I remember playing this (pretty ineffectually, I assume). Fun part is that the only things I remember clearly are the icons for the cannons and the workers, so it's a good bet that young-me wasn't very good at the game.

No to the Workhouse Act. It's unhygienic, bringing in all these peasants. Also appropriating private workhouses would cut into my own income.

Consulates in Imuq, as well as Sangju and eventually Sangju's neighbors. As Rabil borders two great powers and as such I cannot recommend it as an investment. On the other hand, Imuq's cotton production is worth clashing with Suthumsa over, and I've already stated my opinion on the importance of influencing the nations to our north.

Let us bring more peasants into the city. But not in state-operated workhouses. Private individuals, such as this humble servant, are much more capable of handling such operations.

Expanding the rail network to Kendeburg and building a port in Benharg seem like the best moves at the moment. We absolutely must increase our steel production, otherwise how shall we defend ourselves and our foreign 'friends' and 'business partners'?

OK, so. Ports and depots gather resources from the immediately surrounding hexes, including their own, which are delivered via transport capacity to the capital. Resources are also delivered by the merchant marine after trade. In the capital, two labor can be spent to convert two resources (2 timber, 2 wool or 2 cotton, 1 iron and 1 coal) into 1 material (lumber, paper, fabric, or steel), or two materials (lumber, fabric, or steel) into one good (furniture, clothing, hardwares, or armaments). 2 labor can also be spent to convert 2 grain, 1 fruit, and 1 meat into 1 canned food, or 1 steel and 1 lumber into 1 transport capacity. Conversion of resources into materials or materials into goods is capped by the current capacity of that particular industry, which can be raised by increasing amounts of steel and lumber.

1 labor is provided each season by each unit of untrained workers, 2 labor by each unit of trained workers, and 4 labor by each unit of expert workers. Labor doesn't store up between seasons (obviously), but 'spending' also doesn't spend the workers, so you keep getting it season after season. We can (hypothetically) attract up to two new units of untrained workers to the capital each season by spending one clothing, one furniture, and one canned food per worker attracted. Canned food otherwise just papers over temporary shortages in specific types of food needed- the important thing to know about food is that at the moment we could support up to 12 population in the capital, at the cost of requiring us to tie up 12 of our transport on food. We can trim some of the transport we're using to deliver food down to make room for other resources with a smaller population, but we might as well gather stuff for future canned food while we have some slack in the transport network.

Building our furniture, clothing, or hardwares factory up to capacity 4 means that any town connected to the capital by ports or rail that has at least 2 timber in the province (with a furniture factory) will start delivering 1 lumber to the transport network, any town connected that has at least 2 wool or two cotton (with a clothing factory) will start delivering 1 fabric, and any town with 1 iron and 1 coal available (with a metalworks) will start delivering 1 steel. This takes about a year and a half delay after being connected, and it's worth noting that the resources in the province don't have to be on our transport network for local transport to allow the town to start its own industries. Larger outputs are available in towns with more resources available and a more heavily-developed factory in the capital; our only candidates for that thus far would be steel towns, since those have at least 2 coal and 2 iron available each, and the amount of timber or raw fiber available to our lumber or fabric towns isn't enough for a second material yet.

Gold is free money! $200 per season if we transport it through our transport network.

The factories you, directly, interact with are only built in the capital, which is your primary center of industry. Manufacturing in other towns is abstracted as the growth of production of materials and (eventually) goods in those towns with sufficient local resources and a sufficiently large factory in the capital. So, yes, there can be factories in the other towns, but once they've grown, all you have to worry about is taking delivery of their materials and goods.

Shame there's so little interest in a good war these days, but someone is bound to be stupid enough to declare war on us eventually. In the mean time, let's focus on getting our country stronger industrially, so we can humiliate our future enemies in as an expedient a fashion as possible. Now, then, for the voting...

