about how amazing you were. I wish I’d paid more attention to what she was talking about. I bet everyone in Galar’s got their eyes on you now. You defeated my team, so now you’ve got to ride that current all the way to the end!

Announcer: Now...don’t go anywhere, ladies and gentlemen! The second battle of the first round will begin shortly!

One day we'll see a region where all the gym leaders/Elite Four/equivalents realise that monotype teams are a bad idea. Showcasing certain types is good! But if every single thing on your team shares a weakness, then you're going to lose to all but the dumbest rookie challengers. Nessa could be showcasing all the weird and hilarious things that learn Surf, for instance, instead of most of her team being cripplingly weak to a very common attack. Raihan sort of grasped the concept with his incomplete weather-based team but wasn't quite there.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, in the discussion of confusion and G-Max Smite: the chance of self-damage from confusion has actually been nerfed since gen 7, it's 33% now when it used to be 50%. It can still be pretty annoying, but it's not nearly as much so as it used to be. It's enough of a nerf that I no longer think it's worth spending a move slot (or a turn) on something like Confuse Ray, for instance, though I still won't turn up my nose at it when it's an added effect on a move that's already good (like the aforementioned G-Max Smite; I think I'd rather have confusion than Misty Terrain from Max Starfall).

Even the person with a goddamn Magikarp is more effective than him.
Yeah, since the shields need quantity of hits rather than quality, the Magikarp's actually pretty decent as long as the enemy isn't Water-immune somehow and it doesn't decide to pick its less-accurate moves for some reason.

It's tradition! :downs:

A few gyms have played with the idea a bit. Like the Electric gym in Black 2 has the gym leader whip out an Electric/Flying Emolga, which absolutely chumps the Ground-types you've probably been using to sweep the rest of the trainers. And the Ground gym leader has the Ground/Steel Excadrill to knock Grass to neutral.

I also liked the comment from Cheren when you beat his explicitly newbie-friendly Normal gym that boiled down to "If I had my full team of level 65s, I could chump everyone that came around with a level 10 puppy!"

But generally, I agree that monotype teams are, at the very least, boring. The puzzle theming of the gym is usually more interesting to me than the type itself, you could make a lot out of the competitive catching in Kabu's gym, or Melony's mountain climbing (And you could combine the Rock and Ice types for that, with some Ground and Water thrown in for good measure).

Off-topic, but this is the first time I've seen the Japanese names for the cities in SwSh, and what :psyduck:

Did they ever change the mechanic where things like confusion and paralysis were like a fifth less likely to trigger for the opponent? I seem to recall that being a thing.

I've never heard of this before and I can't find evidence of it having been a thing, although admittedly I didn't do an exhaustive investigation. I won't rule out it having existed, maybe someone who knows more than me can address this?

My single least favorite thing about shields (and I really don’t like them) is how moves that hit multiple times on seem to hit once. God, that would make things so much easier.

Oh, yes, these exist, but they don't do quite what we were talking about. Off the top of my head there's Limber (immune to paralysis), Insomnia (sleep), Immunity (poison), and Own Tempo (confusion), there might be others. There are also abilities like Guts (which in addition to its other effects, makes it so burn doesn't drop your attack) and Quick Feet (likewise for the speed drop from paralysis).

Also, yes, Scald is a great move with a somewhat odd distribution. The Isle of Armour DLC also adds a ground-type clone of it called Scorching Sands, which is kind of interesting.

Update 44: Crumbs…

Commentator: Ladies and gentlemen, we’re already at the second match of the Finals!

Commentator: If you’re just tuning in, ladies and gentlemen, we witnessed quite the surprise during the Finals here at this year’s Champion Cup, as the former Gym Challenger Bede stormed the stage! But Gloria was having none of it! This year’s top challenger made quick work of him before washing away Gym Leader Nessa! And now to take her on… here comes Gym Leader Allister—the boy known far and wide as the silent school-aged star!

I remember you... You were the strongest Gym Challenger I had. Er...so I reckon...we sh-should battle!

Battle! Galar Champion Cup (Elite Four) - Remix Cover (Pokémon Sword and Shield)

:ghost: battle! My strategy here is pretty simple: L337 has both Crunch and Shadow Claw are strong against Ghost, strong enough to take down the Dusknoir…

… And even this truly fantastic chandelier which hits L337 with Burn. It’s tough enough that I end up having to spend a Full Restore just to keep L337 alive. She also takes down the Polteageist and the Cursola, but only barely; by the time I switch her out, she has 22 HP left.

Unlike Nessa’s Drednaw, I’m pretty sure this is the same Gengar we faced back at the Gym. But, tragically, it turns out it can’t take the heat. I was expecting at least something vaguely resembling the star performance it gave back at Stow-on-Side, but no.

