Exploration is ill-advised.
IIRC all the 'rules' about secure passwords were basically made up by one guy in five minutes when he was put on the spot and he's spent years since telling everyone to stop because they're doing everything wrong and taught everyone to use passwords that are hard for humans to remember and easy for computers to guess.

l337 famous quotes are my go to when I'm not using a password manager. Making password-store give me a long password is way easier than remembering poo poo though so it's not common for me to use a password I need to remember.

A shitton of goons got hacked. Not skillfully, just half of everyone was apparently using passwords like 123456 and abcdefg. Lowtax got frustrated and made the password requirements obnoxious.

Also it wasn't eight years ago, I was still in high school, so it's somewhere in the late 2000s.

Several years ago a significant number of Craigslist accounts had their passwords identical to their username. It was trivial to hijack accounts there for a while.

When I first regged (05/06?) you weren't allowed to use a free email account. I lost my old account because it was linked to my isp address from my old flat and I forgot my password.

I like this person. I had a set of passwords that was created on the like 20th password change at work and apparently I had used all the ones I kept trying (all the different apps we used had password changes at different intervals, so I really had no clue what was what at that point).

It was a very long, expression of my feelings in the moment. With a few alterations of course.

This might not be a “saga,” and it may have already been posted here, but whatever. It’s good content.

I was just re-reading the “Donkey Kong turned my sister communist” thread. It starts out with somebody’s sister having a revelation about scarcity while reminiscing about Donkey Kong, and by the fourth post, Platystemon is in there banansplaining Gros Michel to the crowd. Somebody comes in with “there are only like two dozen types of banana left on the planet” and Platystemon is all BZZT WRONG and starts dropping science.

By page two, it’s the banana thread, with Platystemon explaining everything from why breeding a fungus-resistant banana is a state-level project, to why the banana blossom, despite appearances, would NOT make a good butt plug. People are like, “THIS KNOWLEDGE! WERE YOU SENT BY THE GODS??” and Platystemon is all, “No, I’m just an amateur banana enthusiast,” then he swerves to avocados, and the thread dies.

Man that thread ended too soon, I wanted more banana facts

Tangentially related, my old job had an ordinary card reader at the doors, like the kind where you just hold your wallet near it and it instantly unlocks. Then they decided to "upgrade" to an app that unlocked the door via bluetooth on your phone, but the app was super buggy and a lot of the times my phone would connect and the thing would beep but not open, and I'd be standing there in the rain shaking my phone at the panel cursing for 30 seconds before I could finally get in. And if you ran to your car and left your phone on your desk, you were hosed. HR had a box of old-fashioned cards that still worked, but they weren't allowed to give them out because the bosses loved pretending like we were a trendy tech startup (see also: the slack-powered office-wide music playlist that only played the same 3 hours worth of music on repeat and ignored requests to remove old songs).

Before the 2012 Olympics a goon in the ukmt in d&d was talking about protesting or messing with the torch bearers. I can't remember the exact details. Some one else said he discussed it on facebook as well so it could have been that although I'm sure SA is monitored by multiple agencies.

I have a strange co-dependency with someone I don’t know. When I first glimpsed at Something Awful at 15 in 2002 Lowtax was a 25 year old ‘it boy’ and as far I was concerned the funniest and most daring dude on the internet, and I guess I always felt this whole network would remain constant and appeal to the.sensibilities of who I was back then. I wonder sometimes if it’s the final vestige of my childhood. So yeah I’d like to see a less harrowing ending to all this.

I'm assuming the forums went down to try and clean up the mess of threads that did this.

While Stalin, obviously, is responsible for much more death and suffering than Lowtax, who knows what sort of atrocities the latter would have committed if he hadn't spent 95% of the past fifteen years passed out on his couch
