gamedev tycoon famously had a game-breaking anti-piracy feature.

i heard operation: flashpoint would also degrade bit by bit if it was a warez copy, and it actually made me buy the game, because i couldn't be sure by just playing that it wouldn't go south sometime later if it was pirated.

The People's Tight End.
I remember playing a pirated version of GTA IV when it first came out on the PC and the devs had figured a way to tell if the game was cracked and it would put you in drunk mode all the time. Not too fun, so I went out and bought it a few days later after seeing if there was ever going to be a fix.

I know this is outside of our reminescences, but wasn't GTAIV release on PC plagued by odd conversion issues?

I don't remember much wrong once you got it started, but if you bought it on Steam you had to sequentially log into Steam, GFWL and Rockstar Social Club to get that poo poo to launch

Pretty sure there was a failure state where the Rockstar login box would appear on top of the GFWL one and soft lock the game before it had begun

One of the early scene releases of Deus Ex had a bunch of NPC chatter stripped out for size, but the trigger to end the first level was when the NPC boat captain spoke to you, famously leading to 10,000 "how do I get on the boat?" forum posts.

I think there have also been a number of strategy games that just silently give the CPU a huge advantage in resources and build time and make the game unwinnable

It's just occurred to me that Deus ex was fully voiced which is pretty amazing given it had to fit on one cd.

I still have a boxed copy which is basically worthless but still, I doubt I'll ever throw that away

A very early episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force had a URL you could go to that was just all popups. Hundreds of them all at once. This was before popup blockers were a thing so you were forced to hit the power switch because windows would lock almost immediately. Hilarious

A bunch of PC Capcom games became unplayable when GFWL went down, including RE5, Street Fighter × Tekken, and I think some of the Lost Planet games. Not sure if Capcom ever went back to patch it out.

Jawbone driving themselves bankrupt because their fitness bands had the circuitry running through out the entire band, not just on the top side like most fitness bands and smart watches. So putting it on and taking it off required you to bend the band and thus bend the circuitry past its tolerances. So your $150 band would die after a few months. They did replace it for free when that happened (and even replaced the replacements) but I doubt any of that was good for the bottom line.

at pharmacies i’ve worked at people want desktop links for webpages and i’ve done it this way

I've created a shortcut that way to make it easier to add operations to the command line as the application is launched. Certain games that could only be launched in windowed mode that way for example.

extremely wrong buzzer noise! one of the unregistered win10 things is that you can't go to the control panel and set your wallpaper, but you can right click any image and set as wallpaper and it works. lol