The Workhouses Act is a tricky one: we'll need the labor eventually, but at this time, I'm not entirely sure we would even be able to feed these people, let alone find work for them. As such, I would vote against the Workhouses Act.

Train two trained labor to expert labor: they're critical for the quick construction of new facilities, and we should be able to solve any crippling paper or money problems shortly with timber and gold.

A port near Benharg sounds like it would satiate our need for timber for some years, but good lord is that port near Friercherlen tempting for its gold mine. Gold is practically the only way to make money without honest trade, so I can't really decide which is the better immediate investment. Assuming both aren't possible to pursue simultaneously, I leave the decision between the two for the Interior Minister.

Since I'm advocating for the gold, expanding the textiles in Friercherlen also makes a fair amount of sense. Any second industry is up to the Interior Minister.

As for the consulates...I'm afraid I can't offer good advice. I don't know what foreign policy the minister is pursuing, or what the precise needs of our economy are and will be: therefor, I trust him to establish consulates in those nations that will be most beneficial to us. Now, if we were deciding who to invade, that would be a different story; but since we aren't pushing for an early war, knowing the specifics of the consulates isn't important, as we won't be invading someone we're trying to make into allies.

For those who might be confused as to why I seem so hung up on wood, timber is needed for both paper and lumber: paper is needed for training, and lumber is needed for industry. Without enough timber, we can't do anything. Everything requires timber for something. Similarly, the reason I'm excited about the gold is because gold is the most consistent way to make money: in fact, the I believe it's the only way other than trade, which can either make us very rich from high demand, or grind our economy to a halt from low demand.

The problem with making money through trade is that we need labor to make the trade goods, and training labor requires paper and money: thus timber helps give us both money *and* workers, while gold just straight up gives us money.

Oh, and come to think of it, I haven't given my name yet, have I? Ironside MP, humbly at your service. It's been a long while since I first threw threw my hat into the ring, but I do remember a few tricks, so I hope we can all have a grand old time together.

Some mechanics:

Generally speaking, villages start producing more or less manufactured goods once connected by rail. I believe it was possible to get better manufactured goods if you have a rail terminus in or around the village, but it was a while since I last played it.

However, rail termini are expensive, and it can be quite tricky to optimize things so that you get your completed goods from villages, access to you normal natural resources, access to discovered natural resources and high degree of coverage (meaning you dont leave any natural resources in your land untransported).

There are often also tradeoffs between getting an important resource now, but having a cranky overall rail setup later, or going for a better long term setup that does not generate resources early.

Since you do not know where some of the most important resources are, and these are revealed throughout the game, things become quite complex.

Fun facts:

You can later buy plots in the lands of minors. You can buy an entire mountain range, and then prospect it also buying a lot of duds in the process, or you prospect first and then buy the "hits". Thing is, plots with a known resource cost a lot more.

Concerning conquest: From a strictly powerplaying perspective, we should forcefully conquer our neighbour. This does create some animosity, but it very worth it in the long run (because their villages will also produce manufactored things for us once linked up). There is a "badboy" mechanic, meaning that trying to force annex multiple minors means you do not get any kind of peaceful benefit with other minors, but eating one minor is generally speaking OK.

Incidentally, there's one more specialist that works on the map that we don't have yet; I've been putting it off because of the cost of the extra labor and the fact I don't think we urgently need it yet. That specialist is the Farmer, which can currently improve the farming on grain farming land and fruit orchards to produce 2 grain or fruit instead of 1. Those improvements can be seen near Oosten City- grain land and fruit orchards get improved for free at game start in when immediately adjacent to the capital. That said, if anybody starts thinking we need to start developing farmland, feel free to propose it.

The specialists we already have are the Engineer, who builds our railroads, ports, and depots, the Prospector, who helps us find mineral deposits, and the Miner, needed to build mines to recover mineral deposits. It's entirely possible to have multiples of any specialist sort, but I'd think that would pretty much be overkill compared to the cost at this point in time.

