If this is where I think it is, the mother has nested there for years. The first time, the ducklings didn't survive the fall. After that, the people in the office building watched her. When it was time to leave the nest, they went out and helped the babies. Believe it or not, some people claimed it was wasting 'valuable time' to help her. The employees said it was better than a bunch of dead ducklings upsetting customers. So now saving the ducklings has become an annual tradition for them.

Soft-shelled turtles can really motor when they want to, at least over short distances - like '20 kilometers per hour' fast when startled out of basking. On land.

On land. As an offhand anecdote, they also tend to be a lot more stubborn about letting you pick them up to get them off of the road than their slower friends like gopher tortoises. At least the florida variety has a pretty long neck and will definitely try to bite you a lot so you have to have your hands toward the back of the shell. You don't belong in the road turtle, go in a pond or something.

My experience (limited; they don't live where I do, but are native to where my grandparents lived when I was a child) is less that they bite and more that they scratch like maniacs. They have strong legs and they're not afraid to use them.

This is like 2% of Bengal ownership. Mostly it's waking up to find your everything that was on your desk has been moved to the floor and seeing your cat sitting proud on your 3D printer, gazing over his works.
