I’m not and was never and independence voter? And I don’t believe in superior nativism or localism? One country two systems was supposed to be a test bed to implement gradual democratic reform.

It’s been over 20 years and there have been barely any changes besides minor improvements on voting changes. Now it’s colonialism all over again with the PRC, and the real estate companies are at it again.

One country two systems is breaking down and that’s why you have record number of people on the streets.

People in Hong Kong or even Taiwan would be happy with one country one system - not the one coming from Beijing.

Just because you are not satisfied with policy doesn’t mean you have to be a separatist. Freedom to assembly, and freedom of expression is a precious right.

to be honest american style democracy kinda blows, the biggest things that are annoying about Beijing is media/internet censorship, sudden changes in policy or direction without first building popular support, and obv the alienation from politics. (also lol if you're uighur, tibetan, taiwanese et al)

Korea is supposedly democratic but their society is hosed up but I guess you can protest in public when samsung installs the next leadership if you want, honestly that's the kind of dicatorship Americans dream their democracy devolve into

If someone wanted to be dictator in America and promised highspeed rail, no more global warfare and 8% economic growth I'd be down

the looting will deffo come from inside china, which is why it's kinda already happening. I don't think there will be the good kind of progressive thinkers and revolutionaries in whatever political event next takes place in China. Opportunists of all strips tho

There’s actually a bit of a backlash against new Hong Kong immigrants from the mainland. Yes, the new changes are not popular, but I don’t believe nativism is the answer.

Some HK national party members have gone off the deep end and have gone all fascist. Replace white people with mainlanders and they all sound like Pevan Stan
HK labor aristocrats attacking chinese proletariat, which liberal and western "socialist" views that protest is inherently good cannot understand

The last governor Patten is against separatism and tried to talk down on the separatists multiple times.

The oligarchs aren't the most vocal ones, they don't need to be because they already have strong business ties in real estate in the mainland. Some of the smaller business groups might be more vocal but even then they show support in public but try to negotiate a backdoor deal and add exceptions

The protest is over the extradition bill being written mainly, but there are a lot of other things that they're mad about which was all kinda kicked off by this. China exerting more influence over Hong Kong, which HKers aren't fans of is one. There are also worries that China will start cracking down on anti-party / anti-china talk in HK if the extradition thing goes through (it will go through because China wants it to). There's also them being unhappy with China slowly chipping away at the two systems one country thing they set up. Then there's the stuff with the language differences causing strife and historical mistrust and etc etc. It's a lot of different reasons and it all kinda boiled over when this bill hit.

Or, you know. The CIA.