Hundreds Gather at Swan Palace for Queen Heidi's 21st Birthday Celebration

A throng of aristocrats, industrialists, merchants, members of the Reichsrat, government ministers, foreign ambassadors, prominent intellectuals, and their families gathered at the famous Swan Palace in Oosten City last night to celebrate the Queen's twenty-first birthday. The state ballroom of the Swan Palace was open to dances both before and after the twelve-course dinner, and the guests all dazzled in full formal attire. Queen Heidi herself was seen to dance with many of the gentlemen, both young and old, attending the celebration.

The event followed a speech made by the Queen in the Central Square in Oosten City that afternoon, where she expressed her gratitude to her subjects for their loyalty and her hopes for many more peaceful years. "It has been my privilege to serve as your Queen, and I can imagine no nation finer in which to live. May God continue to bless us for peace and prosperity for many years to come!"

There are still no hints as to whether the Queen is favoring any gentleman for marriage, to ensure a legitimate heir to the throne.

It looks like there's a tied vote on training and new recruitment to expand the labor pool; I'll try to do a compromise position. The two industries with the greatest support for expansion are the steel mill and metalworks; our first priority for transport expansion will be Kendeburg, followed by Benharg or Friercherlen. We'll establish consulates in, at least, Sangju, Imuq, and As Ranbil.

As 1818 began, a flurry of improvements to Oosten City's steel industry and investments in a steel industry in Kendeburg began. Over the next three years, there would also be expansions in the local lumber industry and investment in textiles industries in Mierlau and Friercherlen.





Over the course of 1818, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued to expand its operations opening new trade consulates in six new nations. The work of the consulates to resolve disputes with local traders and the continued process of friendly trade slowly helped cement Oosten's friendly relations with other nations, even as they helped build up inventories to support new expansions in industry or to cushion against shocks in supply.




The slow development Oosten had been undergoing was shaken by a series of inventions unveiled in early 1820. A Stengan inventor, Antonio Moretti, developed the cotton gin to reduce the labor of separating out seeds from cotton blooms, while two Oostenisch inventors, Hans Muller and Adolf Goldwasser, developed, respectively, methods for chemical 'retting' of flax stalks to rot away the inner stalk and mechanised 'heckling' to separate the flax fibers from straw. With these new inventions, the labor necessary to provide cotton or flax fiber to be woven into fabric could be greatly reduced, and the overall productivity of farmland for these crops could be greatly increased.

When a new invention comes into existence, every Great Power gets a chance to invest in the new invention at once, for a cash down payment. Once an invention is invested in, it provides new capabilities for the Great Power that acquired it.





Investors in Oosten were quick to leap on these new opportunities. By the latter half of 1820, several new agricultural machinery companies had opened in Oosten City, and the University of Oosten had established an expanded department of scientific agriculture that began to accept students from the countryside. Mail order catalogs of agricultural machinery, clothing, and hardware began to be printed for several mail-order retailers who hoped to make sales to farmers in the countryside surrounding the rail lines and ports of the empire.

Training up a Farmer specialist strips some labor from our capital, which can be an issue.



As a rail depot opened near Kendeburg in mid-1820, the town began to have more access to the markets and the products of Oosten City. Industrialists in Kendeburg rapidly began developing their own steel industry, which, by the beginning of 1821, was beginning to show notable output.








By the start of 1821, changes were afoot all across western Oosten, which was more closely-knit than ever before. The town of Mierlau hosts both lumber and textiles industries, while the new steel industry in Kendeburg has begun to set the town to growing. Improved modern machinery is helping to expand the flax production of the fields nearest Oosten City. A rail line stretches from Oosten City to the eastern portion of Kendeburg province, while a new port in Friercherlen has begun to supply gold mined in the Frier mountains to goldsmiths and jewellers in Oosten City. Friercherlen is slowly developing its own textiles industry, while a modern port is being established in Pfenborg to ship out its iron. Wambusben remains isolated, although gold and iron have been discovered near the tiny town.

