The comic has been so good post-retirement that I'm worried that, once Ippo inevitably starts boxing again, he'll still devolve into being a punching bag again (maybe after 1 comeback match where gets to destroy his opponent). I'll just hope for the best.

As any seasoned Ippo fan, I'm sure everyone already has their own library of Ippo anime episodes on their computer somewhere. But for those that don't, the entire first series got added to netflix. The first 76 episodes. Don't think the movie is included. If anyone wants to rewatch the glory days and still has netflix.

I assume Morikawa and his editors talked it over years ago and decided this is preferable for whatever reason. Maybe a certain number of people buy the magazine mostly for Ippo and they don't want to lose sales. Fun fact: Ippo is the longest-running series in Weekly Shonen Magazine by 14 years. 27 years if not for the second-longest, Ahiru no Sora.
