I did some POTD recently to level up a Paladin alt so I could do the other ShB role quests and have a class to absorb extra MSQ experience. Most of my runs have had two tanks so one of us has ended up as a relatively poor DPS. On the last 3 runs we wiped and it was a waste of time because people kept looking at the floor 50 boss's gaze attack. My first instance tanking attempt also went pretty badly. I might have been pulling too slowly or it might have been bad luck, but after the healer randomly d/c'd for 5 minutes and we couldn't get a replacement we vote-abandoned it. Grinding FATEs has been... steady... but I think I'll probably need to give roulettes another try. Or maybe start doing the beast tribe dailies now that I've hit level 42.

Command missions are a great way to level alt-DPS classes. You bring in your own NPC crew to one of several dungeons. They take a bit to unlock through ranking up your grand company, then you have to rank your squadron up a bit by sending them on missions. But before long you can hop into level 20-60 dungeons with no queue time whatsoever. You also get to keep all of the loot for yourself, so it's an easy way to gear up pre-poetics at level 50.

If you feel like you want to level many of the DPS classes, they're even better. After working on your squadron for a time, they'll get upgrades so they can do twice as much damage as you can on a DPS class. This plus no queue time makes for pretty quick leveling if you don't mind dungeon spamming.

Appreciate the helpful replies from.the veterans on this board!

I have a few more questions of my own:

1) I have just reached level 30 and completed the thamurtage chain of class quests. However, there doesn't seem to be any way for me to train as a black mage, not sure what I'm missing here?

2) As for MSQ, I've just reached the part where I need to select a grand company. Is there any guide on what are the differences for each grame company? I'm kinda inclined to stock with the one in Uldah since it's my home city as a Thamurtage.

3) I've also just entered Gold Saucer. Oh my lord, there's so much stuff that I'm overwhelmed. Are there any things on GS where I should get started on asap or are they all optional and I can just take my time whenever?

Thanks!

No. 1. You'll need to advance in the MSQ for the job quests to appear. sylph management.

The blasphemer, uncontrite, must be punished mightily.
You’ll need to get a bit further in the MSQ before you can start on BLM (complete the quest Sylph Management).

The only differences between the GCs are cosmetic (glamour and a few titles) so feel free to choose whatever.

Gold Saucer is entirely optional.

For GCs, pick the one with your favorite uniforms and the city you like the best. There only practical difference is that the Immortal Flames have a HQ very close to the Ul'dah aetheryte while the Maelstrom are an extra loading screen away from the Limsa one. This is much less important to me than having naval hats for glamming so I am Maelstrom anyhow, but it's a difference.

For the Gold Saucer, I'd recommend spending a little time in there right now. There's an event going that gives you extra currency, and another event in September (the FFXV crossover event) that will likely have a timed reward for 200,000 of that currency.

It won't take much to get that if you've unlocked the Challenge Log. Two weeks of doing the Fashion Report in there and a handful of the Challenge Log weeklies and you'll be set. It'll take maybe 30-45 minutes a week.

The Golden Saucer is a casino run by someone who's apparently never heard of the term "house edge". mini/jumbo cactpot pay out more than they cost not only on average but literally every time. Fashion Show is also free points, you get 10000 once a week without trying, 60000 if you do try.

Everything you can buy with points is cosmetic though, but dressup is the real endgame so it's important.

Squadrons are still a thing in HW. They're not a bad way to level dps jobs to 60 for some stretches, even if they are jankier than the Trust npcs in ShB.

It's odd that we haven't got AI dungeon parties for Stormblood content yet, now that everything else is at least somewhat covered. Squadrons in dungeons was even a StB feature and all.

It's literally impossible to lose MGP on anything in the Gold Saucer, likely so they don't run afoul of any laws restricting simulated gambling.

If you're like me you should go into the card square by the entrance hall and do the Triple Triad tutorial so you can give up on saving the world and become a professional Triple Triad collector who begrudgingly slays monsters so people will play cards with you. Also I'm not sure if you can get random card drops from bosses if you haven't done it yet so sooner might be better.

You can't, the steam and non-steam versions are separate accounts as far S-E is concerned. You can see both from one log-in, but the characters and billing and whatnot are treated as separate entities. It's really anoying!

If you want to get off to a good start in the GS, my suggestions would be to do the following:

- Do the Mini Cactpot every day (we can give you tips on how to nearly maximize your wins if you want, or you can just play around to have fun).
- Do the Weekly Cactpot every week (you will likely never win, but you will always win more MGP than you invested).
- Do the Fashion Report every week, if you can get access to the gear. There are a number of places that post the "winning" outfits, so it is usually pretty easy to get the maximum rewards for a small amount of money (60k MGP, I think?).
- Look at the Challenge Log for the GS and do whatever catches your fancy (the Challenge Log rewards are pretty small - maybe a few thousand MGP, but it can be a lot if you are just starting out).

Other than that, I would do whatever you think is fun!

Even if you don't go for the 80 point fashion report threshold on a given week, enter anyway; you get 10k MGP just for showing up.

