also there's a Homeworld remaster out, it has cool trippy space aesthetics and actually had a Yes song in the game. it also actually has good gameplay.

Sadly the Remaster doesn't have the Yes song due to rights issues (but there is a mod to add it back in)

why would developers work on an ARG? thats usually done by marketing agencies , isn't it some youtube videos and some kind of phoneline?

Waking Titan is apparently being run by "professional ARG puppetmasters", so yes, they contracted out. It's your typical ARG nonsense, "run this image through a spectograph to find the GPS coordinates of a dead drop which has the coordinates for a planet in NMS which has a message saying "PATIENCE" which is an anagram for ECAT PINE, ecat.pi.ne being a domain that was registered on 6/9/1996" etc

The most interesting thing about the ARG is that they're buying ad time on obscure third world radio stations for it.

I'm also sure that Hello Games is working round the clock on the ARG and didn't just hand off a concept to a marketing agency like pretty much every other company does with ARGs

I'm sure you're taking the piss but I would hope that Hello Games have learned their lesson about over-hype. The next update will likely be really, really big or they will lost the last few fans they have (ie me)

Well I'm too poor for vr and elite sounds loving baller (it honestly is odd they wouldn't make it work well with VR, any game where "you" are sitting in a chair seems obvious).

I didn't know it was coming out next week, oh my poor life

No, I reserved judgement until I played them both. The old-rear end Elite (or maybe Elite 2, I dunno) was super super boring. Can you even land on planets and explore them in Dangerous?

You can, that was added in an expansion after launch and should be in the port. You can drive a rover around and I'm not sure what else, the game is primarily about flying between space stations.

I don't actually think hello games devs are sitting down and working on this crap. I was mostly just commenting on the dumb situation they put themselves in again. Suppose Sony are ok with throwing more marketing money at this thing even after the release it had...

If the update is garbage, it will be amusing to watch the poo poo storm within what is left of this games community. If it is decent, I get more content in a video game I really like. So sort of win, win, I guess.

Sony is probably not throwing any more money at Hello Games, considering that they made around 100 million dollars off No Man's Sky. That's a lot of money for a 12 person studio.

its not really the same situation. their main problem was that they tried to sell the overhyped vanilla game for full AAA game prices, which pissed off most people who bought it. the update is most likey going to be free, so either it'll have some decent stuff or it'll just be a blip that no one cares about. if consumers aren't spending money to get it there's unlikely to be much of a poo poo storm if it sucks, just some disappointment from the 5 people who actually follow the ARG

It's boring. At least No Man's Sky is interesting visually and has a photo mode.

I was really into Elite Dangerous for like a week but it got really boring warping to a start, skimming fuel, and warping to the next star.

Elite is a very different kind of game, it's massively multiplayer and takes place in a (fairly loose) model of the actual Milky Way, IMO it's a pretty decent game, sure it's got flaws but lol this is the NMS thread

I go through phases where I'm like obsessed with Elite for 1-2 months, and then it fades back behind more interesting games. The goon community there is loving amazing, though. There's like 2 goon internet radio stations, one for synthwave, one for dad rock, the latter of which has fake in-universe commercials and everything, and Felix Dyson makes these crazy well-produced mission briefing videos whenever we have an actual op.

If PS4 Elite has ingame custom radio stations it would rule but I think that's probably about as likely as streaming Spotify during your gameplay and not getting banned from Twitch

and also you can just listen to spotify while you play games on every platform that matters now

They're not in-game, they're like, a website you open in the background. But yeah, I turn off Elite's default ambient music and listen to either spotify or the aforementioned goon radio.

it's weird to me that Elite and NMS even come up in the same breath. Old Elite (and apparently New Elite too) are games about trading poo poo between systems to make money and also grief other players like EVE. NMS is about getting blazed as gently caress and wandering around planetside or building elaborate and beautiful bases (seriously google "no man's sky bases")

They come up because gamers have been craving good space games since the 90s and three big name games (elite, nms, Star citizen) all turned out to be turds for different reasons.

You can get your $ worth out of elite (don't spend hundreds on VR and joysticks...) but it's a seriously disappointing and shallow game after the initial luster wears off.

there's one called Everspace that came out pretty recently, much more of arcade-ish space shooter but apparently has a fair amount of depth and seems to be getting good reviews, I haven't tried it yet but it looks pretty decent imo (and it's only $30)

Everspace looks great, sounds great and the combat is slick and fast, but it's just not that good. It's a roguelike where you expect to get through a few levels, die, unlock upgrades and restart. New story and features are revealed at a rate which is too slow to keep most people interested. I wanted to like it a lot more than I actually did.

I kinda wish they'd randomly generate alien races like they do creatures on the planets. Oh hello, these are the Jocasnil, and they're a blue horned furry race. Jump a system, we find the Adraganthians, tall skinny yellow people.

Just mix and match from a few dozen components.

I've played about 20 hours of Everspace and there really isn't a lot of depth.

Like most rogue-likes you have to be prepared to get hosed.

It is really exciting when you find some op gear and just start tearing through enemies.

As it turns out flying around in space, while novel, only appeals to the spergiest of sperges unless there is also a story or campaign with some depth. Everyone wants to be Han Solo but Star Wars didn't feature Han Solo trading Space Commodities for 2 hours
