The most compelling characters I ever read Sanderson write were the deeply religious guys who were questioning their faith because that felt like it came from a genuine place of understanding. Otherwise he's really not great at writing from perspectives too dissimilar from his own, imo.

Nen has the cool advantage over stands where the user actively chooses what powers to manifest so just knowing someone's powers gives you a lot of information about who they are. The stats and typing of these abilities is complete bullshit and should be just as ignored as stand charts are.

I know I banned one of them from the pyf meme thread where he was at the time a regular and apparently not one single person mourned his absence. He also sent me a pm when I probated him in the first place that he was not writing porn, he was writing a porno version of some famous wwe wrestling match, and that people who didn't understand that were pedophiles

Since my fever addled brain started to recall all the lovely books I ever read for some reason, at least Sanderson's writing isn't as bad as loving Shad. Its been several years and I still remember him droning on and on about how much women his anti-hero raped and how the rape babies are now coming to kill the anti-hero.

I think Lindsay Ellis discussed it in one of her videos about the show but it's a huge reason why the show fell off a cliff after season 4 despite reviewing very well until the final season. I remember being excited for the first time in awhile when Cersei blew up the sept because surely that would be her undoing as the political consequences come crashing down on her head but it turned out it'd just be some rocks much later and the Lannisters are somehow unbeatable until the very end. Yeah shifting from political factions full of interesting characters to focus in tighter on the remaining big players was probably a good call but then a bunch of the characters turn and reveal that they are 2 dimensional cut outs. Ditching the Manderlys is one thing because, yeah, at that point introducing this entire other bannerman and setting up the complex situation at Winterfell might take too long, but their alternative was to change Ramsay Bolton's character from an insane bloodthirsty rear end in a top hat who was clearly perched on a teetering house of cards...into a nearly invincible wunderkind whose mysterious best friend Twenty Goodman could defeat all of the best fighters in Westeros. The poo poo at Winterfell is like the last really good thing happening in the last book, and they turned it into the most embarrassing dreck aimed at non-existent Ramsay fanboys

re: Brandon Sanderson, he seems like a harmless goober. I remember he bragged about how productive he was and he'd take breaks and reward himself by cracking a pack of Magic: The Gathering cards and yeah that tracks. I've been reading Mistborn as a way to decompress in-between working my way through Malazan and I have to say having something lighter to read in-between all the sprawling dark cynicism probably immensely improved my enjoyment of both series.

Seeing what the main female character's ultimate fate was originally going to be in the first draft of The Way of Kings, I have zero problems with Sanderson's writing being "sexless". He does tend to overexplain things though. One of the big reveals at the end of TWOK would have been so much better if it didn't smack you in the face going "HEY STUPID YA GET IT??? YA GET WHAT'S HAPPENING?"

Sanderson's prose writing is pretty mid, used to be worse, and it's hard going back to his earlier works before he figured out how to write characters. But he's good at constructing plots with big payoffs and it makes for fun light reading.

Met up with my teenage cousin the other day and they pulled a Piers Anthony book out of their bag. "what? I dunno it was free and the cover looks cool?" was their response to my "oh god no" upon seeing it. Fifteen minutes of them and my partner looking increasingly horrified as they got deeper into the Google results, and I think that one went back to the free library.