Mr. Blobby casts it down in one hit. Disappointing. A poor showing all around. I don’t even have much to say other than that’s what you get when you make a 10-year-old play against adults in a sporting event. We do have more evidence of Mr. Blobby’s otherworldly might, however.

AradoBalanga posted:

All hail Mr. Blobby, the poofy destroyer of worlds.

All hail! :worship:

Bruce had the chance to learn this move after we beat it. I presume it’s hilarious to actual Britons.

Commentator: Challenger Gloria has done it again! What a performance! She sails right through!

...That was ace. G-give it your best out there. I’m mad about strong Trainers...

Commentator: Our seemingly unstoppable challenger is headed for the final round, but who will she meet there? Will it be I-Pass-on-Dynamaxing Piers? Or the Dragon Lord himself—Raihan? The next match will decide it, so don’t go far from your screens!

Marnie?

I know I shouldn’t be here, but I came to pick up my brother. And to wish you good luck.

She bluffed her way past the guards. I’m so proud of her.

Piers…

I hear you lost your fight against Raihan?

Yeah. Got him down to one Pokémon, though.

Without Dynamaxin’ your Pokémon, you tool. You could’ve won!

drat.

I told you, you ain’t proving anythin’ by refusin’ to Dynamax!

Fair warnin’, Gloria –

– Hey! –

– I bet you can beat ’im, but he’s the last Leader in the Challenge for a reason. Keep your wits about you, yeah?

I mean, yeah, but… Marnie?

Yeah, love?

… Good luck?

:h:

Good luck. We’ll all be cheerin’ for you from the stands.

:shobon:

Commentator: Who will earn the right to challenge the unbeatable Champion Leon?! Will it be the brilliant rising star, Challenger Gloria? Or will it be the only Trainer that Champion Leon calls his rival... the tamer of dragons, Raihan?!

You’ve made it all the way here! I guess that’s why the Champion himself endorsed you, yeah? Leon’s my rival—and he chose you. So I’ve got to first prove I’m better than you if I’m to beat him! I’ve reworked my whole team, and now we’re all geared up for one-on-one battles! You might be thinking that you beat me once already... But if you think I’m the same Raihan you faced during the Gym Challenge, you’ll soon regret it!

Battle! (Gym Leader ~ Rematch) ~ Switching - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

He has contextual quotes for most weather conditions, including ones you put up.

Raihan may have dropped the double battle gimmick, but if anything he’s ramped the weather gimmick up further; even his first Pokémon immediately drops the weather effects that boosts Fire-type moves. Speaking of which, I outsmarted myself here. I’ve looked at Raihan’s team list briefly and noticed almost all of his Pokémon were Dragon-types, so I decided to lead with Briggs and his Ice-type moves. Unfortunately, Raihan(‘s programmers) anticipated something like this and had his first Pokémon be a Fire-type. I switched to Tiddles and hit it with an Earthquake, nearly killing it, only to learn…

… He/they’d ALSO anticipated that move. Solar Beam, for those unfamiliar, is a Grass-type move that normally takes a turn to charge, leaving you a sitting duck; however, with that weather affect, it skips its charging phase, meaning it can nail the Water- or Ground-type Pokémon you’re likely to switch in. My first Pokémon down in the finals, and it went down before any of his. How embarrassing. Adding to the embarrassment, I switch Bruce out on the logic that you can probably just out-tank whatever damage it can do – at which point it breaks out a move that puts Bruce to sleep. By the time I get things under control and the Torkoal down for the count, Bruce is down to half health.

Fortunately, his Flygon is next, and Briggs Ice Beams it apart. Likewise, his Turtonator goes down to Baklava real quick. See, that Pokémon’s signature move sets it up to retaliate whenever an enemy uses a physical attack; however, Baklava’s Rock Tomb makes it flinch, costing it to its turn and allowing me to take off the last bit of its health. Next up? Well, there’s a guy all the way back at Circhester who will teach your Pokémon something called Draco Meteor.

Using Meteo does drop her Special Attack, an acceptable trade-off. Largely because I plan on using her as a meatshield. Duraludon isn’t weak to Dragon-type moves, and the last time I fought it it cut a swathe through my Pokémon. So I decide to use poor L337 here as a sacrifice, something to stall it just long enough for the Gigantamax to wear off.

I didn’t realize I never saw its G-Max move last time we fought. Whatever, it doesn’t matter. Bruce comes out next and hits it with two Max Knuckles in a row. It goes down.

