I think some people have tried but the issue is that the "hiring" process takes a days, there is a day of training, you have to meet with a mentor etc and that just isn't worth the work.

I'm open to suggestions~
If the money is kept in a place accessed only through the scammers app, I can easily imagine it functions like so many of the crypto platforms scams where you can deposit money but withdrawing suddenly ends up with problems you need to call customer support to resolve and weirdly you can never get someone on the phone huh that's strange

That's why they do it though - even if you are being mindful for scams, as soon as you get real money out, even a small amount, that's gonna go a long way to turn off that part of the brain that is being careful and let the greed take over. And just like other scams, if you have 10 people cash out their $20 and bail, the 11th guy who commits $500+ makes it more than worth it.

It's basically the same as a pool shark letting some guy win a couple of $20 games. They take the risk of someone refusing to play more and walking away, but it's worth it for the true suckers that are taken for a ride.

I see, thanks thread. Scams are fascinating, because people and their motivations are fascinating.

Wrong lads.
This happens a lot with cryptocurrency, where people get tricked into giving someone full access to a specific currency in their wallet. The website will call it something like "liquidity pool mining" and in some cases actually pay out for a while, tempting the user to deposit more funds in that currency. Once the funds in the wallet reach a certain point, they'll just take them all.

If you try to scam the scammers by starting with a large amount of funds, they'll just take those right away instead.

Worst case they're out a small amount of money they stole from someone else anyway.

Sometimes they'll claim they didn't steal the funds, they actually got auto-transferred to an even better and more rewarding secret pool and if you want them back you have to deposit an even larger amount of money to trigger the release. They'll keep claiming this until you stop giving them more money.

As long as you didn't stick it in some exchange that went belly up or turned out to be a scam, the price has kept rising, so you might actually make money just by hodling. It doesn't actually make sense, and crypto is just a frustrating farce of destroying the planet Even Faster to pretend that it's important. You're missing nothing, it is genuinely stupid, and people who have bought it have helped legitimize something that at this point is only useful for speculation and ransomware.

It's gambling, so people tend to be loud about wins and quiet about losses.

At this point it making no sense outside of that context is a feature and not a bug, because it makes scamming easier in many ways. Make new shitcoins, tell people to keep holding onto that bag because it'll definitely start going up again any day now, anyone who tries to discourage you just doesn't understand crypto, etc.

The $20 or so that you might get is probably from a comprised account, so it’ll eventually be clawed back by the bank and you might find yourself with some very unpleasant investigations while you prove you didn’t steal it / weren’t complicit in the scheme. Unless it’s the crypto scheme where you are putting money into and withdrawing from their scheme.

It’s really, really not worth scam baiting. Just check r/scams on Reddit for people this has happened to.

Yup, it's gambling mixed with techbro arrogance.

See, it's not gambling1 because it's this new2 big shiny thing that's the future3! Totally different than granny gambling her last coin away on a slot machine4! And far smarter than finance5!

1Actually, it is
2Actually a few decades old
3Actually has no real-world applications that aren't done better by something else
4Actually it's the same
5Actually also gambling, only with the advantages of using inherited money and a legal/financial system tilted so that the rich keep winning.

Forgot about this one:

I've posted before about how modern job hunting is a scam ridden nightmare and the other day I saw a listing for well paying job at the USPS. Except the link doesn't take you to the USPS site but instead a third party one that's made to very much LOOK like the post office website. They charge an "application fee" that's supposedly refunded after you get the job and, yes, it's a scam.

I worked in domain registration around the time when .biz and .info opened in 2001 and the sunrise period marketing for them was just disgusting. So much aggressive fear mongering aimed at small business owners who barely had any internet presence to begin with.

It's absolutely an arms race. Someone invents a new scheme, and it takes spam filters and such a while to notice.

For months I'd get a notification every couple weeks about someone wanting to share a PDF with me on google docs. I have no idea if Google plugged that hole or the guy running that scam got hit by a train. Maybe both. Hopefully both.

IIRC this was a big fuckup when they introduced .biz and .info. They priced them lower than .com to encourage use. Since they were a bit cheaper scammers, spammers and other cruft used them for their throwaway domains. Users began to associate the domains with scammers and spammers so no legitimate businesses would touch them.

I tried a free trial with NFL Network and had what I'd describe as a "benign-boomer" experience. I couldn't get the streams to play. I tried the tech support chat: "did you try the troubleshooting steps?" (the page with things like: reboot your computer, disable your antivirus) "yup, nothing worked though" "I'm very sorry, it just doesn't work for some people. We'll cancel your account and you won't be billed." Multi-billion enterprise lol.