The windmills visible in Mierlau and Kendeburg indicate that they have grown to host their own industry. We can now see our Farmer working on the fields near Oosten City.



The past three years have seen steady investment in transport capacity in Oosten, sufficient to handle the increase in local industries in Mierlau and Kendeburg, the output of the coal mines near Kendeburg and gold mines near Friercherlen, and an increase in agricultural shipping besides. The greater security of supplies of raw resources and of food for Oosten City has helped the city grow in size and wealth, and the supply of gold has proved profitable for mine owners and the government.




Oosten City has grown to 900,000 souls over the past three years, between natural increase and immigrants tempted in from the countryside by the promise of employment by the city's factories, continuously hungry for labor. Continued purchase from more primitive nations has ensured the growth of very healthy inventories that could support an expansion of the lumber industry, and somewhat more modest inventories cushioning against supply disruptions to the steel industry. The textiles industry has, so far, managed to meet its needs with a combination of imported cotton and native flax, but the occasionally unreliable sources of foreign cotton has left it with little margin to insulate against disruptions to supply.





Investments in expansion of the lumber and steel industries of Oosten City have allowed for modest expansion in output for both, somewhat held back by a critical shortage of skilled labor. Oosten City's textiles industry has remained nearly unchanged over the past three years, without sufficient supplies of raw inputs to justify any expansion.






Steady production of hardwares for foreign and domestic markets has continued over the past three years, while output of clothing began to match that of hardwares in 1820. The local furniture industry has grown, but remains smaller and somewhat more variable in output than those other two. All these industries could easily expand output, given enough employees and a sufficiently reliable supply of input materials. Ordinary laborers in the city are beginning to have somewhat more abundant lives than a mere six years ago. There has been steady output of new rail engines, railcars, and barges to haul the bounty of Oosten to where it can be properly used.

Furniture production is still 'off and on'- it just happens to be 'on' at this particular moment.



Steady exports of clothing and hardwares have begun to bring increased profits that should make future investment easier. Although investors have somewhat less ready cash than three years ago, it has begun to grow in leaps and bounds, and should be able to support greater expenditures in the future.

We're now reliably exporting two units of goods a season, which means we can be expecting to make over $1000 every season. This is going to help with those labor shortages I mentioned...




Continued trade and peace has led to notably warmer relations with Tizimo, Dukatole, and Sangju, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects that the situation shall only improve in the future.

Proposals for the Reichsrat

Appropriations for Consulates- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that, with a last push of increased funding, it could establish consulates in the last remaining primitive nations it has yet to maintain relations with. The Ministry of the Interior advises that such a project at this time would have to be accompanied with a dangerous new tax burden which may well impact domestic investment, but believes that one or two new consulates may not be such an expense as to be unsupportable. Regardless of any such recommendations, the Reichsrat retains the authority to authorise as many or as few new consulates as it wishes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stands ready to report on the products of remaining minor nations, should the Reichsrat demand such a report in the course of its deliberations. Please debate how many consulates to establish, and where.

Appointment of a New Minister of War- Thedor von Benharg, the former Minister of War, has begged to resign his post due to his declining health. Three candidates have been advanced for his replacement. Willibald von Benharg, Theodor's son, is a military traditionalist likely to focus on prioritising a strong army balanced with a modest naval presence. Karl Ritter is a member of a very minor aristocratic family traditionally in military service; he advocates a powerful force of ships of the line to serve as a deterrent against invasion, supported by a few frigate scouting elements and modest expansion of the army given opportunity. Otto Jurgens is a former commercial merchant captain with experience against pirates; he has been a strong advocate of a frigate-heavy navy spread to allow advance scouting and potential commerce raiding in the event of war, with eventual establishment of a line of battle to protect the capital and some army forces for added security. Please debate who to appoint as the new Minister of War.