I’ve heard some praise for this fight online specifically as a way to prepare new players for competitive, and I can definitely see where it’s coming from. That bit at the beginning with the Torkoal is particularly genius; for players who’ve been breezing through the game up to this point, the double shock that comes from hitting an unexpected Pokémon and having to switch out AND learning they used it to set you up for a punishing hit might be enough to wake them up to the possibilities of deeper planning. Of course, my first time through it just made me use more experience candies, but :v:. I could definitely have handled this more effectively – I was not anticipating that particular twist – but as it was, it let me demonstrate this fight a little better.

My lovely Pokémon and I have become much stronger than we were before... But you just blew right past us! Beyond anything I’d imagined! I’m still pretty young myself, but it just goes to show that there’s always someone younger coming up, reaching further than you ever dreamed... And you’ve got your whole future ahead of you! Keep up the momentum! Prove that Leon’s not unbeatable!

Commentator: Number 815, Challenger Gloria, has achieved a dazzling triumph! The Trainer who was endorsed by the Champion will now face the very man who endorsed her!

Eh?

All right, indeed.

I came just to cheer you on, you know! Still, it’s not easy picking sides... After all, it’s the showdown between my big brother and my rival... Who should I really want to win more? Haha, just kidding, it’s you.

I better hope so, after all you’ve talked it up.

Gloria… Win or lose, this has been one brilliant summer, hasn’t it?

Aye, that it has. It’s been good travelling with you.

Agreed.

I've been doing thinking, doing some soul-searching, and I've come to a conclusion. I'll bottom-line it for you here first: this LP will end with Shield's main storyline. I will create a separate LP in a few months for the postgame and DLC.

After throwing up the latest update, I went back and copied all my updates into a Word doc. I have written 72,945 words in just under two months :stonklol:. That's about as long as a commercial novel, and that's not counting images, coding, and the updates I have left to write. I've been thinking about how I'm starting to seriously burn out on writing about Shield, and those two things are probably related. There's still more of Gloria's story to tell, but I think I'm hitting the point where trying to tell it would be a chore rather than a joy, and I'm doing this because it's fun.

So what's probably going to happen is that I'll finish the main story (and I have enough gas in the tank to do so), do a postmortem where I go over what I changed and what I didn't, and declare the LP over before doing another for a while (I'm thinking… Final Fantasy I for the GBA). Once that's done, I'll have cleansed my palate enough to come back and polish off the rest of Shield in a new thread as an effective third LP, one specifically dedicated to the postgame and DLC.

So, uh, there's that.

Update 45: The Key to Saving Galar's Future

The tense, still air on the pitch… And the exact opposite from the audience, cheering and yelling... They’re both fantastic, wouldn’t you say? But remember, the audience is also a bit cruel... They want nothing more than to see one of us lose, after all! It can fill you with fear knowing that, but I absolutely love pushing past the fear. I love giving it everything I’ve got as a Trainer and seeing my team give everything they’ve got to seize another victory! It’s the greatest feeling in the world, and I can’t get enough of it!

:getin:

I can feel my partners itching with anticipation inside their Poké Balls... We’re going to have a real champion time!

Me and Charizard, and all the rest of our team, will use all our knowledge and experience to crush you completely!

If you listen to one track in the next several updates, make it this.

Audience: Hey! Look at the monitor!

This is YOUR FAULT, Leon. I wasn’t going to sit there and watch while you put everything I’ve built at risk.

Audience: What is he TALKING about?

Oh no.

You NEED to be on top of Hammerlocke Tower in the next 20 minutes or the Entity will run amok!

Audience: Why are there purple lasers in the sky :froggonk:

Oh poo poo.

Aye.

loving hell, Rose lost the plot.

The mad bastard… It wasn’t supposed to go like this!

How much of this did you know about?

Enough to know something like this would happen in the next few years anyway. And It’s largely thanks to you.

Uh oh.

NOT “uh oh”, we had an idea something was about to go wrong but we couldn’t have prepped anything without you and Sonia’s research. And then the fucker took Sonia off the case to keep from angering Magnolia and we never figured out how they actually stopped the Darkest Day… I really hate to ask you this, you kids shouldn’t be caught up in this. But I need you two to try and hold down the fort –

Wait! Wait. Every time the Darkest Day swept around, Zacian and Zamazenta didn’t just show up to stop it, they were already around. And I think I know where they are.

… Really?

I mean, I agree in theory.

Do you remember? We ran into Zamazenta there all the way back then. I don’t know why they haven’t shown up yet, but if we’re going to find them, it’s got to be back there.

… I’m willing to trust you on this. I’ll contact the Gym Leaders and have them keep the rest of the country under control. Go!

Postwick - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

Sonia! We could use your help. We’re here to find Zacian and Zamazenta –

Because this is the Darkest Day.

Aye.

