The reasoning back in 2012 (of the pro-Harden faction) was that Harden was already a demonstrably better scorer. Almost the best in the league even though he was young enough to be in the NCAA.

The basic response to Harden's very efficient and very elite scoring was that he was just dominating garbage time. And if he started games without RW and/or KD he'd be exposed and look bad. I was here...I remember it.

code:
Player 2012 NP
Kevin Durant	332.56
LeBron James	293.12
James Harden	252.64

(469 other players)

Tayshaun Prince	-50.6
Austin Daye	-51.92
Tyrus Thomas	-59.52
Lamar Odom	-60.12
Kemba Walker	-61.72
Toney Douglas	-64.44
He had the third best scoring numbers in the whole league.

No problem.

I mean you don't have to use a lot of advanced stats to see Harden was really efficient

His splits were 49/39/85

The question was "can he do this on high usage?"

Despite Tae, that wouldn't have bought them much time given the cap projections at that time and they would have headed for a nasty run of tax. Definitely a thing that they should have done, but it would have been expensive.

I thought Harden was a good player who wouldn't look great without Russ and Durant. I was completely wrong but I don't think it was completely indefensible. They did offer Harden a contact a bit under Max that would have bought them an extra year too (which would have done the same thing as stretching Perkins). The dumb thing they did was pulling the trigger on trading Harden when he had one more year on his rookie contract.

I absolutely hated Harden when he was at okc but he was a killer.

He was basically Manu reborn, and as a Mavs fan, I dealt with way too much Manu for my liking.

It doesn't really matter if he was their leader, Harden was being traded because he wanted out and that's really all there is to it. People can litigate how good the trade was, or the coaching of the team, or anything really, but not Harden leaving, that was ordained.

He was an RFA, and I think he even said he was happy to keep coming off the bench as long as he got a Max contract.

That's what he said at the time, but new facts have come out, he did not want to be on the bench or split possessions with Russ and KD. It's one of those sports things where the truth only comes out after everyone has stopped caring about something.