Armaments Appropriations- With continued growth in the steel industry and an expected future steel industry in Pfenborg, domestic costs for the manufacture of armaments have begun to drop, making it economical to begin to set aside appropriations for an expanded military. Three mutually-exclusive bills for appropriations to support the Ministry of War have been passed. One anticipates only a very minor increase in expenditures on armaments, and a minimal disruption to civilian industry. One is a moderate establishment of expenditures on armaments, unlikely to require any real tax increases but sufficient to start an expansion of the army or navy. Finally, there is a bill pushing for a major new increase in armaments expenditures, likely to take all of the steel production of Oosten City itself once it is fully in place and likely to be a notable burden on industry. Please vote for a military appropriations bill.

Members of the Reichsrat may advance other proposals.

Proposals for Investors

Labor Issues- The dire need for new or more productive labor is almost certain to spur a major series of training and education programs backed by some recruitment of labor from the countryside over the next years, unless tax burden renders this impractical.

Expansions of Industry- Solid foreign supplies of timber and modest foreign supplies of iron and coal backed with Oosten's own rich reserves of iron and coal could support expansion of Oosten City's lumber or steel industries, even beyond what could be accomplished at the moment with improved availability of labor. Investment in the provinces could result in doubled output of Kendeburg's steel industry, and a steel industry in Pfenborg to match, or could result in a textiles industry in Friercherlen twice as large as that in Mierlau. Please propose industries for first and second priorities for expansion. Any notable increase in armaments appropriations will automatically prioritise the steel industries in Kendeburg and Pfenborg first, to match demand from the armaments industry.

Expanding any of our industries save for textiles in the capital will cost 4 steel and 4 lumber at this point in time. Textiles expansion in the capital will cost only 2 steel and 2 lumber, but supplies of fiber to feed the industry are still unreliable.

Transport Investment- The new port under construction in Pfenborg should pave the way for a local steel industry there. Following the completion of that port, several alternatives present themselves. Establishment of a rail spur north to Isslarg should allow for improved supplies of cotton to the capital, as well as access to more fruit, meat, and grain. Isslarg is expected to develop a local textiles industry if it has proper access to the rail network. Establishment of a port near Benharg should improve local supplies of timber and encourage a lumber industry in Benharg, as well as paving the way for an eastern rail line which could stretch near Wambusben. Building a rail line south from a port near Benharg to Wambusben could provide access to fruit, meat, and gold. Please propose the first one or two priorities for new transport hubs.

Financiers and industrialists may advance other proposals.

Although strides have been made over the past three years, it has proven that the challenges of an industrial age require enormous amounts of skilled labor beyond what have been available up until now. Perhaps as a result of my concerns, I must advocate for the appointment of Karl Ritter as our new Minister of War. A strong navy to protect our shores will be key to securing Oosten's future as an independent and world leading power, which Herr Ritter understands. The foundation he will lay can hopefully be built into a navy envied the world over. We are in agreement, however, that the moderate military appropriations proposal before the Reichsrat should be adopted. I am aware that I have already thoroughly covered the effects of Oosten City's labor shortage on our profits above, but I feel the need to reiterate that we must invest as much as possible in increasing the available labor pool and more thoroughly educating the existing laborers in Oosten City. As such, I would like to inquire as to your opinion of investing a substantial amount of our liquid capital in the proposed Benharg > Wambussen rail line, to better exploit the rich agriculture of the region as a food source for an expanded Oosten City in addition to tapping the local gold deposits; and a lesser investment (resources permitting) into the rail spur north to Islarg. It of course goes without saying that our main industrial priority should be the further expansion of our interests in the steel industry, followed by an expansion of the Oostenich lumber industry both to take advantage of large supplies of timber and feed the nascent Queen's Navy.

We already have a consulate in Kathifas. The only remaining minors without consulates are Nugileki, Aturnipak, Pognasta, Al Dada, and Al Shabanoyd. And going for a major player in the steel industry is totally fine.