Reddit usually puts together fashion report infographics to help you get 80 points (the threshold for an extra 50k MGP) or 100 points (where you get a few achiements and a title; you only ever need to do this once since the MGP reward is the same as 80 points). Some weeks the 80 point items are literally less than 500 gil of vendor gear and dyes. If you're in Discord then Kupobot has a command to post that week's infographic for convenience.

giving this a go again, powering through SB after grinding through all the post-HW quests that must have burnt me out last time round.

i find it strange that they still havent really changed anything to do with this since I last played in HW. i would expect a dev to change that kinda thing where its basically multiple days of running around doing not-even-fetch-quests until you can get to the next expac.
i understand at the time they were parcelled out as patches but yknow, its not that time anymore. this was the main problem with the game when i was playing HW so its weird to see it still in the game except worse cause you gotta do it for post HW and post SB presumably too.

at least there were some good cutscenes and BOY am i enjoying GNB a lot more than summoner, i think being summoner was my main problem last time round, i wanted to be summoning big stuff but its more like an affliction lock but a lot slower.
even in SB the dungeons are all still super mindless so its easy to tank and you get loads of exp. (not that i need exp, its MSQ grinding i need)

the SB story is a bit weird though, we're definitly the baddies here and im not sure why my hero of light is so happy to travel the world helping incite foreigners into getting killed. my impression was the scions or braves or whoever were anti-war but i suppose not cause the empire is too evil now? i'll be honest i lost track of the story after nidhogg.

Got my BRD to level 42. Really might just level via the roulettes for the next few days and work on other classes.

Did they really enhance the speed of the Disciples of Land leveling? Up until level 19 I had kept at or ahead of pace just by doing the class quests. Even still, after the level 15 quests I am only a half a level away from 20. I feel like it used to take a lot more.

Also, does the bonus for having a higher level class transfer to the DoL/DoH? Is it still the case that your DoL/DoH classes can't exceed your highest DoW/DoM classes?

Yeah I get that, but the alliance or whoever the hell the player faction is seem really incompetent so we're just kinda running around getting people killed running from disaster to disaster.

I like the opening where you spend ages convincing some poor guys, who all tell you they'll all be killed if they do it, to launch an ambush attack on the empire that goes OK then they immediately retaliate and kill all the guerrillas and we're like "but... These people surrendered! These evil imperials!" and have to flee the country to go get some Japanese people killed instead.

Its actually a pretty good incompetent fantasy CIA plotline but that seems like a swerve from HW which was all about making peace

E I like the general setting and sea stuff though, I feel like FF14 is kinda let down by its zones though. There's a lot of zones that are primarily ugly low poly rock textures, whereas Kugane and Foundation look great.

Yeah, DoH/DoL got a big exp buff and mining/botany got a bit of an overhaul in 5.1 or 5.2 to go along with the Ishgard restoration content. They're both much faster to level outright, plus the Ishgard restoration content is extremely rapid leveling (and fishing also gets ocean fishing, which is the second fastest way to level a job in the entire game outside of a Blue Mage getting powerlevelled).

No, the armory bonus does not apply to non-combat jobs. And I don't think your DoH/DoL levels are restricted to your combat cap unless I've missed something but I could be wrong there; the big impediment in the past was "I'm not high enough level to get to the areas that have the materials I need to keep making new things", but you can just go do Ishgard stuff instead if you really want.

Communist Thoughts posted:

Plot allusions and details snipped

Spoilers and details aside, they're not going to go back and change the pacing of patch MSQ content because outside of what they trimmed out of ARR it's all still pretty pertinent. They've gotten better about streamlining MSQ in general, but the balance of "Go do some possibly simple quests and oh here's a duty or a long cutscene" is how it rolls. Since all the plot stuff builds on top of each other they're not just going to keep ripping and replacing it. Some of the patch MSQs are actually very short because they convey what they need and move on. There's always the cutscene book or NG+ if you need a refresher on what happened with the plot, especially if you took a break.

For new folks, each expansion cycle breaks down as follows (ARR is a bit less rigid this way since they were basically winging it until about 2.4):
X.0 patch - base expansion, tells a story, big fight, credits
X.1-X.3 - followup from the base expansion, resolution of the main expansion theme and plot
X.4-X.5 - setup for next expansion, another credits sequence at the end

So when you hit the X.4 patch it might seem a bit disconnected or out of theme from the expansion itself (or even a letdown - we had this big climax, what the hell is going on now?), but it's groundwork for what's coming next. Endwalker is going to change this up by basically rolling the X.1-X.3 content into the base expansion, so when you finish the launch Endwalker content, that's basically the end of the "main" story they're going for there - 6.1 and beyond will be them doing a major shift into whatever overarching plot is next.

Since the "Endwalker" expansion is supposed to be the 'end' of the current storyline I wonder if they'll consider the possibility of allowing players to simply skip the entire original plot going into future expansions. While they've done what they can do trim the story I feel like convincing people to join the game becomes a bigger and bigger ask, because even if they enjoy story it is quite a feat to do like 300+ hours of game to get 'caught up'.

Though I do recognize this game is has notably less pressure to race to the end than most MMOs. But at the end of the day I think people like the feeling of being max level and having their full abilities.

Maybe they can consider a middle option between the free to play and the full subscription? Like, you can pay $40-60 to unlock everything pre-Endwalker and also get more features and freedom than the free to play offers? IDK. I feel like the free to play takes some of the pressure of feeling the need to rush through the game to get the best 'value' out of your subscription but it is also still pretty stifling by the necessity of it being free and trying to avoid it being a way for bots and spammers to go completely hog wild. Or maybe that's going to create a temptation to have people just hang out in the pre-expansion world and never go full sub. IDK.
