So I take comments to heart. You make excellent and valid points in your comments. That is not what we are taught as mortarmen and it in not by the book. What you need to understand was this was about 7 months in and roughly 60 direct firefights of a 15 months deployment and 107 firefights at the end. We had to adapt to the enemy's TTP's and figure out a what to do to survive and still accuratly and timly support the base. At this point I had already had two of my men wounded, not including me, I was able to come back after a few weeks, their wounds were more serious and were not as fortunate. Again 97% of our fight were Direct lay (using poles with cardboard taped on with elevations and charges pre set and registered: point and shoot) the enemy ranged from 200m out to 2k out from our base each fight.. We had to support our back side from snipers while the tube was firing the oppsite way. i.e the M4, again not practical, but a survival tool to keep their sharpshooters from getting clean shots at us inside a huge bulleseye. WP was to mask any incoming fires on ourselves and our towers, hence why we would lay down so many and move on to the next area we were taking fire from or tower was. There was no time for conventional fires because of the amount of fire the enemy was laying down and the fact the FO could only pinpoint the area of enemy fire and not his exact location, therefore he would say shoot a specific target areas and we would adjust (something that we perfected as time went on). In other words to simply agree to disagree.. *Controlled Chaos*.. we had so much practice and had registed all targets in our location so we knew exactly where our rounds would land and where they needed to be to supress and mask the enemy from getting clean shots on any of our men on the base. It didnt always work, our Medic was sniped in the neck among others who were wounded in exchanges for the course of this horrible deployment. The reason i am taking the time to type this is because of the amount of people that feed off our comments and none of them know a thing. You obviously have great knowledge and I respect that. I just ask that you fully know our situation before you start critisizing. I have been in the military 13 year and deployed 5 times, 4 of which to Afghanistan.
