If the money is kept in a place accessed only through the scammers app, I can easily imagine it functions like so many of the crypto platforms scams where you can deposit money but withdrawing suddenly ends up with problems you need to call customer support to resolve and weirdly you can never get someone on the phone huh that's strange

That's why they do it though - even if you are being mindful for scams, as soon as you get real money out, even a small amount, that's gonna go a long way to turn off that part of the brain that is being careful and let the greed take over. And just like other scams, if you have 10 people cash out their $20 and bail, the 11th guy who commits $500+ makes it more than worth it. It's basically the same as a pool shark letting some guy win a couple of $20 games. They take the risk of someone refusing to play more and walking away, but it's worth it for the true suckers that are taken for a ride.

This happens a lot with cryptocurrency, where people get tricked into giving someone full access to a specific currency in their wallet. The website will call it something like "liquidity pool mining" and in some cases actually pay out for a while, tempting the user to deposit more funds in that currency. Once the funds in the wallet reach a certain point, they'll just take them all. If you try to scam the scammers by starting with a large amount of funds, they'll just take those right away instead. Worst case they're out a small amount of money they stole from someone else anyway. Sometimes they'll claim they didn't steal the funds, they actually got auto-transferred to an even better and more rewarding secret pool and if you want them back you have to deposit an even larger amount of money to trigger the release. They'll keep claiming this until you stop giving them more money.

As long as you didn't stick it in some exchange that went belly up or turned out to be a scam, the price has kept rising, so you might actually make money just by hodling. The $20 or so that you might get is probably from a comprised account, so it’ll eventually be clawed back by the bank and you might find yourself with some very unpleasant investigations while you prove you didn’t steal it / weren’t complicit in the scheme. Unless it’s the crypto scheme where you are putting money into and withdrawing from their scheme. It’s really, really not worth scam baiting. Just check r/scams on Reddit for people this has happened to.

Forgot about this one: I've posted before about how modern job hunting is a scam ridden nightmare and the other day I saw a listing for well paying job at the USPS. Except the link doesn't take you to the USPS site but instead a third party one that's made to very much LOOK like the post office website. They charge an "application fee" that's supposedly refunded after you get the job and, yes, it's a scam.

Someone somehow managed to get far enough into trying to steal my FB account that I got a text message with an auth code. Unfortunately for them I am very very banned from FB and Insta etc. and any and all attempts to re-activate my account just signals to FB to deny and block everything from that IP address. Picked the wrong person to try and scam whoops.

(the page with things like: reboot your computer, disable your antivirus) "yup, nothing worked though" "I'm very sorry, it just doesn't work for some people. We'll cancel your account and you won't be billed." Multi-billion enterprise lol.