Appointment of a New Minister of War- The minister of war is tricky: on the one hand, frigates will become incredibly outdated very quickly; on the other had, more powerful ships need more cannons, and I don't know how many we have, or can acquire. If acquiring ships of the line is at all feasible though, Karl Ritter is the best choice bar none: land invasion is a minimal concern at this point, but having no ships of the line will put us in a very bad position as soon as our rivals acquire one themselves, and they will exploit that.

Armaments Appropriations- Again, a moderate establishment of expenditures on armaments is the best choice if we can have enough cannon for ships of the line; if we don't, we'll need to increase expenditures until we have enough. In the long term, armaments for ships save on costs by avoiding a war we don't want, and by avoiding the need to retire all our frigates when they become entirely useless in combat.

Labor Issues- Always be expanding labor when possible.

Transport Investment: Benharg for lumber, then a rail to Wambusben.

I'm guessing only the headlines in bold have actual mechanical effects and everything else is flavor? Or can you like infer things about short-term market needs by reading some of the non-bold headlines? Like, Frankenstein is popular so paper is in higher demand.

The non-bold headlines are generated completely randomly and have nothing to do with anything; I've been ignoring them.

I'm sorry I let this LP drop off into nothingness- I was suddenly seized by insecurity over my own basic incompetence at the military aspects of this game. Not that war was directly looming, but I was beginning to lose confidence in my ability to manage the diplomatic side of the game to stave it off. That said, I have certain plans for future LPs, and want to open them to discussion. (I also want to apologise about my continued procrastination in editing and proofing the SMAC LP before submitting it to archives- I'll get around to that sooner or later.)

1) I could potentially start a Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars (hereafter to be referred to as 'nuMoO') LP almost immediately. Positives: nuMoO has many of the good points of Master of Orion 2, and some elements of it have been improved upon. I could start almost immediately. Negatives: despite some improvements, I still prefer some ways in which MoO2 handled things; starting a nuMoO run might keep me tied up slightly past when one of the more interesting games to LP comes out. I'm not quite good enough at the game to ensure that we won't have a sudden and ignominious loss in the relatively early game, which would make for a rather short and dissatisfying game.
2) I could start a second Master of Orion 2 LP, this time showing off my preferred custom race- not one of the traditional 'overpowered' custom races, but nonetheless one which can show off how to leverage certain parts of the MoO2 system to the fullest. Positives: I am completely confident in my ability to do this competently, and there's no way I'm getting discouraged from a MoO2 LP. Negatives: I already did a MoO2 LP, and my preferred playstyle for this race may well stave off any war whatsoever, which is fine by me but may not necessarily be what the readers want.
3) I could wait until Stellaris gets a diplomacy system that isn't completely borked and start on that. Positives: Stellaris is a game of incredibly ambitious scope; I'm confident in my ability to create interesting narrative out of whatever happens in the game. Negatives: Who knows how long Paradox will take to get things in a state that are acceptable to me? I'm confident they'll do it, just less confident as to when.
4) In a few months, Stars in Shadow will be feature-complete and come out of Early Access, at which point I can LP it. Positives: I absolutely intend to LP Stars in Shadow and am extremely excited to do so. Negatives: I can't do this yet.
5) Other games might be suggested to me. Positives: I just might decide one is a good idea and go with it, which could give me something to do right away. Negatives: whether I'll accept a suggestion is an open question- I can be fairly picky about what I want to play through.

Frankly, I think your best option is Master of Orion (2016). When your LP is finished, it's likely that both Stellaris and Stars in Shadow will be better options.

I also would like you to play a different starting species - the Psilon and Alkari strike me as your style.

Sure, Master of Orion (2016) sounds like a good choice. And really, whatever you pick, your LPs are always a blast to read.

Based on the feedback I've received, I have decided to LP nuMoO. Our options? The Human Republic or my custom implementation of the Gnolam Union- the Gnolams don't exist as a default race in nuMoO, but would fit right in.