I loving knew it. The moment the sky went dark… Have to admit, I thought you’d still be dealing with the tournament now, though…

The whole region’s in chaos! There’re giant Pokémon everywhere, the power’s flickering…

I’m surprised Rose isn’t on it.

/ He caused it!

Will catch you up later, we have stuff to do in the Weald. You coming?

No. All I have is my Yamper, I’d just get in your way. I have a few last things I can dig up, though, a let you know if I find anything important.

Then we have to go.

… Do you think they’ll be all right, Sonia?

I don’t know.

Slumbering Weald - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

No. I’m back in unfamiliar territory. I HATE unfamiliar territory. This isn’t the tournament I’ve wanted to win my whole life or doing some research. I don’t know what this is!

Last time we went through the Weald, we came out alive and sane.

That really doesn’t help…

Look,
we’ve both grown loads stronger and so have our Pokémon. Remember that conversation we had, back at Magnolia’s lab?

About kings and legends?

Think of this as our legend. Mate, you’re about to be the first historian to talk to Zacian and loving Zamazenta!

Oh shite, I didn’t think of that.

I reckon whatever we’re about to see will be pretty legendary itself! Let’s head in and add another page to our tale!

Thanks, mate.

Welcome back to the Slumbering Weald. The first part is just as we left it, but once we go past the point where we met Zamazenta the first time…

…The Pokémon get a lot stronger. As is standard for JRPGs, for all the rush in the story, you in fact have plenty of time to do all the exploring you want. But while we do have a few items to find, mostly holdable items with dubious benefits, we don’t have any good reason to delay.

Look, at least we can see where we’re walking…

And nothing bloody else!

I –

Wait.

It’s looking at you, Gloria.

Human

Aagh!

you will do

AAAGH!

Gloria!

Sensory… Sensory overload. gently caress me. And…

… And they’re gone.

Fog, too.

Hop, did they try to speak to you?

… Pardon, what? They just, you know, howled.

It was like voice scratching around in my head…

You know what, at this point I’d believe anything. They tell you anything?

No… Maybe? It was too much all at once, I nearly passed out. But I think I got a sense of… Approval? Maybe? I dunno, mate.

Are you right to keep going?

Yeah, just a little woozy. Is this what being pissed feels like? It’s already going away, though. We need to press on.

Slumbering Weald Shrine - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

It’s in marvelous condition. And…

It looks like somebody left us some presents.

Wait, if Zacian and Zamazenta were Pokémon, then are those… Also them?

No idea. Only one thing to do…

Just gonna pick up the ancient magical artifact and put it in your Bag, mate?

This shrine is a known landmark in the Weald. Treasure hunters have been visiting it for centuries. The only way we could find two priceless artifacts right out in the open like this is if someone put them there for us. I bet you can guess who.

That settles it! I’m taking the sword! Though...wow, would you look at the state of this thing? It seems like it might fall to pieces if you so much as look at it funny. I don’t know if these rusty old things will really be able to stop the Darkest Day, but... Well, I guess it can’t hurt to have them along! Let’s hope they bring us some good luck!

… Well, if there isn’t anything else for us here, we may as well head to Hammerlocke

Calling a skytaxi now.

The Darkest Day - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

It’s a real shame, the way things have turned out. You make it all the way to the Championship Match, then something like this has to happen! And Chairman Rose thinking that the energy pouring from the Darkest Day would somehow be the key to saving Galar’s future? It all seems a bit mad, if you ask me... I can’t follow at all how that’s supposed to work.

I don’t think ROSE knows how it’s supposed to work.

Look, we really don’t have time to waste.
I’m off to help my brother!

… And off he goes. I should probably follow. Is there anything you need me to do before I head in?

We Gym Leaders worked together with the city’s Pokémon, and we’ve got everyone evacuated. Go on then! Into Hammerlocke Stadium with you!

I-I mean, please, help me! I know this is selfish of me, but I must beg your assistance! I want you to head into the underground power plant and stop Mr. Rose!

:stare:

Mr. Rose woke it up too early... We called it the Darkest Day Entity. It's some kind of lost Legendary Pokémon we found as we were mining Galar particles underneath Hammerlocke. Apparently, the energy emitted from its body is what causes Dynamaxing. And it’s the source of Galar particles themselves? I don’t have a head for the technical details… But, at this rate, all the Pokémon in the Galar region will Dynamax and go berserk! If that were to happen—

:catstare: Okay, yeah, I’m on it. Is there anything I should know before I head down?

I’ve enlisted the help of the Champion’s younger brother, too. He’s already down there. Harriet! Unlock the lift!

Harriet:Yes, ma’am!

Go.

This has all gone to poo poo.
