Untangling the hot mess that is Star Citizen is a nightmare for someone working in an industry that generally gives you an extremely short turnaround on a story designed to nab some interest and move you along.

I'm fairly certain that if someone were to write that article for them that they could generate some interest. Maybe. Unless CIG's temper tantrum was enough to make publishers wary, despite their utter lack of followthrough.
That's fair, but the BBC piece was almost pro-SC propaganda. They mischaracterized the game as primarily crowd-funded and downplayed the ship sales by only briefly mentioning them with a screenshot of a $45 ship purchase. Even in a fluff piece any quasi-journalist should at least mention that there are ships people are buying for hundreds and thousands of dollars -- and not necessarily as a negative/shocking aspect of the story, it's simply a significant point of interest. They also called it massively multiplayer in the present tense, among other inaccuracies.

I'm going to guess that's because someone wrote it for them and then they cashed a check.

One thing I don't understand is why people like B'tak and Krill01 are convinced that Star Citizen is the game for them. Both of them want to avoid other players like the plague yet Star Citizen is a multiplayer game. B'tak continually devises new mechanics to that end. Krill01 doesn't just want to opt out of PvP, they also want to completely avoid economic competition with other players. I can't see this ending well for either of them even if the game did come out as promised.

I haven't played it, but isn't that a thing they can do in Elite: Dangerous? Just find an unoccupied slice of space and mine/space-truck their way to an awesome ship?

Yeah in E:D you can just leave populated space and scan planets and stars forever. You can also play solo so you don't get instanced with other PCs, but NPCs can still interdict you and blow you up.

Is Star Citizen just a retelling of the Wizard of Oz and I missed the memo? We've got so many people without brains, hearts or courage to pick from on the way to meet a guy who is basically pulling a whole lot of bullshit on people from behind a curtain.

They completely believe the tripe CIG is selling them about private servers and imagining a whole safety net that doesn't exist. A multiplayer game with no PvP whatsoever. You may as well play Space Minecraft in creative mode, there's no consequences and no economy there either. The minute there are consequences, an economy is implied, and these guys are terrified of consequences. I don't even understand why they'd put up with believable physics because surely that's going to impose limitations they can't bear. But without some kind of economy MMO's are just dead. Even single-player strategy games rely on them. It's a paradigm of gaming we haven't found an alternative for outside a creative sandbox.

I can't wait until the day E:D gets multi-crew ships running and someone in the brown sea points out that E:D is offering everything the SC PTU is supposed to have. Planetary landings, multi-crew ships, a PvP slider... everything except :gary: and rising Hollywood starlet Sandi Gardiner.

They'll be shouted down at first, but eventually the Shitizens will get pissed off after episode 381 of Reverse The Verse is full of "well, we're working on the vision for how to implement procedural birds" while 70% of the ships the whales bought aren't even viewable in the hangar.

This is beyond a tire fire, it's the entire Rio Grande stacked with 20 feet of tires set on fire. It's amazing.
