not 100%. the public beta build goes up to the Gonarch fight, and is a grand total of 9 HUGE maps in it's current form. I'm assuming the rest will be dropping over the next few months, but what's here is rediculously impressive.

Are there any “quintessential” reviews/walkthroughs of original Doom 1/2 levels that aren’t just play through but give a good narrative or critical eye to the design and flow overall? Something like that would be interesting to watch.

Same; don't like playing "incomplete" games when I can help it. Looking forward to this getting finished so I can get through it.

This is beyond pretty and really well thought out, though I question if the Gonarch stuff needed to be like 3-4 full scale maps worth of chase and fight.

The official trailer that shows it off in motion.

I mean there's a difference between a long dev time producing good results like here, and a long dev time producing bad results (DNF), or no results at all (Star Citizen)

I was pretty happy with Black Mesa even without Xen because it's not exactly a great part on replays if it was remade as-is, so this is all just a bonus to me.

Same here. I got it at 50% off years back and loved it. The original (free) mod version was ace as well.

I wanna say the developer had moved onto Jupiter Hell well before Bethesda came knocking. There were a lot of worries, but all that really changed in the end was the name.

I don't know what this thing is, and I don't care. I'm just tired of seeing your stupid newbie av from 2011.
Played though quite a bit of Xen tonight and while it is awesome, these chase sequences aren't doing it for me. I'm at what I think is the final one (ran into a HEV corpse that gave me full ammo, and I'm running down a flaming tunnel littered with webbing) and I can't get past it. I lucked through previous ones but this one I just can't do. Also, Gonarch's Lair feels a bit too long.

I've played both just now.

RCK is sprawling and genuinely tries to kill you will all kinds of spine crushers, completely dark rooms, damage floors etc. Although it does give you invisibility in later sections to sneak past cyberdemons and zombie hordes.
It's more complex than the texturing could lead you to think.
Seriously, your eyes will be offended

RCK2 is smaller and less ambitious, but still pretty amusing.

This kind of texturing is still a thing.

Maybe a weird place to ask this but ever since I grew up along with these kinds of graphics I've always wondered how these absurdly detailed pixel art things were done. Is it digitised artwork or just genuine pixel art, or a combination of both? It just blows my mind how absurd they are.

Its a combination of both, depending upon the thing you're looking at. Like Mortal Kombat and Doom's sprites were all scans, but then touched up by hand. Other things are pure pixel art. You can kinda learn to recognize the style, scans tend to have more perspective and light banding.

That background looks mostly like hand sprite art to me, the buildings especially. The volcano could maybe be a scan or a trace of an existing image.

Some of the best looking stuff is just talented artists knowing the medium.

Shouldnt that actually be a liability? Remember that Partial Invisibility randomizes the angle that projectiles are shot at (separately from the randomized angle the enemy is made to face), and that enemies still see you even with it equipped (being able to sneak by them in plain sight while partially invisible without them waking up is a ZDoom-ism that really should default to "off" but doesn't), so what I'm expecting is more that you attempt to sneak by the Cyberdemons but they all aggro and then start spamming rockets everywhere unpredictably and you die in a hail of them.
