See, when I played it a year or so back, most of the calls I got were based on memes. Including the five year old calling for help with math homework. I'm sure it's true to reality, but it was stark how many of the calls were line-for-line repeats of famous tumblr posts.

i thought we found out from the apple lawsuit that the developers are paid a lump sum up front, not per copy redeemed

It is a lump sum. Still not worth supporting the devs, attention is as much of a currency as money.

Was it made in Unity? because I could repeatedly install it come Jan 1st to cost them money.

I decided to look at their website to check what I may have misread: https://unity.com/pricing-updates The revenue threshold is on a yearly basis, while the install threshold is lifetime. Nevertheless, the fee is only for new install starting January 1st.

Why can't they just do a portion of revenue since they already need you to report revenue anyways? It's not like they have any variable costs per install to recoup. Unreal charges 5% on revenue past 1 million lifetime. No weird pricing incentives, no donut holes, just "the more money you make, the more money we make." In any case, I doubt this game will hit the $200k/year threshold for 2024, unless epic paid them that much for the deal.

The more that's come out about this and the general state of Unity, the more it sounds like this was a blatant attempt to force everyone onto their personal ad service and the only point of the fees is to be a big, scary cudgel. So yes, the people making decisions didn't think about all the games that would be affected that don't have ad-based hooks for them to slot into, but I doubt that they wanted to make money specifically from revenue fees with this.

After looking at it more, it doesn't seem as bad. It's after the first 200k per year, and non monetized games are not subject to fees. Still dumb.

And if your game has a demo each of those counts as additional install for the base game. And if you have your demo as webgl then every page load counts as one install. And if I install the game on desktop and a laptop that's 2 installs.

If your game costs 20 bucks i.e. is relatively cheap, that's only 10000 sales. This is going to affect a lot of companies.
